TBWA Celebrates a Day of Sun for Jimmy Dean

TBWA/Chiat Day, LA has a new series of online spots in their ongoing campaign promoting Jimmy Dean’s new lunch and dinner offerings.

Some wondered, when Jimmy Dean announced the move into the instant lunch/dinner market, whether the brand would retain its recognizable sun character due to its association with the morning. But the brand is leaning on its mascot as much as ever, explaining its continued presence with a new series of online spots tracking him on characters across the country and throughout the day.

In “Slow Roast Shuffle” (featured above), he’s dancing up a storm while promoting Jimmy Dean Pulled Pork. Things get over-the-top pretty quickly and his dance partner can’t exactly keep up, as TBWA/Chiat Day stretch the character into some cartoonish territory. Other spots are slightly more down-to-earth, with the sun dropping change into parking meters, giving out free lunch at baggage claim in an airport and riding off into the sunset. All the videos are hosted on a website where you can also track the sun’s progress on the “Sunniest Day,” which Jimmy Dean says was yesterday.

Despite TBWA’s best efforts, the character, so long associated with breakfast, seems a little out of place in these scenarios (and past the AM). With time we’ll see if these are just growing pains or if the character continues to feel awkward promoting meals past breakfast. (more…)

Google's Street-View Tour of the Pyramids Goes Viral

One week after debuting at number 10, Google’s “Explore the Pyramids” spot has risen to the top of the Visible Measures viral video chart. The video shot up on the strength of 6.3 million views, effectively doubling its total view count in the space of one week.

Nestle’s “Bra Cam” spot, a Creativity Pick that focuses on Breast Cancer Awareness, apparently turned a lot of heads. It racked up 6.2 million views this past week, good to enter the chart at No. 2, based on views in the week ending Sunday.

Credit card companies Visa and American Express both made an appearance on Viral Video Chart with very different videos. Visa’s “Visa Checkout” ad highlights the features of its Visa Checkout system, while Amex’s latest spot features Tina Fey buying a range of items with an American Express Rewards card.

Facebook’s mobile ad network is officially open for business.

Five months after the social network formally launched its Audience Network with a small set of app publishers and advertisers, Facebook is opening up the mobile ad network to any media buyer and seller. The company is also adding a new ad unit for marketers to drive traffic to their mobile sites.

A Facebook spokesman declined to say how many publishers are in the network or what the revenue split is with participating publishers but said the company has paid out millions of dollars to however many apps are participating. The first crop of publishers to sell ads through Facebook’s mobile ad network include Shazam, Zynga, IGN, Le Monde, Merriam-Webster, MyFitnessPal, Glu Mobile, Wooga, Deezer and Vinted.

Epic is On antecipa emoções dos Jogos de Toronto

Criado pela FCB de Toronto, as belíssimas paisagens da cidade e redondezas se misturam a atletas e paratletas poderosos, tudo ao som de Ready or Not, cover de Mischa ‘Book’ Chillak e Esthero para a canção Ready of Not Here I Come (Can’t Hide From Love), dos Delphonics.

Marketers: Bicultural Hispanics Need to be Heard, So Give Them a Voice

I recently had a brief telephone conversation with my mother, and was reminded just how dissimilar we are from each other. She is foreign-born, Cuban by birth, and came to this country as an adult. I was born in the U.S. Most marketers would paint us both as “Hispanic” and think their job is done.

But it’s more complicated than that. Marketers need to understand the dynamics at play with bicultural audiences, and how communications can be interpreted differently in Hispanic vs. U.S. “general market” cultures.

When I have phone conversations with my mother, if there’s a three-second pause after she begins a sentence, and I haven’t verbally confirmed her speaking, she’ll ask me, “Are you there? Did the phone die?” I don’t know if this occurs because we aren’t in the same room and she can’t read my non-verbal, active listening cues, or if it’s simply because of her collectivist roots, and her belief that conversations shouldn’t be as much sequential as concurrent. Regardless of the cause, the result is the same: I leave the conversation many times feeling like I haven’t been heard, or having to do a lot of work to be heard.

Jack Davison Photography

Turner to Cut 10% of Jobs to Boost Profit, Fund Programming

Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting division will eliminate 1,475 positions, about 10% of its global workforce, as part of a broader initiative to improve profitability.

The cuts will take place at 18 locations worldwide, and include news, entertainment and sports, as well as corporate jobs, the company said yesterday in a statement. Turner, which operates CNN, TNT and TBS, has about 14,000 full-time employees, according to the statement.

Time Warner, based in New York, is under pressure to improve its performance after CEO Jeff Bewkes spurned a $75 billion buyout offer from Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox and said his company would deliver better returns to investors on its own. Eliminating salaries will free up cash for new investments, such as in live sports.
