Long Story Short – Julien Douvier

MDC's Assembly Media-Agency Group Invests in Ad Tech Firm Samba TV

MDC media agency network Assembly has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in ad tech and measurement company Samba TV, said Assembly CEO Martin Cass.

The seven-year-old ad tech company serves digital ads across screens based on data it gleans from an IP address that might power several devices in a household. The company then melds data from online, mobile and digital TV viewing together into a single metric.

As part of the investment deal, MDC will have an exclusive six-week preview of any new product Samba launches.

Diet Pepsi Drops Aspartame — Is It Enough to Boost Sales?

PepsiCo is removing aspartame from Diet Pepsi in an attempt to reverse sagging diet soda fortunes. The brand will replace the much-maligned sweetener with sucralose, which will be combined with acesulfame potassium, or Ace-K.

“Diet cola drinkers in the U.S. told us they wanted aspartame-free Diet Pepsi and we’re delivering,” Seth Kaufman, senior VP of Pepsi and the flavors portfolio for PepsiCo North America Beverages, said in a statement. “We recognize that consumer demand is evolving and we’re confident that cola lovers will enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of this new product.”

The formula change was first reported by Beverage Digest. Diet Pepsi last changed its formula in 2013 when it blended Ace-K with aspartame, which had been in use since 1983, according to the trade publication.

W+K Amsterdam Continues ‘Booking Right’ for Booking.com

W+K Amsterdam continues its “Booking Right” campaign for Booking.com (which launched in February with “Booking Hero”) with a series of new 30-second ads continuing the almost-expletive filled schtick of previous spots.

In “Farewell,” for example, the voiveover explains “It’s time to bid farewell to this booking incredible island resort and its incredible island staff” as a family waves goodbye on their departure boat. The father decides differently, however, arguing with the voiceover that “This is not goodbye” as he dives in the water, swims to shore and hugs one of the staff members as his family looks on awkwardly. Something about the pace of the spot and the whole internal monolog arguing with the voiceover doesn’t quite work, although there’s humor to be found in the family’s pained expressions as the father embarrasses them.

Other spots in the campaign feature a group of disgruntled sports fans who find solace from the agony of defeat in an incredible hotel room, a jet-lagged traveler in Japan and a father who teaches his kids that there is life beyond smart phones at a remote cabin. The broadcast spots are currently running across the U.S. and will roll out in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia in the coming weeks.

Hallmark's Mother's Day Ads Are Shockingly Edgy. Just Kidding, They're Really, Really Sappy

Adland’s trend toward weepy gratitude continues, just in time for Mother’s Day, as Hallmark rolls out a series of videos from Leo Burnett in which people express love and appreciation for their moms.

The ads are part of the brand’s “Put Your Heart to Paper” campaign. Hallmark encourages its subjects—who are unaware their moms are watching in another room and will soon join them on camera—to express their deeper feelings beyond predictable phrases like “Thank you” and “I love you.”

This elicits some heartfelt, even impassioned responses.

Alana, raised by a single mother and a new mom herself, says, “If I didn’t have my mom, I think I would be lost.” Emilio says of his mother Floridalma, “She taught me what it is to be a man and what to look for in the mother of my children.”

It’s almost impossible not to be moved by this stuff. Which, of course, is the whole point. Still, the basic concept—thanking those you love—no matter how well intentioned or executed, feels tired, simply because it’s been trotted out so much lately.

Ogilvy’s award-winning “Why Wait Until Its Too Late?” campaign for funeral insurance company Dela got things rolling. Other notable entries include MetLife’s “Who Do You Live For?” spots from Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and the recent “Thank List” initiative created for American Greetings by Mullen.

With these mom-themed videos, Hallmark contributes a perfectly fine flight of tearjerkers to the category. At this point, however, I’m a little burned out on branded gratitude, and crying mostly because I wish the trend would stop.
