Six Things You Didn't Know About Saatchi London's Rob Potts

After a storied career working on memorable campaigns out of top U.K. shops Fallon and Mother, Rob Potts became executive creative director at Saatchi & Saatchi London in June 2014, alongside his partner Andy Jex. The pair took over the agency’s creative reigns after Paul Silburn and Kate Stanners moved up to group roles.

During their tenure, the agency has turned out remarkable work, from the insanely funny “Pooface” for Pampers, to more thought-provoking ideas such as the campaign that put actor David Harewood in “whiteface” for Operation Black Vote.

Mr. Potts’ colorful life extends beyond advertising, of course, as you’ll see in this edition of Six Things.

Norm Macdonald Becomes Latest Comic to Play Colonel Sanders

KFC has hired Norm Macdonald as the newest comic to play Colonel Sanders in its commercials, a switch from fellow “Saturday Night Live” veteran Darrell Hammond who had been in the role.

Mr. Hammond had only been starring as the Colonel since May. Now, it’s Mr. Macdonald’s turn to don the white suit and hawk fried chicken. Mr. Macdonald, who appeared on “SNL” for years, more recently has been a judge on the TV show “Last Comic Standing.”

“Other than not quite looking like him, his voice being different, and his inability to cook the world’s best chicken, we thought Norm was the perfect choice to play the Real Colonel. I think the fans will agree,” KFC U.S. Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Hochman said in a statement.

With Retooled Atlas Under the Hood, Facebook Closes in on Linking Ads to Sales Across Devices

The holy grail of digital advertising is tying an ad — any ad running on any digital property — to a subsequent product sale. Facebook, Google, AOL, Yahoo, Amazon, Twitter and other top digital ad sellers are pursuing it. But Facebook increasingly appears to be closest to success, according to industry executives following the quest.

Most recently, Facebook has run a small test with a brick-and-mortar retailer, tracing ads that ran in one of multiple third-party mobile apps to sales made in one of the retailer’s stores. “We actually connected their point-of-sale [system] and were able to connect it through — just like with one location with one little experiment,” said David Jakubowski, Facebook’s head of ad tech. “They were able to show there was a 13% lift in sales as a result of a whole bunch of this mobile activity.”

Here’s how Facebook is getting there. First, Facebook’s registered user base of more than 1.4 billion people give it a way to track many people’s online behavior whether they’re on or off Facebook. Facebook can see when users are on certain third-party mobile apps and deliver an ad based on things you like on Facebook. Second, there’s the company’s Atlas ad server and the growing ad-tech business Facebook has built around it.

IAB Says HTML5 Is New Standard, Adobe Agrees

In a move that is sure to change the digital advertising landscape, the Interactive Advertising Bureau laid out an overhaul to its display creative guidelines Monday that will make HTML5 the new standard in interactive marketing, further encouraging agencies to move away from Adobe’s Flash.

Adobe supported the move and helped update the voluntary guidelines which are intended to create a unified and scalable digital advertising industry along with other members like AOL, Google and Yahoo.

“Markets take time to migrate and I think a company like Adobe, who have held the previous de facto market standards, have redefined themselves,” Scott Cunningham, general manager of the IAB Tech Lab, told Ad Age. “Adobe’s software suite already has support for HTML5 … You also have different companies that have emerged with a different de facto standard, but I think Adobe has positioned itself very well, especially at the IAB Tech Lab.”
