This week's most-viewed video ads chart has a Hollywood touch

This week’s most-viewed video ads have a touch of Hollywood, as several new campaigns that aired during the Oscars are making their debut on the chart. Coming in at the second spot this week is Google’s playful “#HeyGoogle, Let’s Go to the Movies,” which depicts how the use of the Google Assistant could have affected some of Hollywood’s most famous movies.

Meanwhile, the fourth spot on the chart goes to Nike’s “Dream Crazier.” This spot, narrated by tennis superstar Serena Williams, delivers an inspiring message about empowering women in sports to “show them what crazy can do.”

The release of new Samsung devices occupies two chart spots this week. At the top of the chart is an ad highlighting the upcoming release of the company’s new flagship line of Galaxy S10 devices. And in the ninth spot on the chart is the unveiling of Samsung’s new foldable phone-tablet hybrid, the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Apple's ad business borrows a page from Facebook

Apple’s advertising business is growing up, and the company best known for consumer electronics is borrowing a page from Facebook in how it caters to marketers.

On Thursday, Apple Search Ads updated its partner page to include Bidalgo as its second campaign management partner. Apple Search Ads appear at the very top of a user’s app search results; someone who searches for the Uber app, for example, might see an ad for the Lyft app.

Companies such as Bidalgo assist advertisers in managing search ad campaigns through Apple’s app store. Placing Bidalgo on its partner page is similar to receiving a stamp of approval from Apple, essentially saying it’s a qualified and knowledgeable vendor for buying search ads through automation.

Mobile World Congress is the ultimate 5G hype machine

When it comes to the fifth generation of mobile tech, Mobile World Congress is the wireless industry’s biggest, loudest hype machine.

More than 100,000 people are attending this year’s event in Barcelona, which is now underway, and it’s here that mobile technologies such as 3G, 4G and, soon, 5G are born; MWC is the epicenter for how wireless will transform communication, connectivity and even entire industries. And in the case of 5G, there is talk about how it will do everything from make driverless cars a reality to deliver the internet of things revolution in which everythingclothing, kitchens and entire citieswill be connected.

Although there’s legitimacy to such big ideas, marketers, agencies and brands have also caught wind that the tech is far from reaching fruition, with many experts (and telecom executives) predicting that 5G won’t roll out at scale for at least another two or three years in the U.S.

Discovery ad sales growth softens as ratings sink

Ratings challenges across the Discovery portfolio are beginning to have a diminishing effect on the company’s advertising growth, as significant losses at the flagship network and other key brands in the fourth quarter resulted in a sequential decline in sales revenue.

On a pro forma basis, calculated as if the Discovery-Scripps merger had been completed a year ago, fourth quarter ad sales revenue increased 3 percent to $1.04 billion, up from $1.02 billion. The adjusted improvement marks a bit of a downward shift compared to Discovery’s third-quarter results, in which ad sales grew 5 percent year-over-year.

Analysts expected Discovery to post a 5 percent increase in ad sales revenue over the last three months of 2018. On Dec. 3, Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav warned attendees of the annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference that the company’s fourth-quarter sales would come in “a little less” than anticipated, a disclosure that triggered an 8 percent plunge in the company’s stock price that same afternoon.
