Study Slams Industry Self-Regulation and Kids’ Marketing


A new study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation charges that fast-food companies have not adhered to the food industry’s self-regulation guidelines when it comes to marketing to kids.

The study, released Wednesday and dubbed “How Television Fast-Food Marketing Aimed at Children Compares with Adult Advertisements,” said that fast-food companies tend to emphasize toy giveaways and movie tie-ins when marketing to kids on TV rather than focus on the food — a practice that the study’s authors said go against industry self-regulation guidelines set by the Children’s Advertising Review Unit.

“Fast-food companies use free toys and popular movies to appeal to kids, and their ads are much more focused on promotions, brands, and logosnot on the food,” said James Sargent, professor of pediatrics at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and lead author of the study, in a statement. “These are techniques that the companies’ own self-regulatory body calls potentially misleading.”

Twitter Buys Trendrr to Track Social Conversations Across Media


In an effort to make it easier for networks and publishers to display tweets in their programming, Twitter has bought the social-TV startup Trendrr for an undisclosed sum.

It’s the second major acquisition Twitter has made this year of an ecosystem company that conducted measurement and analytics on behalf of networks and brands around social conversations linked to TV. It reportedly paid $90 million for a former Trendrr competitor, Bluefin Labs, which was acquired in February.

O diretor James Houston ficou conhecido quando lançou o projeto “Big Ideas (don’t get any), uma performance sua tocando “Nude”, de Radiohead, usando impressoras de rolo, máquinas de escrever, rádios antigos, entre outros tesouros.

Sem negar que os objetos tecnológicos se tornaram cada vez mais descartáveis, isso não se explica somente pela obsolescência precoce de tanto avanço, mas sobretudo porque não há quem herde o sentido emocional que eles um dia materializaram.

Em “Polybius”, Houston faz da música um exercício de coleta de histórias e épocas, construindo uma melodia que funciona como colcha de retalhos do tempo e suas mudanças.
