Dig further than the news with Slate

There more to the news than just news. There’s also ethics in gaming journalism. I kid! This isn’t about gamer gate, silly, it’s about Slate.com. While I love the infographic art direction, this campaign could be for any online news site. It looks good, but doesn’t give me a reason to visit Salon over Slate. Both of them suck anyway.

Pixelated Embroidered Photography

Afghan Restaurant in Australia

Sound Of Threads

Nest Parks Its Promotional Fire Truck in New York for the Holidays

A year ago, Nest Labs bought a retired fire truck off a Craigslist posting in Michigan, painted it blue and sent it across the country. Starting on Friday, the company, acquired by Google in January, is camping the truck in downtown Manhattan for the holidays as a promotional staging ground for its devices.

It’s the next step in the smart-home outfitter’s maiden marketing campaign, called “Thoughtful Things,” which began with a series of TV and print ads in November.

The truck is equipped with installations to demonstrate its internet-connected smoke detector, Nest Protect. Passersby can buy the Protect right there, along with Nest’s thermostat and video camera. The truck also hosts free smartphone charging, gift-wrapping and kids’ firefighter hats.

'Serial' Tweeters: Brands Joke About NPR's Podcast, With Poor Results

If there was any doubt remaining about the cultureal pull of NPR’s “Serial” podcast, marketers have started trying to jump in on the conversation.

Best Buy was the latest brand to post a tweet about the weekly podcast, in which journalist Sarah Koenig investigates the conviction of Adnan Syed in the 1998 murder of his ex-girlfriend.

The electronics retailer actually plays a prominent role in the story. Prosecutors said in court that Mr. Syed used a a pay phone in the parking lot of a Maryland Best Buy to call for a ride on the day of his ex-girlfriend’s disappearance. But Ms. Koenig was unable to corroborate that there was any pay phone in that lot.

You Won't Believe!!! … Why These Guys Are Beating the Crap Out of A Bag of Doritos

doritos_crash_super_bowl_2015_tiny_mouths.jpg

While watching this semifinalist entry for the 2015 Doritos Crash the Super Bowl competition might in some ways mildly conjure some thoughts related recent news, the end result is Crash the Super Bowl funny.

As the ad, created by Chuck McCarthy, opens, two guys are seen beating the crap out of…someone or something. A lady then runs up and yells, “Hey…”

The camera then cuts to the ground to reveal the guys are beating on a bag of Doritos. The lady adds, “Why do you guys hate Doritos so much?”

The joke is then revealed. We won’t give it away.

DocLab Expo: Immersive Reality & Digital Storytelling

64k

The most compelling part of the day for me was when i discovered the nominees of the Digital Storytelling competition. Because the focus of the selection is as much on new forms of interactivity as it is on strategies to weave a compelling story, all the projects were deep, multi-layered and compelling. Some took me ages to explore. Take the super addictive podcast of the now cult “Serial” for example… continue
