Ad Execs: The New Environmental Power Rangerss

savetheplanethearldtribune.jpg

Maurice Levy, Michael Roth, John Wren, Miles Nadal of MDC Partners; Seth Farbman of Ogilvy and representing WPP; David Jones of Euro RSCG Worldwide and representing Havas; Tom Carroll of TBWA Worldwide; Byron Lewis, UniWorld and Linda Sawyer of Deutsch walk into a bar. Marty says to Linda: “Oi. Is that my hat?” And then, Linda says…

No. That would be too awesome if I had a joke about all these guys. Instead, the Power Rangers of advertising got together to meet with UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. This meeting is to kick start a UN communications initiative to help combat climate change. The industry’s working group, which has yet to be selected, will be made of hand-picked directors from these various industries. Will it be you?
Notice also, there ain’t a digital agency chief on the list. Way to work together guys.

Anyway, Michael Lee, Executive Director of the IAA, said that: “The ultimate selling proposition might just be saving the planet. Nobody, anywhere, can surely defy the gravitational pull of responsibility?”

While this a good thing for advertising agencies to get involved with it, Lee is on crack. The gravitational pull of responsibility? Dude is just out of his mind. I hope that this effort doesn’t kick off with language touting the responsibility of all of us, because you know – that hasn’t worked for, ohhhh…. the last thirty years.

Mindshare Gets A New Look And Sound And Feel And…

mindsharelogo.jpg
MindShare has been busy as of late. Actually, did you now that it’s no longer MindShare, but Mindshare? Mind your capitals, kids. The agency is finishing up its reorganization, which goes all the way down to the letter.

Employees have already received letters informing them of their new titles. What was once a “planner” is now a “senior associate.” Swell, right? The brand will also be receiving a new logo I hope that you weren’t attached to their old one. This latest version features two circles, one purple, one blue like “two Pacmen eating each others faces.” That is not my description, but it’s quite illustrative. Gag.

On Thursday, the shop will announce all this to their clamoring public with a staff party to follow. There’s some other odds and ends, like the focus onto digital, but lets not ruin their surprise, right?

Digging Through The Archives

Starbucks Drops W+K

britney_starbucks.jpg

We hear that Starbucks has dropped W+K and is headed into a review process. WTF? Analysts are expecting weak 4Q reporting from the brand due to price increases and poor overseas sales. Remember those 600 stores in the U.S. they closed, too? However, the ‘Bucks plans on opening its first location in Portugal next week.

UPDATE: Adweek has Dan Wieden saying: “In this case, this seems to be the best decision for both parties.” The publication is also calling it an amicable break-up.

Does It Pay To Play At The Olympics?

medalwinnerdane.jpg
The Beijing 2008 Games had official Global Partners spending a total of $866m for their day in the sun. What were the results? On average each of the twelve official brands increased their brand awareness with Chinese consumers by 7%. Yes, that’s an average. The brand emperors of China turned out to be Coca-Cola and Adidas. These brands took two different approaches to skinning the same cat.

Coca-Cola received a 19% increase in awareness for its efforts. Mediedge:cia is saying that the key factor in the boosted results for Coca-Cola was “its investment in activation of its sponsorship.” Or, it could be that the soft drink maker spent 1.4m on above-the-line advertising, nearly 20% more than any of the other of the Global Partners. Well, that will do it. If you can afford to saturate China in marketing and advertising messages, surely it’s going to pay off.

Meanwhile, Adidas got the same bang for their buck resulting in a 24% increase in consumer awareness. Part of their success came from the Adidas sportswear winners wore on the medal podium. Adidas got the cheaper and better deal if you ask me.

The High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media

(The video above was shot on my brand-spanking-new Flip Mino, which I procured yesterday at B&H. Damn, is that a cool store! Anyway, the shooting is rough, and the subject’s face is really super close. Apologies, I’m new to this. Anyway, expect to see more original content in coming days/weeks/milliseconds.)

After our first round of whiskey-sodas at last night’s opening party for Advertising Week V (at the ever-swanky ice rink bar at 30 Rockefeller Plaza), we bumped into title-less Josh Newman founder of Norwalk, Conn., based MediaTavern.

Josh was with creative director/delightful human Erin Clark. After learning that MT played a large role in getting AW5 off the ground, we jumped to another subject we’d been dying to learn more about &#151 the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media.

Launched this year, a frosh class out at the old (but refurbed) Canarsie high school will be learning all the same stuff other high schoolers do, with the added bonus of all things advertising. We doubt AgencySpy will be part of the curriculum; however, you may know an addy or two that has spoken to the lads and lasses. That’s thanks to a futures program that connects ad-professionals with the classes in a what-do-you-do kind of way.

See, advertising isn’t all evil! Speaking of see-no-whateva, MT’s ‘Click to Begin’ helps get technology in the hands of said students> The non-profit is something every ad-shop (nay, every company) should have going on. Check out the site, here.
