The New Internal Human Resources Rules For WPP

carbonite.jpg

In an e-mail to senior staff seen by Brand Republic, it was made clear that clients of WPP are holding back on their spend, which, of course, means WPP has to react. What will this reaction look like?

1. Marty Sorrell “has ordered that any job offers made but not accepted must be withdrawn immediately.” WPP is now in a hiring freeze. Brr…

2. Headhunters are no longer in play, and freelancers are being reigned in.

3. Any firm under the WPP caught poaching staff, will be severely reprimanded.

The email goes onto say that “Preliminary results for September show another month in which even our recently prepared forecasts for revenues have not been achieved.” And there goes WPP’s stock price. Tribble is predicating “…pink slips for Christmas… mark our words…”

Hmm… Maybe George Parker might actually be able to pull of his hostile takeover.

Cost Cutting Alert: Universal McCann No Longer Has Nortel In Its Grasp

nortel.jpg
Universal McCann has lost their duties on Nortel, which they’ve held since 2006. U.S. ad spending on the brand is estimated at $10-15M.

A Nortel rep told AgencySpy that: “McCann and Nortel have been successful partners for over two years now, and we continue to work with McCann as we evaluate the right go-forward model for Nortel’s marketing programs in the current business environment.”

Our spies tell us that this really means that McCann will get some projects, here, there and along with a host of other brands in cost cutting measure. Looks like everyone is tightening up the belt.

ASX Digital Media Watch 5

NoMoney_fs.jpg

Has it been 3 months since we last checked in on listed digital stocks? I think it has.

Let’s take a look at where the Australian stocks were in July 5th, 2008.

SGN: STW COMMUNICATIONS: $1.47
HYO: Hyro: $0.046
BLU: Blue Freeway: $0.069
CQU: Commquest: $0.175
QXQ: Q Limited: $0.015
MCU: Mitchell Communication Group: $0.55

Let’s see where everyone is now. While recession talks are escalating digital is seen as the one area which wont be hit as hard. But the stink of recession has eroded confidence in everyone.

As of October 17, 2008

SGN: STW COMMUNICATIONS: $0.89 ($0.58)
HYO: Hyro: $0.022 ($0.024)
BLU: Blue Freeway: $0.060 ($0.009)
CQU: Commquest: $0.090 ($0.085)
QXQ: Q Limited: $0.009 ($0.006)
MCU: Mitchell Communication Group: $0.425 ($0.125)

Ouch another tough few months and it wont get better quickly. I’m no expert but when your share price isn’t even 1c you have to wonder how it can be valued?

What I do find funny as that prices slump while charts like the one below are shown to try and boost investors confidence. These type of graphs are pure fluff. What this doesn’t show if that the money isn’t going to them. It’s going elsewhere.

adspend_up.jpg

If companies get as creative with actual client briefs as they do with their accounts and investor relations then they might see a turn around. However I know when I have someone else money I treat it differently too.

Full Disclosure: I am not a registered anything to do with the financial system. I also run an independent digital agency and It’s in my morbid interest to follow and kick these listed entities. I also previously worked at Hyro and was stiffed a large sum of money when they initially went into receivership back in 2000/2001. I also personally dislike the name Commquest purly on the fact it sounds lame.

“I don’t punch I glass” T-Shirts

glassing_news.jpg

This top story on News.com.au shows how bad SEO for some places are and how lazy web journalism of the mainstream media is. I can’t for the life of me find where this T-shirt is being sold?

Also I feel like it’s the newspapers job to properly link their articles. Why mention the shirt but not provide me with a link to check it out and maybe complain if I was so inclined? It’s just old school web journalism. Blogs have taken over as a good place to get news as they link their articles (maybe too much sometimes).

The article doesn’t even cross link with other more high profile gassings like Wayne Carey. I’m lead down an article one way street. No related article links, nothing. Then a filtered comment section which provides a very slow dialogue.

Pretty much anything news worthy these days would have a related story or something worth linking up. Wikipedia links are the best example. Provide a way for your readers to get more info. It’s not like they wont come back. That is unless they find a better site.

I’d like to see the news sites put more effort into their actual content and less into their sales strategies and ad serving technologies.

While I’m at it telling people what they can do better I can always spend more time proofing my posts for errors or grammar.

Think Globally, Serve Ads Locally

Max Kalehoff, vice president of marketing for Clickable and author of Attention Max, has some interesting things to say about small business and local online ad markets.

“Small to medium” is actually huge.

For example, I became acutely aware that half of the online advertising market is comprised of small and midsized businesses. The advertising trade press tends to cover the mega brands most — the head of the tail, not the torso nor the long tail. However, digital innovations are having just as profound an impact on the lower to mid foundation. It’s exciting and there’s incredible disruption and innovation going on.

I’ve also become more aware of the great significance of local online advertising. It’s complex, but a sizable and growing opportunity. When you work in the big-brand world of national advertising, it’s easy to forget that a lot of business-customer interaction happens in person, in your own neighborhood. Digital is steadily transforming the way businesses think about local.

I’m intrigued by this last bit. It seems like there are several ad networks and content aggregators dedicated to big topics like investing, for instance. But I’m not sure the same can be said for metropolitan markets.

Can you think of a firm who is servicing local markets by bundling online ad buys on local publishers’ sites? It seems like a service that would benefit national brands looking to advertise locally and local retailers and service providers looking to get the word out.

[UPDATE] outside.in looks to be doing a nice job of bundling local content.

MasterCard traces a hockey legend’s scars

Orr

I usually hate commercials that use tough-guy sports metaphors. But this MasterCard spot by MacLaren McCann in Toronto “cuts” through the clutter in the most literal sense of the word because of its focus on the pain, sacrifice and humanity behind every true sports icon. A hockey legend’s many surgical scars from his playing days trace a humbling “timeline” across his skin. At the end, the player simply sits in the locker room alone, a poignant image of a man who earned his accolades by paying the painful price many times and always skating back onto the ice for more. It’s Bobby Orr, but he’s never ID’d, implying that his hard-earned achievements outlive the fleeting fame. Besides, in Canada, they’ll know who he is.

MacLaren McCann, Toronto, Does MasterCard

“Timeline”, by Toronto based MacLaren McCann, chronicles the career of hockey player Bobby Orr via his injuries. His many, many really painful looking injuries.

Um, did he pay for all those surgeries with MasterCard? OK, I’ll lay off the ad in the “does it make sense” category. Nonetheless, it’s impossible to watch this spot and not feel something. Not an easy task given the long line of, “Priceless” ads that have preceded this latest iteration.

Credits after the jump.

Advertising Age Follows My Lead

I said it back in February:

Putting policies and positions aside for this discussion, Barack Obama has created the most sophisticated marketing program I’ve ever seen.

Now, 8 months later, Barack Obama has won Ad Age’s Marketer of The Year.

You want progress? If I do say so myself, I think the writing David & I do on AdPulp is more progressive than anything you’ll find in Ad Age.
