Amnesty International: Skins of Peace

Current political tensions have led to Arabs and Muslims being mistreated at airports in the USA and Europe because of their passports. Behind this, there is a strong misconception that all arabs and muslims are terrorists and that Islam is a religion that preaches hate. So together with Amnesty International New York, we have come up with an idea that will turn these passports into messages of tolerance and peace.

The Skins of Peace is a collection of passport covers that showcase messages inspired by the holy book of Islam, The Quran. Adapted into a language all airport officials will understand: English.

BBDO Minneapolis Hires Liz Giel as Vice President, Director of Strategy

BBDO Minneapolis welcomed Liz Giel as vice president, director of strategy.

“Liz was chosen for her ability to unlock insights that drive both effective and highly creative work,” BBDO Minneapolis CEO Neil White said in a statement. “Beyond this, she’s a great cultural fit and I look forward to working with her to make The Work work better for our clients.”

Giel joins BBDO from Carmichael Lynch, where she has spent the past four years serving as group planning director on the agency’s Subaru of America account. Before joining Carmichael Lynch she spent over two and a half years as a strategist with Fallon, where she led brand and digital strategy for clients including Cadillac, Travelers Insurance, Cruzan Rum and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Prior to Fallon she spent a year at Haberman, leading strategy for such brands as Volvo, Organic Valley, Annie’s Homegrown and the Organic Trade Association.

“BBDO has a history of incredible storytelling, but now that storytelling is being enhanced by the ability to uncover rich insights, better anticipate the audience’s response, and make the stories increasingly personalized,” Giel said in a statement. “I am excited to bring these expanding capabilities to our clients.”

180LA Is Leaving Its Office Behind to Move Into Playa Vista’s ‘Silicon Beach’

Omnicom’s 180LA will soon move out of its longtime office in downtown Santa Monica after just over a decade.

The agency’s staff are getting ready to say goodbye to the Santa Monica Pier and hello to nearby Playa Vista’s Silicon Beach, which is one of several corporate “campuses” in the area. (It’s not to be confused with nearby Playa Jefferson, which also houses Omnicom and R/GA among other companies.)

An agency spokesperson wrote:

Our lease in Santa Monica is up and we’re moving to Playa Vista this summer where several agencies now reside. The move will allow 180LA to capitalize on better value and amenities. We are busy creating our new space, and look forward to moving the 180 culture a little further South.

The shop will now be much closer to certain competitors like 72andSunny and Ogilvy along with media agencies (Group M, Mindshare) and tech giants (Google, Yahoo, etc.).

As for the reason behind the move, 180LA declined to comment. But the parties that brought it to our attention noted the recent loss of the Adidas account and subsequent departure of some executives including creative directors David Povill and Dave Cuccinello and chief strategy officer/managing partner Mike Harris. The Amsterdam office’s Adidas co-leads also went to Joan in January. (Adidas has yet to comment on that review.)

180LA, which ECD Rafael Rizuto called “the best performing office in the entire TBWA network” less than a year ago, continues to produce the work. According to another source close to the matter, a team from MillerCoors traveled to Los Angeles this week to review forthcoming campaigns for Miller Lite.

Is a Havas-Vivendi Tie-Up a Step Closer?

The possibility of a merger between Havas and Vivendi looks a little closer after Havas CEO Yannick Bollor’s comments at the group’s first quarter results presentation today.

The two French companies have one important factor in common: Vivendi Chairman Vincent Bollor Yannick’s father is also the biggest shareholder in Havas.

Yesterday, Reuters reported that Vivendi CEO Arnaud de Puyfontaine said a merger with Havas could “make sense.”

Lowdown: Analysts Don't Seem to Care at All About Pepsi's Kendall Jenner Ad

The Lowdown is Ad Age’s weekly look at news nuggets from across the world of marketing, including trends, campaign tidbits, executive comings and goings and more.

