Ad Council Announces New President/CEO

Laura ShermanSeveral months after the April announcement that Peggy Conlon would step down after 15 years as president/CEO of The Ad Council, the group has announced her successor: Lisa Sherman will assume the role starting November 3rd.

Sherman spent eight years launching and managing Viacom’s LGBT-themed channel Logo TV, where she currently serves as EVP/general manager. Sherman announced her resignation from that role nearly one year ago, and in the meantime has held advisory roles such as Vice Chair of the Board of the New York City-based God’s Love We Deliver.

Before joining Logo, Sherman spent nearly two decades in various communications/marketing roles with Verizon and founded a marketing services company called Women’s Sports Network. She also brings agency experience to the new role after spending two two years at Hill Holliday New York as EVP/SVP of new business and account management.

Laura Desmond, the global CEO of Starcom MediaVest who became the Council’s new chair in July, had this to say about Sherman:

“Her background spanning media, advertising and corporate brands, as well as the charitable arena, provide her with a unique 360 view that will serve the Ad Council well.”

FCB West Celebrates Smokey Bear’s 70th Anniversary

This August marks the 70th anniversary of Smokey Bear (apparently Smokey the Bear is a misnomer and we’ve all been saying it wrong). First created by FCB West in partnership with U.S. Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council in 1944, the Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest running, and one of the most successful, PSA campaigns in America. 96 percent of the U.S. adult population recognize Smokey Bear, while 70 percent can recall Smokey’s “Only you can prevent forest fires” tagline without prompting.

“Few advertising icons have become as much a part of the American vernacular as Smokey Bear,” said Peggy Conlon, soon-to-be-retired president & CEO of the Ad Council. “Smokey’s persistent popularity from generation to generation is not only a testament to the quality of work done on his behalf pro bono by FCB, but also ensures that his legacy will be one that results in continued impact in the area of wildfire prevention.”

For Smokey’s 70th birthday, FCB West worked with Butcher Editorial to create two new PSAs (running in both 30 and 15 second versions) that celebrate Smokey’s milestone, while still spreading his message of forest fire prevention. In one of the spots (above) a group of children and park rangers bring Smokey Bear a birthday cake. Seeing only the fire hazard of the candles, Smokey reaches for a bucket of water, but thankfully one of the children has the presence of mind to blow them out. In another 30-second PSA, which really ups the creepiness factor, Smokey sneaks up on a man to inform him of a fire hazard. Both spots end with Smokey rewarding fire safety prevention with a bear hug. continued…

Peggy Conlon Retires as President, CEO of Ad Council

Peggy ConlonPeggy Conlon is retiring as president and CEO of The Advertising Council, board chair Debra Lee announced today. Conlon, along with the members of the board, have initiated the process of finding a successor who will transition into the role by early next year.

Conlon joined the Ad Council back in 1999, and during her tenure the organization “addressed significant social issues on behalf of prominent non-profit and federal government organizations such as United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks and the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security.”

“Peggy took over the Ad Council at a critical point in history,” said Debra Lee. “She quickly organized the advertising industry’s response following the September 11th attacks, which changed the way the Ad Council did business and established the organization as the ‘go to’ source for messages on other crises moving forward, including Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean Tsunami and the Haiti earthquake. Peggy’s leadership revolutionized how the Ad Council communicates its messages, leveraging digital and social media and the latest technologies to change social norms on behalf of critically important issues. Her tireless work has been invaluable.” continued…
