King Succeeds Buchner as Fallon CMO

It took a couple of months, but Fallon has found a new chief marketing officer from within, appointing 16-year vet John King to the position. King (pictured) takes over for Rob Buchner, a 25-year Fallon vet who if you recall left the agency in June to assume the role of CEO at fellow Twin Cities op, Campbell Mithun. As for the new CMO, King spent the last five years serving as chief communications officer at Fallon, working with a client roster that includes General Mills and NBCU.

Along with the CMO appointment, Fallon has also brought on Charles Wolford, formerly of Modernista! and 72andSunny, as chief production officer. Additionally, Rocky Novak has shifted from director of digital development to managing director and Julie McBride from director of talent to a larger role as director of talent and communications.

Facebook Pushes Back Video Ad Launch Again Amid User Experience Concerns

Brands hoping to test Facebook’s long-awaited video ads will have to wait a while longer. Facebook has pushed back its intended October unveiling, and hasn’t provided a new launch timeframe, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.

Facebook has been pitching brands and agencies on video ads for more than a year. The pricey, 15-second spots will be targeted at demographic segments of Facebook’s userbase (not unlike TV) and Facebook is seeking anywhere from $1 million to roughly $2.4 million depending on the reach involved for a daily slot. They first were slated to be unveiled in the first half of this year, then were being teed up for a summer debut, and most recently pushed back to October.

Sprite Parts Ways With Leo Burnett, Taps Translation for New Campaign

Less than 18 months ago Coca-Cola entrusted Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett with creative duties for its Sprite brand — and the launch of a major North American ad campaign — but now the marketer has changed agency partners again.

In Leo Burnett’s place, independent shop Translation Advertising has been tapped to handle marketing for the lemon-lime soda, executives familiar with the matter say.

Both agencies declined to comment, but a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola acknowledged the break with Leo Burnett and the relationship with Translation. She also noted that WPP-backed Johannes Leonardo continues to handle global work. “Sprite has worked with Translation across multiple campaigns for a number of years now,” said Kerry Tressler, a Coca-Cola spokeswoman. “I can confirm that they are currently on point for some new work, but don’t have any details I can share at this point. …We do not have any current projects with Leo Burnett.”

Politicos Seek Data Clues for 2016 from Virginia Election

Outside of some local races, it may seem like little is happening on the political campaign landscape. Yet across the country and more so across the beltway, politicos are eyeing the Virginia race for governor. The reason: to find out whether the data-centric approach that helped President Obama’s campaign in 2012 can work for smaller election campaigns.

Not only is Virginia in the backyard of Washington, D.C., where campaign operatives swarm, it is a key presidential election swing state. And it just so happens that its gubernatorial election, between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli, is shaping up to be a close one.

A recent RealClearPolitics poll average showed Mr. McAuliffe ahead by 3.5 points. So, the election could help parties, advocacy groups and future campaigns envision what the 2016 presidential race might look like on a statewide level. President Obama won Virginia in 2012 by a margin of around three points.

Keebler’s Elves Are Building ‘Tiny Doors’ Across America

Leo Burnett is proving that marketing ideas really do grow on trees — actually under one particular tree in San Francisco, to be exact.

The tree, in the city’s Golden Gate Park, began drawing national media attention a few months ago when a mysterious small door was discovered at its base. Leo Burnett’s Kellogg team caught the story on the news and immediately made a connection. “Everyone knows that Keebler elves make cookies in the Hollow Tree,” recalled Mike Doyle, a VP-Creative Director at the agency. “If there was ever a project that we should be doing something around, it seemed like this would be the one.”

Thus was born the “Tiny Doors Project,” in which Kellogg’s Keebler brand commissions artists to build tiny doors at the base of trees across the country.