Gary Vaynerchuk, speaking at the Association of National Advertisers annual meeting last year, made plain his ambition to buy an orphan packaged-goods brand with great equity he can make greater. Now he’s got his chance. Unilever wants to sell its margarine business (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, etc.) and RB (Reckitt Benckiser) is “exploring strategic options” on French’s Mustard and Frank’s Red Hot Sauce. So is Vaynerchuk interested? Not really. While he was reportedly close on another unnamed brand recently, he said he sees such a deal coming “more in 24 to 48 months, not 24 to 48 weeks.” He’s interested in businesses with $50 million to $200 million in revenue. Categories he’s most intrigued by are toothpaste and bubblegum. But he remains focused on running VaynerMedia, and doing such a deal may be based on having “a proper CEO in place to run VaynerMedia” though he may try to do both initially. He confirmed recent reports of layoffs — “17 to 18 out of 750,” net of new hires and promotions. Vaynerchuk said the layoffs reflected a shift toward creative services and away from production, and similar moves could come in the future as he shifts focus toward such areas as small business and consulting.

Watch the Newest Ads on TV From Arla, Bank of America, Castrol and More

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, the real-time TV ad measurement company with attention analytics from 10 million smart TVs. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are ranked by digital activity (including online views and social shares) over the past week.

Among the new releases, NFL star Vince Wilfork reads from a book titled “Words of Strength” to make a point about how Castrol EDGE is “three times stronger against viscosity breakdown that the other leading motor oils.” Arla serves up another one of its adorable animated ads in which it asks little kids to define terms such as rBST; Leah, age 7, thinks rBST is a scary monster “with razor-sharp horns” — but, per the announcer, it’s actually an artificial growth hormone “given to some cows, but not the cows that make Arla cheese.” And Bank of America also goes with animation, using a story titled “The Elephant Guide to Aging” to make a point about money management.

FCC Chief Sets Up Clash With Call to Repeal Net Neutrality

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has proposed rolling back the Obama-era net-neutrality rule as the regulation’s defenders vowed a “tsunami” of resistance.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said he would ask the agency next month to begin considering removing the strong legal authority that underpins the rules, and to take suggestions for replacement regulations.

“When we are saddled with FCC rules that will deny many Americans high-speed internet access and jobs, doing nothing is nothing doing,” Pai said in a speech Wednesday in Washington. “Instead, we need rules that focus on growth and infrastructure investment, rules that expand high-speed internet access everywhere. Rules that give Americans more online choice, faster speeds, and more innovation.”

Veja o filme no player acima.

Ad Age “Media Guy” columnist Simon Dumenco’s media roundup for the morning of Tuesday, April 25:

1. So maybe the government won’t shut down after all? “Republicans had been caught in one of their biggest dilemmas of the year: Whether to cross President Donald Trump and ignore his demand for border wall funding or join him and invite a government shutdown while the GOP controls all of Washington,” Politico’s Burgess Everett writes. “But then Trump gave GOP lawmakers an escape hatch, telling conservative journalists at a White House reception Monday evening that he would be comfortable delaying a fight over the wall until September.” Side note: Speaking of Politico, “Patrick Steel, an investment banker for the past 16 years at the firm of FBR Capital Markets & Co., has been named Politico’s next CEO,” per Politico.

2. “Breitbart Has Been Denied Permanent Congressional Press Credentials,” per BuzzFeed News. Meanwhile, over on the Breitbart home page this morning: “Far-Left Voters More Likely to Share Their Wives, Right Wingers More Sexually Dominant, Claims Study.”

ESPN Cuts 100 Household Names as Rights Fees, Viewer Habits Eat Into Profits

Just hours before it will begin televising its comprehensive 2017 NFL Draft coverage, ESPN this morning has begun laying off more than 100 on-air personalities, beat reporters and radio hosts, as well as a number of people who work behind the scenes at the sports colossus.

The staff reductions come as ESPN president John Skipper looks to offset a shrinking subscriber base and a concurrent spike in rights fees. Calls to those who will bear the brunt of the layoffs began earlier this morning, shortly after Skipper issued a memo to employees alerting them of the impending cuts.

“A necessary component of managing change involves constantly evaluating how we best utilize all of our resources, and that sometimes involves difficult decisions,” Skipper wrote, adding that the shift in ESPN’s content strategy (which is particularly evident in the evolution of its “SportsCenter” franchise) demands a reevaluation of its talent roster.
