M:United Mocks Siri, Apple for HTC One

Happy Monday! Since today is unofficially Apple Week, here’s yet another brand trying to co-opt a bit of that company’s publicity.

M: United has a new campaign for the HTC One in which the agency once again takes on Apple.

Following on the heels of its August campaign promoting the Surface Pro 3 comes a spot in which the agency takes aim at Apple’s Siri, or “Robot Scarlett Johansson.”

The spot opens with Siri looking into a mirror and repeating that classic line “I feel pretty, oh so pretty” before engaging in a conversation with HTC One’s Cortana. Obviously, the conversation is intended to make Siri look silly by comparison, both via Cortana’s less computerized-sounding voice and the HTC One’s fancy features (including not one but two speakers).

This spot works better than most in its surprisingly large family, but how many more Apple-bashing ads can viewers stomach? (more…)

DirecTV Kicked Off the NFL Season With an Ad Featuring a Gay Couple

A same-sex couple locked in an embrace (or is it a tackle?) smash through their home in slow-motion in a surprisingly inclusive spot for DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket.

These guys have a “friendly rivalry.” One roots for the New York Giants, and the other for the Dallas Cowboys. At first, viewers might think it’s just a moment of roughhousing between friends, but they eventually make it clear by saying that, while they may argue sometimes, “we’re just like any couple.”

Despite the nod to the Cowboys, the ad from Grey New York was almost certainly filmed before the team signed Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted into the National Football League. The spot broke last Thursday during the NFL’s first regular-season game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.

Sports has factored into several pro-LGBT ads lately. To protest Russia’s anti-gay laws ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, a Canadian equal rights group created a PSA that claimed, “The games have always been a little gay,” a reference to the visual association one might make concerning the two-man luge. While applauding the spot’s good intentions, some felt the humor reinforced stereotypes. Norwegian apparel firm XXL took a different tack with its mini-epic Olympic commercial with a lesbian twist .

Some commenters have disparaged the “little yippity dog” in the DirecTV spot as a homosexual cliche, but it otherwise has received a pretty warm response from LGBT advocates. The ad scores because it levels the playing field and presents its themes in the same loud, goofy and accessible style as the client’s other “Most Powerful Fan” commercials. Here, sports fandom becomes a fun, credible metaphor for inclusiveness. DirecTV called the right play.

iWatch? iPhone 6?

iphone-new-old

Twitter Slowly Wades Into E-Commerce With 'Buy Now' Button

Twitter is now a shopping platform. On Monday, the social media company introduced its Buy Now button, a feature that allows users to make purchases directly on Twitter.com and through its mobile-app.

“You’re going to see native ad units become transactional,” said Nathan Hubbard, head of commerce at Twitter. “We’ve put a stake in the ground at the leading edge of this.”

Yet Twitter is moving cautiously with the product, which it says will only operate in the U.S. and be seen by a “small percentage” of users. Just twenty-six nonprofits and musical artists were handpicked to deploy the feature, including country star Brad Paisley, the rappers Eminem and Wiz Khalifa, and the death metal band Megadeth.

All About Alibaba: What Brands Need To Know

It’s no exaggeration to say Alibaba has revolutionized the lives of China’s consumers. Offering one-stop shopping for everything from toothpaste to cars, it’s responsible for 80% of China’s e-commerce market, which is already or soon to be the world’s biggest. In the second quarter of 2014, Alibaba sold more than Amazon and eBay combined.

In cities across China, deliverymen with scooters piled high with Alibaba parcels dart through the streets. A consumer in far-flung western China — someone who has maybe never owned a computer or browsed in an Old Navy, Burberry or Apple store can use a smartphone to discover those brands and buy them. (All three brands opened storefronts on Alibaba’s virtual mall, Tmall, this year.)

Alibaba’s initial public offering might be the biggest ever in the U.S., possibly raising more than $21 billion. (The company’s roadshow for investors kicks off this week, while shares are expected to start trading next week on the New York Stock Exchange).

Summary: Do you feel stressed and overloaded? If so, then you may need to brush up your delegation skills!

If you work entirely on your own, there’s a limited amount that you can do, however hard you work; and if you’re good at your job, people will want much more from you. This can lead to a real sense of pressure and work overload, leaving you stressed, unhappy, and with the feeling you’re letting people down.

Get Ready for the Holiday Smartphone Marketing Race

On a recent weekday morning, LG Electronics took over a top-floor Manhattan suite overlooking the Hudson River. Each room was adorned carefully with a cadre of new devices: smartphones, tablets, headphones and smartwatches. Despite what the expansive view might suggest, LG was aiming for an intimate vibe.

It was certainly low-key: The hotel lobby staff had to call to determine which room LG had rented.

It was a stark contrast to the opulence on display last Wednesday morning, when Samsung, the other Korean electronics giant, seized entire venues in Berlin, Beijing and New York for its latest product launch. And the LG showroom pales next to the event planned for Tuesday, when Apple is expected to unmask its newest iPhone in a stadium that seats more than 2,300 people.
