New report ranks brand controversies by the amount of consumer damage

It’s not the crime, it’s the cover up. This old saying, most often associated with political scandals, applies to branding, too, according to a new report.

Consumers are far more likely to punish companies for lying than anything else, according to the report by research company Morning Consult that examines how a range of brand controversies affect consumer opinion. The worst offense is lying to customers in order to increase profits, with 71 percent of respondents saying they would feel much less favorable about a company doing that, according to the report.

But outspoken CEOs can breathe a sigh of relief: The report finds that only 15 percent of consumers would hold it against a company if their CEO “said something rude about people who share your political beliefs.”

Major League Baseball taps MGM as first sports-gambling partner

Major League Baseball named its first official gambling partner, part of a new multiyear marketing agreement with MGM Resorts International.

The deal is similar to ones the Las Vegas-based casino company has already inked with the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League, giving MGM the right to use baseball’s logo and trademarks in states that have legalized sports gambling. That leaves the National Football League — the most popular sport among U.S. bettors — as the only major U.S. league without a sports-gambling partnership.

“There’s been a huge change in public opinion and the legal framework surrounding sports gaming — it has created an opportunity for all sports and baseball in particular,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said at a press conference in New York. “We have to take advantage of every opportunity to drive engagement with our fans.”

PlayStation: Pesetas

PlayStation brings the peseta back 16 years after the euro comes to Spain.

With this idea by TBWAEspaña, PlayStation wants its fans to revive the nostalgia for the original PlayStation, which arrived in Spain in 1995, from the second they purchase it.

But why buy it in pesetas if we no longer use pesetas?

In light of the success of pre-orders of the console, the idea is that, instead of rushing to the store on launch day (3 December) to get one of the few available units, you will have to rush to get pesetas. So, the best way to get a PlayStation Classic is by pre-ordering it in pesetas from 27 November in any GAME store, which has more than 270 outlets in Spain.

The action was published over PlayStation and Game social media and via a graphic point-of-sale campaign.

Facebook has `black people problem,' ex-employee says

As Facebook defends its handling of Russian political interference, an ex-employee published another scathing critique of the company’s culture. Facebook “has a black people problem,” Mark S. Luckie wrote in a lengthy internal memo circulated earlier this month and made public on Facebook Tuesday.

In the post, Luckie, who worked as a partnerships manager for a year, described the ways in which the social network excludes its black users and employees.

“Facebook’s disenfranchisement of black people on the platform mirrors the marginalization of its black employees,” he writes. “Racial discrimination at Facebook is real.”

'Mark Zuckerberg sent his cats' and other zingers from Facebook's global grilling

Ted Kramer, CEO of Six4Three, was in London last week and was compelled by British lawmakers to hand over a cache of emails some of which included responses from Zuckerberg himself that were related to his legal dispute with Facebook. In a statement, Damian Collins, the British politician who executed the order to force Six4Three to hand over the emails, said: “We are in uncharted territory. This is an unprecedented move but it’s an unprecedented situation. We’ve failed to get answers from Facebook and we believe the documents contain information of very high public interest.”

The emails were not publicly released, but Collins previously suggested he had the legal power to make them available.

Still, during Tuesday’s hearing Collins did reveal one detail from the emails, saying that the documents suggested that an engineer at Facebook notified the company in October 2014 that entities with Russian IP addresses were pulling three billion data points a day from Facebook users. Allan declined to answer any questions regarding the cache of emails, only saying, “Any information that you have seen in that cache is at best partial and potentially misleading.”

'Mark Zuckerberg sent his cats' and other zingers from Facebook's global grilling

An app that allowed Facebook users to quickly surface images of their friends wearing bikinis found itself playing a key role at a parliamentary hearing Tuesday in London in which lawmakers from several different countries grilled the social media giant over its business practices.

The hearing, which aimed at getting to the bottom of Facebook’s approach to users’ data privacy, as well as whether it knew about the disinformation its users were spreading during elections, was attended by lawmakers from the U.K., Canada, Ireland, Brazil, Argentina, Singapore, Belgium, France and Latvia. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked to attend the hearing dubbed “The International Committee on Disinformation” but declined the invitation, which lawmakers did not hold back in letting him know they found unacceptable. Richard Allan, Facebook’s VP of public policy, appeared in Zuckerberg’s place.

One of the key lines of inquiry at the hearing was centered on Pikinis, an app that was created by the company Six4Three. It briefly lived on Facebook in 2014 and it allowed users to quickly surface images of their friends wearing bikinis. This meant the company had to have access to friends of the people who used its software. Facebook caught wind of it, took the app down and was later sued by Six4Three for allegedly destroying its business.
