McDonald's franchisees to corporate: We're not going to take it

It’s tough being a McDonald’s franchisee these days. More than 1,000 are expected to voice their displeasure at a meeting in Dallas this week, the latest move in what could become a historic showdown between the fast-food juggernaut’s corporate team and its 1,700 U.S. restaurant owners.

The costs of labor, goods and rent are all rising, while diners are showing up less frequently. At the same time, CEO Steve Easterbrook’s three-year-old turnaround plan requires store owners to pony up hundreds of thousands of dollars for high-tech store remodels.

As a result, an October effort to create the franchisee version of a unioncalled an owners associationwas successful, as nearly one-quarter of McDonald’s U.S. franchisees attended a meeting in Tampa, Fla. The group formally incorporated in Illinois shortly after.

Audi's Santa has midlife crisis, sheds pounds to fit in a sports car

Santa Claus’ personal brand, as a modern marketer might say, involves having a round belly and a messy grey beard. It is who he isand has been this way since Coca-Cola helped popularize the modern version of Santa in the early 20th century.

But the Father Christmas takes on a modern look in a new Audi ad that shows him shedding pounds when he endures a bit of a mid-life crisis after realizing that he can’t fit into a sports car at his current weight. The online-only video, by M/H VCCP (formerly Muhtayzik Hoffer) and directed by Craig Gillespie, plugs the new Audi RS 5 Sportback coupe.

Santa catches a glimpse of the car while munching on cookies inside a living room on Christmas Eve. Back at the North Pole after his big day, he begins a workout regime that is painful at first. Pretty soon, he is boxing with elves, jumping rope, doing sit-ups and even passing up cookies in favor of broccoli. He even trims his beard (gasp). His reward, besides lower blood pressure, is a shiny red RS5, hauled in by reindeer, of course, which he takes on a joy ride through the snowy North Pole terrain. Audi’s kicker: “Progress is writing your own story.”

Outdoors brand Fjallraven boosts spending amid parka battle

For three winters in a row, parka-marketer Fjallraven has pushed its product with a Times Square billboard and other out-of-home and print ads. But amid rising competition, including from better-known names like Canada Goose and North Face, the Sweden-based, hard-to-pronounce brand is trying to make a bigger name for itself with its largest-ever U.S. marketing push.

The brand, pronounced fee-yall-raven, is boosting its marketing mix with a digital content series featuring outdoor enthusiasts and influencers. The effort, called “Nature is Waiting for You” debuts this month and includes videos like like one (above) showing an urban-dwelling mom introducing her toddler to nature.

“We haven’t done a great job of developing our own content in-house and being able to connect emotionally with consumers,” says Nancy Blanchard, director of marketing at Fjallraven, noting the brand wants to have “more storytelling that’s a little more engaging than just a giant billboard in Times Square.”

Clorox Co. is getting a new chief marketing officer effective Jan. 7 Stacey Grier, 55, who joined the company just two years ago from DDB, San Francisco.

Current CMO Eric Reynolds, 48, a 20-year Clorox veteran, is getting promoted up a notch from senior to executive vice president, overseeing Clorox’s core cleaning business as well as Burt’s Bees. He’ll continue to report to CEO Benno Dorer in his new role.

The moves come amid a broader shakeup for the Oakland, Calif.-based company, which spent $550 million last year on advertising in the U.S., according to the Ad Age Datacenter. Dawn Willoughby, current chief operating officer, will leave effective Jan. 4, Clorox said. Linda Rendle, 40, currently executive vice president of Cleaning and Strategy, will move up to executive vice president of strategy and operations. She’ll report to Dorer, and Grier will in turn report to her.
