Mike’s Hard Has a New Strategy, and It’s All Digital

Since launching 15 years ago today, Mike’s Hard Lemonade has survived through booms and busts in the flavored-malt-beverage category, fending off competition from the likes of Diageo and Anheuser-Busch. But as the category enters another boom phase, Mike’s might be in for its biggest challenge yet.

So-called FMBs are growing again at impressive rates thanks to demand from flavor-seeking millennial drinkers. That means Mike’s must fight harder to keep — and grow — its share as big brewers again flood the market with fruity and tangy brands, including A-B InBev’s rapidly expanding Bud Light Lime margarita-inspired franchise.

As it responds, Mike’s is making significant changes, including moving off TV to an all-digital approach. That is a notable change for a marketer that in 2012 and 2013 spent a combined $18.9 million on TV ads, according to Kantar Media. Digital offers an ability to “reach consumers more frequently through more targeted messaging and at different moments of truth for them,” said Sanjiv Gajiwala, Mike’s director of marketing activation.

Captivate Buys The Wall Street Journal Office Network

One company will soon own nearly all of the video screens you see every day in many office elevators and lobbies.

Captivate Network, which already owns the bulk of those business screens in elevators, is buying the company that owns most of the screens in lobbies, Office Media Network, operator of The Wall Street Journal Office Network, in a cash and stock deal, the companies said Tuesday. They declined to disclose terms of the deal.

The Wall Street Journal Office Network, the result of a licensing deal between Office Media Network and Journal parent Dow Jones, debuted in building lobbies in 2006 and expanded to elevators a year later. But it always trailed Captivate in terms of the number of people it could reach.

Viewability is No Guarantee of Being Seen

On Monday, the Media Rating Council lifted its advisory against using viewable impressions as a digital advertising currency metric. For the full background and explanation, see Ad Age’s report, “MRC Tells Ad Industry It’s Okay To Use Viewable Impressions.”

But what does it really mean, in practical terms, for the digital advertising community to begin transacting on viewable impressions?

For brands and agencies, it represents renewed assurance they’ll get the impressions they paid for — a reasonable expectation to be sure. For publishers and networks, it means a period of adjustment that may be painful for those who are unprepared.

Is That a Discount Coupon on Your Wrist?

Here’s a not-too-distant future Eric Franchi imagines: You order a movie ticket on your phone, then decide to stop at a convenience store to buy snacks. As you stand in the aisle, your wrist vibrates. The company whose candy you were eyeing has sent you a discount.

Mr. Franchi is co-founder of Undertone, a digital ad network based in New York, and one of an ambitious few in adland testing “wearable” products. In three years, he believes, smartwatches will be pervasive — and a booming business for advertisers.

At the Mobile World Conference in February, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer Samsung unveiled two sleek products in the second generation of its watches with internet capabilities. The Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo will land on the market April 8. LG and Motorola have unmasked their own devices. Qualcomm also has its own. So do a gamut of companies, from hardware veterans Sony and Intel to Pebble Technology, a small, scrappy company financed by the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. (And then there’s China, where one analyst said “hundreds” of manufacturers are in the mix.)
