Toronto Public Health: The Makeover

A lot of people don’t know that the city of Toronto has free condoms for anyone, no questions asked. Toronto Public Health keeps the condoms in giant, self-serve bowls at sexual health clinics, community health centres, and colleges and universities across the city.

“Life in the bowl” is a series of short cartoons that treat the condoms as characters who live in those bowls. The condoms live their lives, waiting for the inevitable moment they’ll be chosen. They know they’ll be taken at some point—just not exactly when.

Weed Treats Social Media Like Palm Oil: You Must Shape Up Eventually

Unilever Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Keith Weed has gotten tougher on big digital platforms but he’s not ready to go cold turkey on the Google-Facebook duopoly just yet.

His threat to stop doing business with media that “breed division in society or fail to protect children” in yesterday’s speech to the IAB leadership meeting isn’t an ultimatum with a firm deadline, he says in an interview with Ad Age. But he isn’t giving social media forever to make things right, either.

Think of it this way: Weed is also in charge of Unilever’s sustainability program. When Greenpeace sent folks in gorilla suits to scale the company’s London headquarters in 2008 over it using palm oil that led to deforestation, Unilever didn’t go cold turkey on producers who clear-cut rainforests overnight. Its goal is to use 100-percent third-party-verified sustainable palm oil by 2019, while steadily weaning itself off questionable ingredients in the meantime.

YouTube TV Adds Turner Broadcasting to Lineup, Hikes the Price of a Subscription

YouTube has struck a deal with Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting to add channels with some of the most popular sports programming to its year-old live TV service, a cheaper alternative to traditional cable and satellite packages.

The Alphabet Inc.-owned video company will raise the price of YouTube TV by $5 to account for the addition of the new channels, which include TNT, TBS and CNN. That brings the overall cost to $40 a month. YouTube TV also added networks run by the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball to the base package.

Turner was the biggest hole in YouTube’s TV service, which has focused on live sports to complement the amateur creators, music videos and late-night clips already available for free. A division of Time Warner Inc., Turner possesses rights to the NBA, MLB and college basketball, as well as a leading news network and general entertainment programming.

San Francisco Giants Names 215 McCann as Agency of Record

As the first pitchers and catchers start to report to spring training the San Francisco Giants have named 215 McCann as the team’s new agency of record, following a review.

“We met with several agencies, and we connected with 215 McCann immediately,” Giants executive vice president of business operations Mario Alioto said in a statement. “We had a strong chemistry from the start and 215 McCann seemed to really understand our brand and our organization goals. The quality of their work — both strategy and creative — was equally impressive. Having worked together for a few months now, we are thrilled with our decision.”

“The Giants are widely regarded as pioneers and leaders in professional sports and throughout the community,” added 215 McCann chief creative officer Scott Duchon. “We look forward to celebrating this team that represents Bay Area values of innovation, diversity and inclusion.”

215 McCann will be tasked with launching a new campaign celebrating the MLB team’s 60th anniversary in San Francisco.

The Giants franchise pre-dates such conventions as the four-ball walk (1889) and the modern distance of the pitching mound to home plate (1893). Founded as the New York Gothams in 1883 and renamed the Giants three years later, the team stayed in New York until the 1958 season when it moved to Seals Stadium, which had been the longtime home of the Pacific Coast League’s San Francisco Seals, before spending nearly four decades in Candlestick Park. The Giants settled in their current home, AT&T Park, in 2000.

It shouldn’t be hard for 215 McCann to find events to celebrate as the Giants have had their share of recent success, winning three World Series titles since 2010, most recently on the strength of a historic World Series pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner in 2014.

Not Counting Recessions, TV Ad Revenue Just Fell More Than in at Least 20 years

TV ad sales in the U.S. fell 7.8 percent to $61.8 billion last year, the steepest drop outside of a recession in at least 20 years, while sales at cable networks slumped for the first time in almost a decade. And there’s no sign of a pickup in 2018, excluding cyclical events like the Olympics and the midterm elections, according to data from Magna Global.

The decline in TV viewership is accelerating as online rivals Google and Facebook have increased their investments in video, capturing almost every new advertising dollar entering the marketplace. TV ad sales have fallen even as global advertising grows, leading research firms and analysts to predict that the business may not return to growth.

“In a healthy economy, we’re looking at no growth in advertising from traditional media companies,” said Michael Nathanson, an analyst with research firm MoffettNathanson. “That’s a worrying trend.”

AT&T Probes White House Role in Time Warner Case

AT&T wants to show political tampering as it seeks evidence about whether President Donald Trump influenced the Justice Department’s decision to sue to block the company’s proposed acquisition of Time Warner.

AT&T wants communications between the Justice Department and the White House about the Time Warner takeover, according to a person familiar with the matter. It’s also looking to put the head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division, Makan Delrahim, on the witness stand at trial, the person said.

If approved, the deal would reshape the media landscape by uniting a telecom giant with the owner of CNN, Warner Bros., TNT, TBS and HBO. AT&T, the owner of DirecTV, is the largest pay-TV distributor, as well as a powerhouse in mobile phones and landlines. The Justice Department has argued that letting AT&T own the films and TV shows that flow down its pipes would harm consumers and competitors.

Is the Murdoch Empire 'Fit and Proper' Enough to Hold Broadcasting Licenses? New Questions Emerge in the U.K.

21st Century Fox faces the prospect of another hurdle in its bid for pay-TV provider Sky after a U.K. High Court judge allowed a legal challenge to proceed over whether Sky would remain fit to hold a broadcasting license under the control of media billionaire Rupert Murdoch.

Political advocacy group Avaaz, a key opponent of the 11.7 billion-pound ($16.2-billion) takeover, said Wednesday that it won the right to a judicial review of last year’s ruling by communications regulator Ofcom that Fox would be a so-called “fit and proper” owner of Sky. The case should be heard before the end of June, Avaaz said.

The challenge is the latest obstacle for Murdoch’s bid, which has faced a succession of regulatory and political tests to get clearance. Fox, which already owns 39 percent of Sky, is trying to purchase the remainder and plans to sell the broadcaster to Walt Disney Co. as part of their $52.4 billion asset deal announced in December.

Introducing the Tap-to-Pay Billboard, a digital billboard paired with an unattended tap-to-pay terminal that is selling four limited edition prints inspired by Mazda’s philosophies and iconic vehicles. The Digital Storefront is running in the busy retail concourse level of the Royal Bank Plaza on Bay Street in Toronto. Mercedes-Benz: The Battle Continues

It’s the fourth consecutive time that Formula 1 Mercedes-AMG Petronas team won the World Championship. An extraordinary result, especially because the challenge was against the only true legend of world circuits: the Ferrari. For this reason, we wanted to celebrate the victory with a tribute to the “Cavallino Rampante” to underline Ferrari greatness in relation to Mercedes-Benz victory because “The value of a victory is to be found in the greatness of the opponent.”
