Rosetta CEO Departs Amid More Staffing Changes

Last week, Rosetta (which is now part of the Razorfish Global Network) announced the appointment of a new president.

Another major change that accompanied the promotion of Partner/Rosetta West Lead Tammy Soares was the departure of Rosetta CEO Eric Healy. Multiple sources close to the matter confirm that Healy, who joined Rosetta last February before Publicis folded the agency into the larger Razorfish organization, is no longer its chief executive. (He replaced Tom Adamski, currently CEO of Razorfish, in November.)

Prior to joining the Rosetta organization, Healy served as VP/general manager and head of new business at SapientNitro’s Boston headquarters. Previous agency positions include EVP at Aegis/Isobar, SVP/director of interactive at Mullen, VP of strategy at Digitas, and group director at Arnold Worldwide. He also worked client-side in roles at Reebok and the Rockport shoe company.

Rosetta has gone through several changes since the Publicis move last year. After assuming the CEO role, Healy himself wrote an internal memo tracking moves like the departure of CCO Lars Bastholm (now with Google’s The Zoo) and managing partner Jeff Thaler (now managing director at Huge). A further round of cuts in April allegedly included ECD Frank Iqbal.

North American CCO Alex Mahernia, named by some as Bastholm’s successor, also left the agency in May for a job as SVP of creative at business management software company Mindbody. The agency appears to be without both a chief executive and a chief creative officer at the moment.

Rosetta/Razorfish has no comment on Healy or the status of the Rosetta CEO position, so we cannot speculate on whether the agency will seek a replacement or eliminate the role altogether.

At the time of Soares’ promotion, Rosetta said that it “continues to beef up its executive team,” so we expect more announcements to come.

North American CCO Leaves Rosetta

Alex Mahernia, promoted to the North American chief creative officer role at Rosetta in 2013 before it became one with Razorfish, left the agency earlier this month.

An internal memo from November 2014 which announced Publicis’ plans to fold Rosetta into the Razorfish Global Network also confirmed the departure of then-Global CCO Lars Bastholm (who is now a global CCO at Google’s The Zoo). The implication, according to tipsters, was that Mahernia would replace him.

It was not meant to be. While Mahernia was not mentioned in tips regarding a series staffing changes that affected the Rosetta/Razorfish group in April, other sources claimed that he would not be running the agency’s creative operations–which would instead be organized on a regional basis with Mahernia reporting to CTO Joe Lozito.

In April, a Rosetta spokesperson told us that the shop was hiring to fill dozens of open positions; it does not appear to have a global or North American creative director at the moment.

From the agency:

We can confirm that Alex Mahernia has left the agency to pursue other career opportunities. Alex has played an enormous role in our growth – over the last 16 years, he led and significantly influenced our creative, UX, design and VMG teams and helped develop a number of world–class offerings while cultivating the growth and development of the industry’s brightest creative talent. We are grateful to Alex for all he has given to our business and wish him great luck in his future endeavors. He’s an extraordinary individual, and we’ve been lucky to have him in our family.

From Mahernia himself:

“I am beyond grateful for my career and the opportunity to work with such an amazing and talented group. There is no doubt in my mind that Rosetta will continue to strive and succeed for many years to come, and will always have a very special place in my heart. Most importantly, I have truly enjoyed my personal relationships with every single individual and continue to believe in the talent and the absolute magic and passion each person brings to work every day. I am humbled by Rosetta’s brilliance and look forward to witnessing the agency’s success in the future.”

Prior to joining Rosetta in 2011, Mehernia served as CCO at California’s LEVEL Studios.

While neither statement addresses the now-former CCO’s future plans, he may have revealed his new employer on Twitter: business management software company Mindbody.

We Hear: Cuts at Rosetta

In case you missed it, Publicis Groupe folded Rosetta into the Razorfish Global Network last November in a move that saw quite a few executive changes within the agency: its chief creative officer, managing partner, tech lead, and others departed as Tom Adamski became Razorfish Global CEO and Eric Healy was promoted from managing partner to CEO at Rosetta.

CCO Lars Bastholm was among those who left; he’s now joined several other veterans of the agency world like Scott Lange of Team Detroit and Rudi Anggono of TBWA in accepting a creative role within Google’s “agency for agencies,” The Zoo.

