Time Warner Earnings Support Argument Its Better Off Without a Merger

Time Warner beat analysts’ profit estimates as fees received for its TV channels rose, lending support to Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bewkes’ argument that the company is better off without a merger.

Mr. Bewkes has said that his growth plan for an independent Time Warner will create more value than Rupert Murdoch’s $85-a-share buyout offer, which was rejected and then withdrawn in August. After years of spinning off assets to shrink Time Warner down to its cable networks, HBO and the WarnerBros. studio, Mr. Bewkes is now aggressively cutting costs and pushing the company’s content online.

“We’ve refocused the company over the past few years to aggressively pursue the huge global opportunities we see in video content,” Mr. Bewkes said today in a statement.

What Do Chief Executives and Accordion Players Have in Common

Hewlett-Packard plans to split in half, separating its PC and printer businesses from its hardware and services businesses. According to CEO Meg Whitman, the two companies would be “a lot more nimble, a lot more focused.”

This is not the first time Hewlett-Packard split in half. Fifteen years ago, the company spun off its test and measurement equipment in a company called “Agilent Technologies,” a name picked to connote “agility.”

What has H-P been doing since then?

Dish Sheds Light on How Advertising Will Live On Its OTT Service

Dish network is having some technical issues dynamically inserting ads into the linear networks from its partners for its upcoming digital TV service, Chairman Charlie Ergen said on the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday.

The snag, however, isn’t expected to delay the launch of the service, which is still expected to roll out by the end of the year.

“To be able to insert dynamic ads is a fairly complex project even though we’ve been working for it for a long time,” Mr. Ergen said on the call. “We’re now actually doing it, and when you start doing it, it’s not theory anymore, it’s actual practicality and so we are running into a few snags there, but we still plan to meet … our self-imposed year-end deadline. But whatever we do, we’re going to do it right.”

Brilliant YouTube Banner Ads in Peru Cover Subtitles to Promote English Lessons

Learning a new language is never easy, and for many Peruvians, it’s a lot easier to just read the Spanish subtitles on their favorite U.S. movie trailers.

Armed with that insight, language school Euroidiomas has been trolling these viewers with clever YouTube banner ads that covered subtitles on movie promos and urged them to sign up for English classes.

“The action’s up there, not down here,” notes one ad.

“Go to watch movies, not to read them,” says another.

Clever as they may be, it’s unlikely they worked very well if (as in the case study below) the ads were written in English. We’re going to guess the real ads were in Spanish and that this version was just created for us English speakers to appreciate the campaign.

Now, if we’re done, I’d like to get back to this Tortugas Ninjas trailer.

Nest Borrows From Phone Companies' Model to Find New Customers

Nest said Wednesday it has struck a deal providing new customers of the Electric Ireland power company with free smart thermostats and installation. Nest CEO Tony Fadell said he hopes that deal will be just the first in a series of arrangements akin to the free or discounted phones available when consumers sign up for a new wireless plan.

Nest, which Google bought early this year for $3.2 billion, is in the vanguard of the so-called internet of things, a near-future vision in which home heating systems will automatically warm the house before consumers get home from work and refrigerators will order more juice when shelves are looking bare.

But Nest also needs to capitalize on its position before competitors catch up. Already utilities such as Con Ed offer their own versions. Part of Nest’s growth plans will depend on deals like the Electric Ireland partnership, which Mr. Fadell announced at the Web Summit in Dublin, a meeting of digital power brokers, entrepreneurs, startups and developers.

Steve Jobs Was Thinking About a Phone in 1984

Steve Jobs was the classic troublesome visionary, former Apple CEO John Sculley said on Tuesday at the Web Summit conference in Dublin. “Even back in 1984, he was working on the idea of a phone,” Mr. Sculley said, citing that an example of Mr. Jobs’ genius.

He was thinking 20 years ahead of everyone else — but that also proved problematic, according to Mr. Sculley. Amid Mr. Jobs’ many concrete accomplishments, fueled by visions far ahead of modern technology, he often focused on innovations that weren’t yet within the realm of possibility. Clashes with the Apple board along those lines led to Mr. Jobs’ eventual exit from Apple. “Steve Jobs never forgave me,” Mr. Sculley said.

Mr. Jobs’ return and subsequent success with innovations no less than the iPhone redeemed his reputation and then some. Today Apple still retains some of its perception as an underdog when it’s really an unequivocal world-class giant, New York Times media columnist David Carr pointed out during his talk with Mr. Sculley. “That’s a pretty good campaign you’ve run,” Mr. Carr said.

Was 'Squeal' the Political Ad of the Year?

Way back in May, I wrote about the “Squeal” ad from Republican Senate hopeful Joni Ernst. At the time, it had already been on the national media’s radar for a couple of months and for obvious reasons.

It opens thusly: “I’m Joni Ernst. I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm, so when I get to Washington, I’ll know how to cut pork.”

Quite the first impression. The last line, delivered after some visuals of smiling Joni intercut with some piglets: “Let’s make them squeal.”

Campanha propõe “vacina” para internautas hipocondríacos

saude
