Watch the Newest Ads on TV From Lenovo, Beats, Walmart and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, the real-time TV ad measurement company with attention and conversion analytics from more than seven million smart TVs. The ads here ran on national TV for the first time over the weekend.

A few highlights: Disney and Lenovo hype Star Wars Jedi Challenges, which uses a Lenovo VR/AR headset and your smartphone along with a lightsaber controller for gameplay. Walmart encourages you to “Bring your flavor” in an ad that calls attention to the retailer’s stock of Thanksgiving-dinner essentials. And Jeep serves up a patriotism-themed ad timed to Veterans Day that uses Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag” as its stirring soundtrack.

TriHonda Puts Its $40 Million U.S. Media Account in Review

As creative agencies compete for fewer, smaller, more project-oriented contracts, the most important question for many media shops is “do we really want to go through yet another review?”

According to three people who spoke to us, the latest client to issue a media RFP is TriHonda, the group consisting of more than 60 New York/New Jersey/Connecticut-area Honda dealerships.

The review remains in its early stages, and it marks the first time TriHonda has sought a new agency since 2012, when it assigned creative and media work to Publicis Kaplan Thaler and MediaVest, respectively.

A Publicis Media representative confirmed that the incumbent currently known as Starcom would not defend in the review, though it will continue working with other Honda dealerships across the country.

Honda’s national creative and media agency of record RPA declined to comment on the RFP, which is unrelated to a January review in which the indie shop beat out MediaVest to win back the account after three years.

Honda spends about $600 million on marketing in the U.S. each year. Two parties familiar with the business placed TriHonda’s annual paid media budget at just below $40 million, which is the same total Adweek reported in 2012.

We’ve been unable to reach TriHonda for comment.

It’s unclear whether TriHonda still retains a creative agency of record since the organization’s social media accounts only share national campaigns and its YouTube page is bare.

But here’san uncomfortable trip back in time to 1987, when thinly-disguised jokes about sexual dysfunction were apparently all the rage.

Here’s Yet Another Scathing Spoof of the Modern Ad Agency from Portal A and Adweak

Ad agencies are maybe possibly sometimes a little ridiculous. But you clicked on this blog, so you didn’t need us to tell you that.

Take it from the anonymous “young” person who spoke to Digiday about the culture at his/her agency for a post today:

We play nice, but we’re in a catty environment. Nobody wants to help each other. As an industry, we’re always at each other’s throats, or at least at each other’s collarbones. There is a culture of gossip that’s hurtful. Agency people are incestuous. The gossip follows people around. There are people who go to eight agencies in five years and come out with negative stories. People are real assholes.

Well that one hit close to home. Thankfully, there is a whole subset of agencies that take the time to produce pieces specifically making fun of their own business beyond all those Ad Council shorts. One of them is Portal A. The L.A. and S.F. digital studio does work for real clients, most notably its annual YouTube “Rewind” series, but in our minds it is still best known for its spoof of the Dove Real Beauty campaign from four years ago.

The latest in its Ad Hoc series (which started with the Dove video) is a self-explanatory collaboration with our friends at Adweak titled “Genius at Work: Inside the World of Modern Advertising.”
“We work with brands all the time, but AdHoc has been our chance to take a step back and have some fun with the absurdity of the ad industry,” said Portal A co-founder and executive producer Nate Houghteling. “AdWeak was the perfect match for us because they’re doing the same thing but with a different angle. Luckily for both of us, there’s plenty of nonsense to go around.”

See, they only poke fun because they’ve been through it themselves.

The Adweak team’s deep cynicism comes from years in the trenches, and we have little doubt that the good people at Portal A have spent more than one afternoon trying to come up with a good hashtag for a soap brand … or a hotel chain, or a tablet, or a bunch of little emoji-like things that Twitter used to make its service more exciting to people who aren’t 45-year-old journalists obsessing over the latest White House press conference.

For more of the same, Canada’s Strategy calls on the top agencies north of the border each year to create their own parodies of the ad business. Here’s BBDO on adding shits to your sheets.

One thing we would like to ask some of these unnamed spoof specialist agencies: why don’t you share your client work? Like, the stuff that pays your bills. Are you embarrassed by your day jobs, or what?

Samsung: Inspirational Voices

Samsung and Association for Child Education wanted to create an online education platform (sesgetirenler.com) in order to prepare hearing impaired children, who started to use cochlear implant and regained their hearing ability, for the future.

Therefore, we thought it would be appropriate to call these children “Inspirational Voices”. Then, we prepared a film to introduce the project and help hearing impaired children raise their voices.

In this film featured by hearing impaired children, we showed how much they could achieve through their reflexes and intuitions, and broke down the prejudices. We demonstrated that these children could achieve much more when they are provided with the right education at an earlier stage.

The Digital Double Standard

Here’s the way I see it: The difference between old and new media publishers (or traditional and digital-native publishers, if you prefer) is that, while both struggle to stay afloat, some new media companies just don’t quite realize it yet.

I’ve been thinking about the economics of all publishing in recent weeks as more and more bad news has come out of medialand. Cond Nast, for instance, announced it was shuttering the print edition of Teen Vogue and cutting back the frequency of many of its glossies (e.g., Architectural Digest and GQ will go from 12 issues per year to 11).

There was also some extreme bad news that came out of the digital-native world: Local news sites DNAinfo and Gothamist (which DNAinfo had acquired only in March) abruptly shut down. But the bottom line there was obscured by some high drama.

Chipotle Says There's No Link to 'Supergirl' Actor's Illness

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. said there’s no connection between the company and an illness suffered by “Supergirl” actor Jeremy Jordan, who blamed the burrito chain for making him severely sick.

“There is not a link and there are no other reports of illness at the restaurant,” Quinn Kelsey, a spokeswoman for the Denver-based company, said in an email. The location–in Houston–hasn’t been closed, she said.

The incident threatens to renew concerns about food safety at Chipotle, which has struggled to bounce back from an E. coli crisis in 2015 that sickened customers. Jordan said last week that he was hospitalized after eating at the chain.
