MoPub CEO Leaves Day-to-Day Operations, in Another Executive Shake-Up at Twitter

Yet another executive shuffle is underway at Twitter.

Fourteen months after Twitter acquired MoPub, its founder and CEO, Jim Payne, is leaving day-to-day operations for the mobile-ad exchange. Mr. Payne will serve as an ad-tech adviser to Twitter’s CFO, Anthony Noto.

A Twitter spokesman confirmed the changes. Mr. Payne’s transition was planned, and he will continue working daily at Twitter, strategically advising Mr. Noto on the ad-tech industry, the spokesman said. Yesterday, Mr. Noto publicly signaled Twitter’s intention to buy a company through a mistaken tweet.

Totino's Pizza Made 50 Ridiculous Ads Using the World's Worst Stock Photos

This week’s “Uh, what? No, seriously, what?” comes to us from those perpetuators of pizza propaganda, Totino’s Pizza. It was just a few weeks ago that Tim & Eric gave us probably the oddest pizza ad ever, and now Totino’s is back to inject more weird into the Internet.

Last spring, BuzzFeed posted a story showing “50 Completely Unexplainable Stock Photos No One Will Ever Use.” It was indeed a truly odd collection of head-scratching images. Well, Totino’s saw the list and accepted the challenge.

“We obviously had no choice but to use them. Poorly,” the brand explains.

Yes, Totino’s used all 50 photos to make weird little Totino’s ads. Check out the best of them below, and see the whole amazing lot over at the Totino’s website.

FDA's New Calorie Rules Are Broader Than Expected, Including Movie Theaters and Alcohol

You may not have wanted to know how many calories were in your tub of movie popcorn, and theater operators certainly didn’t want to tell you, but soon there’ll be no choice.

New FDA rules announced Tuesday that require restaurants, similar retail establishments, movie theaters, amusement parts and even vending machines nationwide to list calorie counts on menu boards.

The rules, covering establishments with 20 or more locations, are broader than the FDA initially proposed in some ways. Movie theaters, which have been increasingly offering restaurant-type food such as pizza and hot dogs, were not expected to be included after fierce industry opposition.

Midterms Aren't Over Yet: Data Could Be Election-Law Battleground

The voter database has become the latest battleground in politics, so it’s no surprise partisan legal armies are moving into this newly contested territory.

In what could be the first complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission involving tech-driven data coordination, the American Democracy Legal Fund alleged last month that the Republican National Committee, along with its top data partners, large right-wing Super PACs and a slew of GOP midterm candidate campaigns have been swapping voter information illegally.

The complaint from the Democratic political ethics watchdog group comes amid allegations of covert polling-data sharing via dark Twitter accounts last week.

Grey NY Introduces Yet Another Rob Lowe for DirecTV

Grey New York has introduced yet another Rob Lowe in its ongoing campaign for DirecTV.

Following on the heels of “Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe,” which apparently drew some criticism from shy bladder sufferers, the agency has returned with the self-explanatory “Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe.” The formula is the same as in previous spots, with Rob Lowe introducing himself as a DirecTV customer before a more unfortunate version of himself, who also happens to be a cable customer, comes along for comparison. In the new spot Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe watches ping-pong on a small screen and attempts to open a jar of mayonnaise. Like previous ads, it ends with Lowe saying “Don’t be like this me.”

While it may be that the series is running out of steam, “Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe” just seems like the weakest of the bunch so far. Whereas “Super Creepy Rob Lowe” and “Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe” found convincing ways of tying Lowe’s alter egos to the inferior quality of cable, “Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe” feels like an empty gimmick. Let’s hope Grey can up the ante with the inevitable follow-up and recapture the potential of this campaign. (more…)

mcgarrybowen Names First CCO

Mark KIn news we missed, mcgarrybowen followed the debut of its first work for new client Intel and staffing changes at its New York and San Francisco offices by announcing the appointment of its first CCO: New York MD/ECD Mark Koelfgen.

The agency did not send out a release, choosing instead to confirm Koelfgen’s promotion at its town hall event on Friday.

mcgarrybowen hired Koelfgen directly from GSD&M, where he served as ACD, in 2005; prior to joining GSD&M, he worked as an ACD at Deutsch New York after beginning his copywriting career at DDB/Tracy Locke in Dallas. mcgarrybowen hired Koelfgen as a creative director, and he worked on the Reebok and Brahma beer accounts before being promoted to the MD/ECD position in the agency’s New York office in 2009.

Koelfgen’s accomplishments during his tenure at mcgarrybowen include the successful launch of Verizon’s Droid brand, which led to the agency’s subsequent victory in the Verizon Mobile pitch (a pitch on which he was lead creative).

The agency says that they picked him after searching for candidates both internally and externally. As a member of the New York leadership team, the new CCO will work closely with mbNY President Tom Sewell and Global CSO Jennifer Zimmerman while reporting directly to co-founder Gordon Bowen (who currently oversees global creative strategy).

In addition to Verizon, Koelfgen’s portfolio includes work for Pepsi, AT&T, Microsoft, American Airlines, IKEA, Snapple and more.

It's Time for Media CMOs to Step Up and Lead

Imagine you’re a media company CMO and you have to figure out what to do in 2015. You’re probably like the 93% of executives of all industries Forrester surveyed early in 2014 who told us their industries would suffer digital disruption in the year. Now the year is over and you realize that by and large, you haven’t moved the ball as far as you would have hoped. You look around and see that digital disruptors like Uber and Square are transforming staid industries such as transportation and banking, and you realize that if those businesses are being disrupted, then the media biz is surely due for another round. Just like Spotify is disrupting iTunes, which disrupted Napster. That makes YouTube Music Key round four, depending on how you count.

How to prepare? You take an inventory of your resources. Your CEO is committed to leading in digital, but uncertain exactly what to commit to. In fact, in our surveys of all industries, just 39% of CEOs believe they own the company’s digital strategy. There is talk of hiring a chief digital officer, that heroic figure who comes in on a white horse to save the day, but you know it won’t save the day at all — it will only add to the fumbling over executive decision making.

Looking ahead to 2015, you see that your customers will embrace even more technologies, ranging from Apple Watch to Amazon Echo, which will create additional opportunities either to deliver new content experiences or fail to reach your customers on an even grander scale. And meanwhile, your marketing agencies and partners all claim they can build whatever app you need and design whatever new user experience your customer is ready for — a seductive promise that nearly absolves you of the need to make your own decisions.
