2001 Theme Helps Stihl Make Bold Statement About Leaf Blowers
Posted in: UncategorizedWith its many appearances in TV, film, and commercials over the years, one can only imagine how many heads Richard Strauss’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra” has occupied ever since it was made famous in the opening of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
For now, though, let’s focus on the latest usage of the 2001 theme in a new spot promoting leaf blowers courtesy of Virgina Beach-based outdoor power tool manufacturer Stihl (which is also apparently the world’s leading chainsaw retailer).
“Power” is, in fact, the operative word in this new ad, created by Paris agency Altmann + Pacreau, which shows just how much punch Stihl leaf blowers can pack with some rather bombastic, cosmic flair and a perfect counterpart in Strauss’s composition. A+P CCO Olivier Altmann tells AdFreak:
“Having done many ideas with leaves in the past, we thought we should go for something less expected to stand above the competitors in an allegoric and funny way.”

FCB Garfinkel Names Eric Cosper Chief Creative Officer
Posted in: UncategorizedFCB Garfinkel has named Eric Cosper the agency’s new chief creative officer.
The top creative role has been vacant at the New York office of the Interpublic agency network since Javier Campapiano left in June to be chief creative officer of Saatchi & Saatchi’s Latin American operations. Mr. Campopiano joined the agency’s New York office in January 2013 after serving as regional creative director for FCB in Latin America.
“After a long and in-depth search, Kofi [Amoo-Gottfried, chief strategy officer] and I found in Eric the creative partner we were looking for: strong creative leadership, diversity of client experience, versatility of his creative work, and a strong belief that the only way to move clients’ businesses is through changing consumers’ behavior,” said CEO Lee Garfinkel in a statement. Mr. Cosper starts Monday, April 20.
UPDATE: Tim Scott Departs mcgarrybowen
Posted in: UncategorizedTim Scott, international CEO and president of mcgarrybowen Chicago, is departing the agency for an undisclosed client-side marketing position, AdAge reports.
Scott’s departure follows last month’s hiring of Simon Pearce as president of its New York office and chief client officer, succeeding Tom Sewell, who held the position since May of 2014 (and continues on at the agency in an innovation role). The agency stated that it will begin a search for a new Chicago president, who will also assume chief client officer responsibilities. Laurel Flatt, group managing director, will act as interim general manager of the office until the search is completed. Gordon Bowen, chairman and chief creative officer of mcgarrybowen, will temporarily assume Scott’s international CEO role.
Scott arrived at mcgarrybowen back in 2009 as a managing director, just two years after the opening of the agency’s Chicago office, following a stint at DDB Chicago as a global business director.
The full statement from Bowen:
“I am grateful and proud of the work Tim has done to build our brand, first in Chicago and then around the world. He is a dear friend, trusted leader, and mentor to many. We are very grateful for his contributions, and we wish him a lifetime of luck and success in his future endeavors.”
The news seems to confirm a tip we received weeks ago about changes coming to macgarrybowen’s international leadership (assuming there aren’t more on the way).
Update: Land O’Lakes announced that Scott will be joining the company as senior vice president and chief marketing officer, responsible for overseeing B2C and B2B branding and marketing strategy, effective April 22nd.
Ringo Starr Couldn't Be More Chill in His First Campaign for Skechers
Posted in: Uncategorized
“Rock out in comfort” is a headline that will horrify rock ‘n’ roll purists—but Ringo Starr doesn’t care. The Beatles drummer is relaxation personified in his first campaign for Skechers, as the brand continues its association with aging legends following the Pete Rose ad on the Super Bowl.
Check out the commercial and print work below.
“I love to be relaxed,” Ringo says in a statement. “I don’t know why people think because you’re a well-known pop star that we relax differently. We don’t—we hang out at home, we have dinner, go to the movies. I like to actually sit on a beach in the sun and listen to the waves. But you can’t do that every day, can you?”
Ringo released his 18th solo album, Postcards from Paradise, on March 31 and will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist this Saturday.

