In data circles, it’s referred to simply as “the Octopus case.” And it’s at the center of why data-protection laws in Asia are getting so tough, so fast.
Consumers in Hong Kong use a payment method called an Octopus card to buy everything from public-transport tickets to fast food. Like the eight-armed sea creature, the cards have reach.
But in 2010, Octopus Holdings acknowledged making millions of dollars by selling off cardholders’ personal data — without their permission — to companies including insurance firms.
Here’s one way to get drinkers to engage with beer brands online: Extend happy hour.
That is the premise of a new digital program that Carlsberg Group is testing at bars in its home country of Denmark. The initiative encourages bar-goers to upload photos to Instagram, tagging them “#HappyBeerTime” and the name of the bar where they are drinking. The pictures then appear on a TV screen at the bar, with each photo adding a few more minutes to happy hour.
Participating bars must connect a special HDMI stick to an HDTV to make it all work. The payoff for the bar is that their name is shared across Instagram. Carlsberg presumably gets a bunch of people posting pictures of themselves drinking the brewer’s brands, which include its namesake brew, as well as Tuborg, Kronenbourg and others.
Morrisons has been told by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) not to target its alcohol advertising at videos of nursery rhymes shown on YouTube.

When Weber Shandwick learned late last year that Interpublic Group of Cos.’ sibling Mediabrands had constructed a system that allowed other shops in the holding company to access its tools and data, the PR giant wanted in.
Now Weber Shandwick can access data down to ZIP codes and geography, and is using Mediabrands’ data to identify and target audiences, as well as study how exposure to earned and social-content prompts behavior like buying habits.
Like Interpublic, most holding companies began centralizing their disparate data resources last year so their agencies could access behavioral data for a small fee. This year, those systems are live, and PR agencies — arguably the most data-deprived of the bunch — are diving in.
