We Hear: DigitasLBi And SapientNitro Boston Will Soon Share an Office Building
Posted in: UncategorizedThis week we hear that Publicis Groupe’s DigitasLBi and SapientNitro or Publicis.Sapient will soon share a space in Boston.
One source with direct knowledge of the matter tells us that the rumor is “absolutely true.” The location of this future shared space is unclear, though another source says that the DigitasLBi Boston team will be moving into SapientNitro’s office, which is less than a mile away.
The reasons behind the move are also unclear at the moment. The larger DigitasLBi organization has parted ways with several high-ranking members of various departments in recent months including GCD Kenny Rennard, chief media officer Baba Shetty, SVP/creative Greg Kaplan, Chicago-based GCD Bill Matznick, president Norman de Greve and EVP/ECD Rob Rizzo.
This reads like a standard round of agency revolving door, though we hear that other creatives have left DigitasLBi Boston and none of the executives mentioned have been replaced to date with the exception of Rizzo (Doug Schiff now leads creative across the agency’s Boston and Detroit offices).
A Digitas spokesperson declined to comment for this post.
Volkswagen: Slow motion

In order to launch the new Golf GTI in Argentina a 100-meter scenery with different settings full of actors was set up. With a high-speed camera installed inside the vehicle and the help of a professional pilot this scene was travelled and filmed in one single shot. The fast commercial result undetectable for human eye and work as a teaser on TV and YouTube pre-rolls, which redirect people to watch the slow motion version (teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9bM3znsiUY&feature=share).
Lawyers File Motions to Dismiss Erin Johnson’s Lawsuit
Posted in: UncategorizedWPP is not backing down.
That’s the summary of today’s filings in U.S. District Court, in which lawyers for the holding company, JWT and former CEO/chairman Gustavo Martinez submitted documents arguing that the judge in the case should dismiss Erin Johnson’s lawsuit on the federal, state and city levels.
In short, the law firm of Davis & Gilbert LLP argues in a 30-page document that Martinez’s behavior (which we and other outlets have documented extensively) does not amount to harassment and did not compromise Johnson’s ability to do her job despite the fact that it may well have been “offensive.” It also claims that many of the incidents mentioned in her suit are “irrelevant” since they (allegedly) occurred before she lodged her first formal complaints with JWT chief talent officer Laura Agostini in May 2015, thereby rendering her behavior “protected.”
As evidence that Martinez did not create a “hostile work environment” for Johnson, the lawyers mention a text message she allegedly sent him in February, 10 days before her own legal team let WPP and JWT know that they would be filing a suit.
In the message, Davis & Gilbert say Johnson told Martinez that she had rejected an outside job offer “because I am loyal to you and what you are doing. I felt like we had a good year together. So I hope I wasn’t wrong to stay. Lol”
The firm also calls Johnson’s amended complaint alleging violations of the Equal Pay Act and Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act “frivolous,” essentially arguing that Martinez’s allegedly discriminatory behavior did not affect her as a white woman and that she cannot claim that he sexually harassed her because he never “actually talked about ‘the sex.’” This despite him (again, allegedly) stating that she should “come to him so he could ‘rape [her]’ in the bathroom” on one occasion after she told him that rape jokes like the one he made at a 2015 meeting with clients and employees at a Miami hotel were inappropriate.
Johnson’s lawyers spoke to AdAge today and implied that they had not expected today’s update, stating, “we are looking forward to submitting our response and getting on with this search for the truth” and adding that the WPP legal team was “plucking one text [message] and misstating it” in the interest of discrediting Johnson.
The only real conclusion one can draw from the latest filing is that the WPP/JWT legal team has decided to stick with its strategy of downplaying the significance of the incidents mentioned in Johnson’s suit after quickly abandoning efforts to deny that they had ever occurred.
Martinez’s law firm, which he hired after resigning in March, also filed its own separate motion to dismiss today using the same rationale.

Posted in: UncategorizedW+K São Paulo Names Eduardo Lima as Its Newest ECD
Posted in: UncategorizedThe Brazilian offices of Wieden+Kennedy named Eduardo Lima–veteran of various South American shops–as its newest executive creative director. He will co-lead the creative department there along with fellow ECD Renato Simoes.
Lima joins the indie operation in São Paulo after taking a yearlong break from the advertising world. During that time he was “living in Los Angeles working on his own projects and taking a sabbatical.”
Prior to that frankly enviable period, Lima spent more than two decades at F/Nazca S&S, or the Brazilian outpost of the Saatchi & Saatchi network. He was “general creative director there,” winning several industry awards during his tenure include the first Cannes Grand Prix for Brazil in the video category.
“I think my love story with advertising is ongoing,” Lima said. “I just took a short break to catch my breath. The whole process with W+K was wonderful, both with André [Gustavo] and Renato and also with Colleen [DeCourcy] and Dave [Luhr] in Portland.”
He added, “The icing on the cake was having the honor of spending an hour with Dan Wieden, who taught me a lesson in humanity. W+K’s independence, philosophy, and its obsessive search for creativity has a lot in common with what I believe to be the best route to follow. I will continue fighting for high quality work, now flying the W+K flag.”
“We are so extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished in São Paulo in six short years: progressive creative work in TV and digital, significant business growth, strong client partnerships, and an inspiring office culture,” said DeCourcy in a statement. “Edu is not only a proven creative force, he is a fitting spiritual leader for the continuation of this journey. I could not be happier than to have Renato Simoes and Eduardo Lima representing Wieden creativity in Brazil.”
In case you weren’t aware, W+K opened its first Brazilian office in 2010. Since then, the operation has grown to more than 200 employees and won such notable accounts as AB InBev’s Corona and Skol, various Mondelez brands and Subway (which operates in a very different market in Brazil). The team in São Paulo also works for such Wieden clients as Nike, Old Spice and the Brazilian wing of Booking.com.
Lima begins his new job in August.
