R/GA Chicago Hires New ECD
Posted in: UncategorizedR/GA, the self-described “world’s most award-winning digital agency”, announced the hiring of a new creative co-lead for its Chicago office.
MDavid Low arrives from San Francisco tech/design consultancy Nurun (formerly Odopod), where he served as associate technical director; he will work closely with VP and executive director of copywriting Ken Erke and report to VP/MD Jeff Brecker.
Prior to working with Nurun, Low was chief creative technologist at Eleven, Inc., where he helped create Skippy the rock-skipping robot for client Sun Valley.
Brecker describes Low, who has worked with rock bands in addition to brands and counts motorcycle repair among his hobbies, as:
“…both a thinker and a maker – someone who doesn’t just understand design needs, but also the technology and production levers to develop and implement solutions for our clients.”
Before you ask: yes, that is his real name.

Hot Seat: GM’s Mary Barra Grilled by Congress Over Recall
Posted in: UncategorizedUnlike the CEO’s of the Big Three automakers who flew corporate jets to Washington before begging for taxpayer billions, General Motors CEO Mary Barra was smart enough to fly commercial when she took the Congressional hot seat Tuesday.
From a crisis PR standpoint, Ms. Barra did the right things Tuesday. Seated alone at a table with no lawyers whispering in her ear, she apologized over the “tragic” situation, gave short direct answers when she could and pledged the “new” GM would do the right thing in the future.
She met briefly with grieving families of the victims, who filled up several rows at the hearing. She announced GM had hired noted attorney Kenneth Feinberg (who handled the fund for victims of the 9/11 terror attacks and Boston Marathon Bombing), to decide how to compensate owners and families.
Walmart’s New Cost-Cutting Target: The Ad World
Posted in: UncategorizedHaving driven cost out of distributing goods for decades, Walmart has a newer vision: Driving waste out of advertising and media. And not just for itself. As Brian Monahan, VP-marketing of Walmart.com said in a talk at the Ad Age Digital Conference on Tuesday, the retailer hopes to do the same for its suppliers, too.
Mr. Monahan, who came to the top marketing post at Walmart’s San Bruno, Calif.-based online retail operation last year from Interpublic’s Magna Global, made clear one of the advantages of Walmart bringing in a career media executive with a technological bent. He knows about software, having among other things helped set up Interpublic’s agency trading desk for programmatic buying of digital media.
“Media planning today is beyond human comprehension,” Mr. Monahan said. “There are so many choices on where you can put your precious investment. It’s a software problem.”
Canavari Leaving McGarryBowen
Posted in: UncategorizedWe’ve received confirmation that after spending the last three years as executive managing director at McGarryBowen’s New York office, working primarily on JPMorgan Chase, Susan Canavari is leaving said agency to work for said client. Still confirming approximate position (something in the realm of brand building officer) with the aforementioned financial institution, but we’ve been told that a transition process is underway at McGarryBowen, which cannot yet name Canavari’s replacement.
Prior to joining McGarryBowen, Canavari, you may recall, spent four years at DigitasLBi, where she last served as EVP/marketing on all non-American Express accounts and led the latter agency’s Kraft Foods One team.

Razorfish Responds to Layoff Rumors
Posted in: UncategorizedHere’s Razorfish’s response to rumors that 20-30 employees were laid off last week:
“In order to ensure our clients continue to access best-in-breed services that operate at the intersection of technology, media and creative, we sometimes need to modify our staffing structure. Less than 2% of our North American staff was affected by the change. We continue to remain committed to recruiting new talent and skill sets in support of our clients’ ever-evolving needs.”
