Thrillist writers win $50,000 annual salary in victory for union


Thrillist writers and editors came away from the negotiating table with a raise and more in labor talks that took more than a year and included a work stoppage.

One of the sticking points between management at Thrillist, which is owned by Group Nine Media, and the editorial staff, represented the Writers Guild of America East union, was the demand for a starting salary of $50,000, which the union won in the new deal. In an earlier negotiation, Thrillist had offered a minimum salary of $40,500.

The union also won a guaranteed raise of 8.5 percent after the first year, and other benefits regarding vacation days and parental leave.

Google Home slated to answer questions live during MLB playoffs


Google is taking a swing at rival Amazon with a new campaign with Major League Baseball that will prominently feature its smart speaker.

The deal, announced this week, makes the search giant the “presenting sponsor” for the 2018 American and National League Championships, which begin Friday when the Dodgers face the Brewers on FS1. In terms of coverage, Google seems to have all its bases covered.

Announcers will ask the search giant questions during live game play, some of which will include, “Hey Google, when is the next game?” On social media, the league will create Instagram Stories which are videos that delete after 24 hoursto its 4.6 million followers.

Largest U.S. pot deal expands MedMen's footprint to more states


MedMen Enterprises Inc., one of the most prominent companies in the expanding cannabis industry, agreed to buy medical pot firm PharmaCann for $682 million, boosting its presence across the U.S.

The all-stock purchase, which will give MedMen 10 additional dispensaries and licenses for several more, is one of the biggest in the history of the legal weed industry, which has seen its value explode in recent weeks as Canada prepares to legalize cannabis for adult use next week. With regulations set to loosen in more U.S. states, and around the world, investors are pouring billions of dollars into marijuana companies.

MedMen, which is run from Los Angeles, currently has 16 marijuana dispensaries in the U.S., including in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York. With the acquisition of Illinois-based PharmaCann, MedMen will have 79 licensed cannabis facilities, including grow operations, in 12 states, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