We hear that Rosetta went through another, smaller round of staffing changes this week.

Since Razorfish/Rosetta has no interest in communicating via anything but boilerplate statements, this is the best we can do in terms of an official response:

“A small number of staff adjustments have been made in 2015 consistent with regular business cycles.”

Here’s how we hear it from several sources:

  • The agency let “several” employees go this week after reviewing its Q1 performance in light of the revised goals mentioned in the November memo
  • ECD Frank Iqbal, who joined the agency in 2008 and was promoted to partner in 2011, was among those let go (along with at least one account director)
  • One source claims that the cuts affected approximately two percent of total North American staff within Rosetta (but not the larger Razorfish organization)

One thing is clear: the North American org is hiring for “close to 40? open positions at the moment.

We Hear: Big Changes Coming to Rosetta

rosetta_logoToday Rosetta confirmed that it will announce some big changes in its leadership later this week. The move is not unexpected given the September announcement that now-former CEO Tom Adamski would lead the new Razorfish Global network, a group “comprised of the Razorfish, Rosetta, LEVEL Studios and Denuo brands” as well as “portions of the Groupe’s latest acquisition, Nurun.”

Talk amongst various offices hints at a “big reorg” coming. We were told that we would have to wait for the press release for confirmation on details, but the digital grapevine does claim knowledge of some changes:

  • “Several managing partners” have already left the agency
  • The entire lineup will be “streamlined”

The only individual name we hear among the alleged departures is that of Lars Bastholm, who joined Rosetta as its first-ever global CCO almost exactly one year ago after spending time in top creative roles at Cheil USA and AKQA and serving as digital chief at Ogilvy North America. While we can’t confirm that Bastholm is among those leaving the agency, we expect the news to include both hirings and firings.

You may remember that a string of changes preceded this pending shakeup: over the summer, Rosetta lost a COO and a CFO while gaining an ECD and a managing partner. That move followed an April round of reductions affecting approximately five percent of North American staffers as well as the February departure of ECD McClain.

Updates when we receive them…in the form of a press release.

Big Changes at Publicis: Levy Staying, Razorfish Absorbing Rosetta

Some French dudeIn case you haven’t seen it already this morning, The Publicis Groupe officially rewarded Maurice Levy for his failure today by extending the current chief executive’s role until (approximately) The Avengers 3.

Despite the fact that Levy assured The Guardian that he would “not be seeking a new term” in the halcyon days of 2010 and that other reports had him set to leave next year, it seems that Levy will stick around at least until the approval of all accounts at the end of 2016 — and that he will leave in early 2017.

Obviously, “No clear successor has been appointed to replace Levy.”

Two former candidates will definitely not be replacing him, though.

C-Level Changes at Rosetta

Today we can confirm three C-level departures at Publicis shop Rosetta.

COO Mark Taylor will soon leave his position, while CFO Rich DeMilt and partner Kristy Croft, who ran the POEM (search and media) practice, are no longer with the agency.

Taylor’s last day will come later this month. DeMilt, who joined Rosetta in 2008 after serving as worldwide controller at Ogilvy & Mather, left several weeks ago; the agency appointed Ariel Marciano to replace him as Global Chief Financial Officer in early May.

These moves follow a series of layoffs in April that affected “less than 5%” of the agency’s North American staff; over the past nine months Rosetta has also seen the arrival of new CCO Lars Bastholm and the departure of ECD Dave McClain.

Rosetta Confirms Cuts

rosetta_logo

We’ve seen your tips and confirmed that New York’s Rosetta, or “Publicis Groupe’s customer engagement agency”, did indeed lay off a number of staffers across its North American practice yesterday.

Here’s the agency’s statement:

“As part of the growth and evolution of our business, we are sometimes forced to make adjustments to our staffing structure to align with current market needs. Some recent adjustments were made that impacted less than 5% of our North American staff. In order to meet increased market demand for our services, we are also adding new talent and capabilities to our staff.”

Given that this move follows the November hire of CCO Lars Bastholm and subsequent exit of ECD Dave McClain, we might call it a shakeup.
