Sheppard Mullin is a Lost Member of Kiss!

Making a name for yourself in the legal world must be tough without OJ Simpson or sex tape spawn. What’s the average divorce attorney to do?

Finally, a logo that’s happy to see you

Ogclogo
It’s not often that a logo this stolid and minimal inspires schoolboy chuckles, so you have to feel for the U.K.’s Office of Government Commerce. Tilt your head 90 degrees to the left to see why (or just click here). The recently redesigned mark seemed to be going smoothly until it was shown to the OGC staff, which is obviously filled with perverts. Surprisingly, an OGC spokesman responded with both sound logic and good humor when asked about the logo, telling The Register: “It is true that it caused a few titters among some staff when viewed on its side, but on consideration we concluded that the effect was generic to the particular combination of the letters ‘OGC’ and is not inappropriate to an organization that’s looking to have a firm grip on government spend.” Via YesButNoButYes.

Kraft’s ‘The Ditcher’ has familiar ring to it

Ditcher_3
Like nearly all companies, Kraft wants to connect with the kids outside of TV. For its DiGiorno Pizza for One brand, it had AKQA build an online application called “The Ditcher” that will call or text a pre-set excuse to leave an unfortunate situation, from a bad date to an endless meeting. The messages range from the alarming (your kid is in trouble) to the ridiculous (the monkey escaped). Pretty clever, no? Maybe not all that original, though. Cell companies have offered similar services for years. Virgin’s “Rescue Rings,” rolled out 18 months ago, offered subscribers a way out of a disastrous date—you’d text a short code to Virgin, and 10 minutes later, you’d get a short message back from Richard Branson. Cingular (now AT&T) has been on this even longer. In 2004, it added an “Escape-a-Date” feature that let users preset a call as a readymade excuse to weasel out of an awkward encounter. Everyone in the ad business obsesses over the originality of ideas in TV and print ads—does the same hold true for tech applications?

More Sarah Marshalls upset over film’s ads

Sarah The makers of Forgetting Sarah Marshall continue to generate buzz thanks to the backlash among real Sarah Marshalls. The ad campaign for the film—mainly billboards featuring scrawled messages like, “I’m so over you Sarah Marshall” and “You DO look fat in those jeans, Sarah Marshall”—first rankled Sarah Marshalls in New York, and now appears to be irritating those in Chicago, too. Some object stridently to the ads. Others more or less take it in stride, joking about their sudden notoriety. All of them, it seems, have access to major media outlets to broadcast their feelings, and promote the movie, far and wide. Frankly, I think they doth protest too much. Did I complain about that “Dave Gianatasio sucks” campaign which ran exclusively in my workplace and at home?

Should 6 year-olds Have Cell Phones?

Parent groups in Europe don’t think so. In fact, they’re calling for a ban on marketing cell phones to children. The conflict arose when a company named Telefonica and a toy company named Imaginarium came together to create and then market the M01, a cell phone for children. According to a recent article posted in the New York Times, the health minister of France had already issued warnings against children using cell phones too much. I just wonder, who could a 6 year-old possibly call? And what in the world would they talk about?

Chupa Chups: lollipops for your suicidal kids

Chupachupsjumper “It’s the end of the world without it,” says this ad for Chupa Chups lollipops. (Click the image to see the full version.) We’re not quite getting it—are we supposed to buy Chupa Chups to keep our already-depressed toddlers from attempting suicide, or do they become suicidal when we run out of Chupa Chups? Either way, it seems Chupa Chups are clearly a danger to children, especially considering their connection to ravers and Salvador Dali. Via Ads of the World.

Robots closer to domination with ‘Bum Bot’

Bumbot
For some time, I’ve tried to warn my fellow man (and certain special ladies) about the dangers of robots. A while back, it was robo-babysitters. Now, we have a 300-pound, waist-high “Bum Bot” patrolling Atlanta, armed with a water cannon to soak vagrants who refuse to “move along.” The AP reports: “The electronic vigilante, on the beat since September, has enraged neighborhood activists, who have threatened protests. Street people say it’s intimidating. And homeless advocates question the intentions of its inventor, who uses the Bum Bot as a marketing tool and a political prop.” A marketing tool? How long will it be before the Coca-Cola Cop-Bot, the Wachovia Watch-Bot and the Humana Health Thrill-Kill 5000 are running amok nationwide? It will end with an endless army of robots advertising the Fox lineup, extolling us to tune in for Cops and America’s Most Wanted, before they turn on the spray and wash us all away forever.
