The Lesson of Facebook’s Hammer Drop? Build a Community, Not an Audience

Last week, Mark Zuckerberg announced a massive shift in what Facebook’s 2 billion users will see on their news feeds: fewer posts from businesses and media companies, and more from friends and family. It’s a change that Zuckerberg says is a direct result of community feedback that “public content–posts from businesses, brands, and media–is crowding…

W+K Issues Statement on ‘Harassment or Inappropriate Conduct’ as London CSO Exits

In case you missed it, Wieden + Kennedy parted with partner and chief strategy officer Paul Colman this week. All the major trade pubs ran related stories last night or this morning.

The statement that W+K PR released to confirm the news is a very significant part of this story. We should be very clear that the agency did not discuss the reasons for Colman’s firing—and neither did any individual sources who spoke to us on the record.

“W+K does not tolerate harassment of any kind. If harassment or inappropriate conduct is reported, a timely investigation is conducted, and if a violation is found to have occurred, appropriate corrective action is taken.

We also do not comment on internal matters.”

But what was that comment about, if not internal matters? Compare it to the statement that IPG released after Joe Alexander left:

“In this case, as soon as IPG was made aware of these allegations, we made sure that the right action was taken. We continue to look into the manner in which this situation was handled.”

And this one from AKQA regarding former creative lead Duan Evans last November:

“Duan Evans resigned with immediate effect during a disciplinary process and while he was suspended from the business.”

The one thing these releases have in common is that they are somehow both specific and vague. W+K’s is unique in that it does not reference the individual in question, though it was provided to media outlets as part of a larger comment regarding his departure.

WPP, on the other hand, allowed Gustavo Martinez to release his own direct denial when news of the Erin Johnson lawsuit first broke nearly two years ago:

“I am aware of the allegations made against me by a J. Walter Thompson employee in a suit filed in New York Federal Court. I want to assure our clients and my colleagues that there is absolutely no truth to these outlandish allegations, and I am confident that this will be proven in court.”

The casual observer might conclude that agencies have grown a bit more cautious in the ways they respond to potentially controversial staffing stories. They have also become more direct in describing the policies they follow when addressing alleged HR complaints.

Persil ProClean Buys Back Into the Super Bowl as Cleaning Brands Battle on New Turf

Home cleaning products haven’t typically found a place between all the beer ads and car commercials that tend to dominate the Super Bowl. But the category has found a home in the big game in recent years as odor eliminators and laundry detergents look to reach the increasing number of women who have been tuning in to the grudge match.

Laundry detergent Persil ProClean is returning to the Super Bowl in 2018 with a “playful” ad starring Peter Hermann, who will reprise his role as the “Professional.”

This is the third consecutive spot for the brand. Its ad in last year’s Super Bowl, “10 Dimensions,” was directed by Elizabeth Banks. ProClean made its Super Bowl debut in 2016 with a 15-second spot bragging about how a little-known brand topped every big rival in tests. Both spots starred Hermann.

Until now, Stella Artois had been the only marketer to pre-release its full Super Bowl ad. On Thursday, 10 days before the game, it was joined by Groupon, Lexus, Pringles and Febreze.

Groupon, which was criticized for seeming to make fun of charity appeals in its last Super Bowl ad (“Tibet”), this time will not be misunderstood: Just watch what happens to the rich guy who doesn’t support local businesses in this ad starring Tiffany Haddish.

ICYMI: Here's Ann Curry Slamming What Megyn Kelly Just Did as 'Not Journalism'

In media-about-media-about-media-about-media news, ABC’s “The View” has helpfully been posting a lengthy clip from its Tuesday show on its social channels (including Twitter, above, last night), in which former NBC “Today” co-host Ann Curry slams NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Today” host Megyn Kelly, calling something she did on her Monday show “not journalism.” Got that? Here, if you haven’t been keeping score at home, is the quick run-down:

In September, Kelly famously asked her guest Jane Fonda about her past plastic surgery, and Fonda immediately took offense (“We really want to talk about that now?”).

At Sundance over the weekend, in a sit-down with Variety, Fonda said of the incident, “It wasn’t like I was upset. I was stunned. It was so inappropriate. It showed that she’s not that good an interviewer.”
