RIP Jim Mullen, Founder of UNC’s Advertising Program (1922-2014)

If you live outside of Tarheel Country, this news may not stop you, but it should. Jim Mullen, who founded the University of North Carolina’s advertising program, died this week at Carolina Meadows Retirement Community, where he lived with his wife, Dorothy.

I didn’t attend UNC, but I heard about Mullen’s legacy through a friend of mine who has a tattoo of tar on his heel (yes, really). That friend, who is something of a bigwig in the advertising world, had to fight back the sadness as he told me. That is the kind of impression that everyone in advertising wants to make on clients, colleagues and people.

While you may not have heard of Mullen personally, he is widely credited with helping the school earn its current prominence in the ad world.

“Jim was an original in so many ways. He was smart, opinionated, witty and wide open to new approaches and potential faculty members with unusual qualifications,” said John Sweeney, a professor of advertising in the school. “He started the advertising specialization here in the days of ‘Mad Men’ yet was never bound to the restrictions or assumptions of that era. His mind was too quick and sharp to be locked into anyone else’s worldview.”

He held bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota as well as a master’s degree from Harvard University. He was also was a World War II veteran. Mullen was 91.

Children Tell Parents to 'Lock It Up' in Merkley's Gun Safety Ads

Merkley + Partners takes the kids’ side in its new campaign for gun safety, with boys and girls questioning why adults don’t go to greater lengths to hide their firearms.

In one TV ad, “Please Add This to the List,” a string of children note that their parents tell them to always wear seatbelt and bike helmets yet store their guns loosely in a drawer, closet, garage or under a bed. Another TV execution, “Do It for Us,” weaves adults into picture, with a mother cradling a baby and a female teacher in a classroom saying that if guns are stored properly, “I won’t have to tell my kids, ‘This isn’t a drill.’ “

Documentary filmmaker Henry Corra directed the ads, which were shot in black and white, and actor Richard Thomas provided the voiceover. The campaign, which also includes print, outdoor, radio and online ads, was created for the National Crime Prevention Council (via the Ad Council) and funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The tagline is, “Lock it up.”

'First Kiss' Spoofs Continue With 'The Slap,' Which Is Exactly What It Sounds Like

If you’ve ever wanted to see Haley Joel Osment from The Sixth Sense get slapped around, well, this is your chance.

Yes, it’s three months later and we’re still seeing parodies of Wren’s “First Kiss,” the super-viral ad (and now Cannes gold Lion winner) that showed complete strangers kissing each other. For this one, Max Landis (son of Hollywood legend John Landis) gathered 40 friends and acquaintances and had them slap each other (allegedly for the first time).

The video already has over 2 million views. Check it out below, and take note of just how different the slaps are: Some are super hard, some are soft, but everyone seems excited about the violence they’re allowed to exact on someone else. Yikes!

WPP CEO Handily Survives Vote on $50 Million Pay Package

WPP CEO Martin Sorrell handily survived another shareholder vote on his $50 million pay package at the communications group’s annual general meeting in London today, where 16% of votes opposed his package and another 11% abstained.

Efforts to reduce Mr. Sorrell’s pay seem to be receding into the past. The vote was similar to last year. The CEO also again won a resounding personal vote of confidence with 99.81% re-electing him as a director of the company, roughly even with last year, when the proportion was 99.98%. The CEO role is not up for a vote.

Jeffrey Rosen, attending his last annual meeting as chairman of WPP’s compensation committee, defended the package, arguing that the scheme was approved five years ago and it would not be fair or even legal to withdraw it at the last minute.
