Discovery Is Latest Cable Net to Stop Touting Live Ratings

Discovery Communications said Wednesday that it will stop publicizing overnight ratings in favor of reporting viewing that occurs in the three days after a show airs.

Broadcast networks have traditionally seen the biggest boost in live-plus-three-day viewership, but cable has led the charge to de-emphasize live ratings. Discovery, whose networks include its eponymous flagship as well as TLC and Animal Planet, joins the likes of FX Networks and HBO, which have also shifted away from giving the media overnight ratings.

“As time-shifted viewership continues to increase, Live + Same-Day data no longer captures an accurate picture and value of our audience, and the lift from Live + 3 for many of our top programs is significant and growing,” said David Leavy, chief communications officer at Discovery.

Ikea Develops Its Own Emojis, for When You Need to Text About Swedish Meatballs

Men and women would get along better if they just had more domestically themed emojis to help them communicate properly in their text messages, says Ikea.

The Swedish furniture maker and brain-hacking home-retail maze is playing couples therapist in a new campaign from the Netherlands that announces the launch of Ikea Emoticons. These special little text-message pictures will supposedly reduce friction at home by letting you more efficiently text your significant other about having, for example, vacuumed the house.

Ridiculous as that premise may be, it’s a cute idea. And the resulting alphabet includes some clear winners, like a symbol for Swedish meatballs, as well as harder-to-explain gems, like a symbol for a green-eared dachshund. (Where in the real world does such a thing exist, without taking peyote?)

In the video, a salesman with a thick accent and expert method of smugly grabbing his white lab coat tells you where to download the emojis to your phone.

Alas, a number of reviews in Apple’s App Store pan the whole thing as a false promise. The emojis, critics claim, are not small at all but giant pictures that you have to copy and paste into your texts, which requires granting the app full access to a phone’s keyboard. (And funny thing, not everyone trusts Ikea.) Another review, which doesn’t read at all like an Ikea agency employee wrote it, blames the complaints on Apple’s coding restrictions.

Sadly, there are more fundamental flaws. For some inexplicable reason, the alphabet doesn’t seem to include a cinnamon bun emoji, or, even worse, a person tearing his or her own hair out and screaming while standing over a pile of sticks and pegs that are supposed to become a shelf emoji. Which means you’ll have to fake it with an Allen wrench and an angry face, just like in real life.

'Wearable' Deodorant? Google Working on 'Odor Removing Device'

Deodorant marketers have a new frenemy: Google is working on a digital, wearable, socially enabled deodorant device.

Google Technology Holdings was awarded a patent last week for an “odor removal device” that includes an activity sensor to help predict when you’ll get body odor, an automatic fragrance emitter to combat it and a system that tracks people in your social networks so you can avoid them when you smell bad.

“The route-suggesting portion may provide an alternate route to travel such that the predicted odor may not offend others that are socially connected to the user and that travel the same routes as the user,” according to the patent abstract.

A Tale of Two Old Navy Spokeswomen: Julia vs. Amy

Old Navy kicks off its spring campaign this week with a new spot featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus that plugs the brand’s “boyfriend jeans.”

The “Veep” and “Seinfeld” star took up the mantle as Old Navy’s spokeswoman in December, with a heavy rotation of TV ads throughout the holiday season. With a season as spokeswoman under her belt, Ms. Louis-Dreyfus is capturing consumers’ attention, but with a different comedic approach than her predecessor, Amy Poehler.

“They’re different sides of the same coin,” said Richard Christiansen, founder of Old Navy’s lead creative agency, Chandelier. “We can relate to both of their characters in different ways.”

Eharmony's Love for Data Goes Beyond Dating; It's Good for Marketing, Too

Relationship seekers on Eharmony are typically viewed as more serious or conservative than those on, say, Tinder. The dating service, after all, promises long-term relationship and puts users through a lenghty sign-up process.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t indulge in a vice or two. For instance, the international service knows its date candidates outside the U.S. are more comfortable with being matched with someone who smokes cigarettes or drinks booze than its U.S. members, so it broadened its matching algorithms for overseas users. That tidbit was teased from terrabytes of data the firm analyzes not only to calibrate algorithms used to choose potential matches but also to determine how best to communicate with audiences around the world.

The Santa Monica, Calif.-based company, which considers Zoosk, Match.com and ChristianMingle among its key competitors, said it will embark on an ambitious international expansion, aiming to add one new country to its roster each quarter.