Layoffs at Lowe Roche
Posted in: UncategorizedLess than a week after Canada’s Lowe Roche announced new leadership in the form of co-presidents Marie-Lise Campeau and Jeff Dack, the agency has laid off some of the key members of its team including its executive creative director and its longest-serving employee.
In case you missed it, the shift began in February as the larger Lowe and Partners organization pushed out CEO Monica Ruffo after more than five years. At the time, sources told us that the announcement surprised the team during an all-staff meeting and that many feared for their own jobs moving forward.
We can confirm that the departing employees include ECD Jane Murray, Director of Production Beth MacKinnon, and office manager Marian Shanahan.
A separate source tells us that the agency also laid off a top-ranking account executive and all of its financial staffers. The total number affected is unclear at the moment.
Here’s the official statement from the agency’s new co-presidents, Campeau and Dack:
“The nature of our business requires us to constantly adapt to an ever-changing landscape. Occasionally this includes restructuring to best serve our current clients and position ourselves for the future. It is never easy to part ways with a colleague; in fact, it’s the toughest part of this business and pains us all to see someone go.”
Some background on the departing staffers: Murray, who has spent more than twenty years in the ad industry to date, wrote copy for MacLaren McCann before serving as ACD at Ogilvy, CP+B, and Sid Lee; she then worked as a creative director in the TBWA organization before joining Lowe in 2012, and her recent work includes PSAs for clients such as Canadian Cancer Society, The Missing Children’s Network, and The Power of Movement. She also helped create the 2013 project that confirmed a few obvious things: ad folks drink nine times as much bourbon and watch nearly twice the porn as your average Canadian. (They’re also almost two times as likely to mute the ads on live TV.)
MacKinnon spent more than a decade in production at TAXI Toronto before heading to Lowe; a source calls her “a veteran of the agency” and tells us that Executive Assistant/Office Manager Shanahan was Lowe’s longest-serving employee; she spent more than two decades with the organization.
No word on their replacements.
Old Spice Will Drop a Man in the Woods and Let Twitch Viewers Control Him for 3 Days
Posted in: Uncategorized
Old Spice is tapping into the gamer community, which clearly overlaps with its own target, with an interesting campaign on Twitch—the live social video platform for gamers—in which viewers get to control a real human being dropping in a forest for three days.
Beginning Thursday at 10 a.m. PT, visitors to twitch.tv/oldspice will use the site’s chat feature to send commands to the man to perform. Users will work together to unlock achievements or activities for Nature Man. (“Arm wrestle an obviously fake bear? Hear stories from a wise tree? Stumble across interesting and good smelling characters? The scenarios are endless—and completely up to the participating gamers,” says Wieden + Kennedy, which built the experience.)
Beyond that, well, we’ll just have to see how it unfolds.
“Old Spice is thrilled to bring an outdoor gaming experience like no other to our fans and the Twitch community,” Kate DiCarlo, communications manager for P&G beauty care, tells AdFreak. “We’re always looking for new ways to entertain and build brand loyalty with our fans, and Twitch is the perfect partner to help us reach the gaming and live streaming culture in an authentic way. Plus, with scent names like Timber, Amber and Citron, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our new nature-inspired Fresher Collection.”
The stream will run from 10 a.m. to sundown PT on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Sushi & Co Visual Identity

Mad Men Recap: I Drink Your Milkshake!
Posted in: UncategorizedAu revoir, Megan.
With the Drapers’ divorce all but consummated, it seems that the goodbyes to the major characters have begun. While it’s possible that Megan could make another appearance, it feels unlikely. There’s a certain finality to a break that comes with receiving a check for a $1 million ($6 million in 2015 dollars) from soon-to-be-ex-hubby Don as a sort of make-good for a few years of lying, cheating and bad advice.
As much as this was inevitable, it’s too bad Megan, a pivotal character that moved Don fully out of the Betty era and gained us a view of late 60s SoCal, couldn’t zou bisou bisou off into the sunset with a better episode. Last night’s was, as much of the “Mad Men”-watching internet opined, a bit of a mess.
