Building Brand Affinity: Commercials Still Can Work

I know. I know. The NBA finals are over and Kobe is in bed cuddling his trophy but I had to post this funny Nike Basketball commercial that played throughout the finals. When we talk about building true affinity for brands we must emotionally tap into consumers and truly engage them not just our numbers, research, and spreadsheets. In the onslaught of meaningless buy my product fodder, this spot stands out for all the good reasons.

I have heard sports lovers and not so sports lovers talk about “that funny Nike Basketball commercial”. Ahhhhh cooler talk, marketing heaven–and isn’t that what we all want?

Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player Named

Brandon KnightBeing honored as the best of the best in any sport is a distinction that anyone would surely cherish. And in this case, the Gatorade Company, in partnership with ESPN RISE, today announced junior point guard Brandon Knight of Pine Crest School as its 2008-09 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Knight is the first student-athlete from the state of Florida to win Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Knight as the nation’s best high school boys basketball player. A national advisory board comprised of sportswriters and sport-specific experts from around the country helped select Knight from more than 552,000 high school boys basketball players nationwide.

Knight is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year Award, to be presented at a special afternoon ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July.

Globetrotters to Play for the Last Time at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Spectrum

HGT logo.pdfTo the Harlem Globetrotters, this will mark their first appearance at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia. However, it looks like it may also be their last since the said stadium as the 42-year-old building is scheduled to be razed later this year.

The game will mark the team’s final appearance at the famous Spectrum — either inside it or on top of it — as the 42-year-old building is scheduled to be razed later this year. The team will return to the Philadelphia area later that week for games on Saturday, March 7 (at Temple University’s Liacouras Center at 1:00 p.m. and Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J. at 7:30 p.m.) and Sunday, March 8 at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Center (12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.).

“The Spectrum was a highlight of every tour for the Globetrotters for so many years, and we’re honored to come back and pay it our respects in unique Globetrotter fashion,” said team CEO Kurt Schneider. “We’ve played in so many unique venues over our history, and this game will surely add to that legacy. You might say we are ‘over the top’ excited to play on the roof.”

The Globetrotters first played at the Spectrum on December 2, 1967, shortly after the building first opened. The team continued to play at the Spectrum every year until 1997, when their annual Philadelphia tour stop moved across the parking lot to the Wachovia Center.

W+K – You’ve Done It Again.

With the newest round of Jordan commercials hitting the airwaves in recent days, there is only one thing that comes to mind… “Thank you Wieden + Kennedy, for you have done it again.” Each of the ads pushes the viewer to “become legendary.” And I must say, 60 seconds of Michael Jordan telling me I’ve probably just been making excuses, well, it cuts me to the bone. Each ad is awe-inspiring and each ad serves as a nice reminder that the brilliant advertising, it’s still out there.
