This is just sad news. Paul Tilley was only 40 years old, has two young daughters and a wife not to mention the DDB creative department who are sadly lacking a great mentor and creative spirit this Monday. Candles lit for all.

Creative chief at ad agency DDB, Chicago Paul Tilley, 40, died Friday evening after falling from a window at the Fairmount Chicago Hotel. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled his death a suicide.

The president for the agency Rick Carpenter said, “Last night, Paul Tilley tragically died at the age of 40. The reality of this news is difficult to comprehend. It is such a loss for DDB, but also for our industry, our community, and certainly for his family and all who loved him…Paul was a mentor to many, a friend to all. His ability to lead, inspire, and yes, entertain will be so greatly missed.”

BTW, I started “playing around” with Tumblr last week. Like Ning, it’s an impressive offering. I just don’t know how much more active I need to be online. Not much more, is what I’m thinking.

Fixed major bug and finally back

Good ol’ Benjamín Jiménez from CódigoPin was kind enough to let me know today of a major glitch on my website that didn’t allow people to view older post pages.

When fixing it I realized it’s been there for a couple months. Huge mistake. Luckily it’s already been fixed, so now you can see the website as it should be.

Thanks again to Pin for the heads up.

And about that finally back part, thing is that almost a month ago my computer died and after many many attempts, I’ve finally made it 100% functional, so now I’ll be resuming the usual post frequency around here.

Greetings to all.

Knowing Where To Drill Is Key. Knowing How To Drill Is Also Good.

One of my favorite bloggers, Scott Karp, is at it again. He’s eloquently addressing the things I’m thinking about and working on in a way that shines light precisely where I need it, when I need it. Yes, Karp’s that good.

I think you’re going to see more social networking sites go vertical, but they will be customized in large and small ways to the type of collaboration they are intended to facilitate. This will be a big challenge for Ning, which is certainly “good enough” for casual networking and collaboration, but may not pass muster for serious business use.

I created a Ning site about 10 days ago with a clear business purpose in mind. And while I’m impressed with Ning’s offering, Karp is right, it’s not customized to my user’s needs. So, I’m thinking of taking the site down (again) and going another way (again).

It’s all a big experiment, this interwebby thing. And nothing online has much of a shelf life. If you’re gonna move on a digital idea, you better do it yesterday.

Measurement Means Money

Microsoft will test a new way to measure the effectiveness of Internet advertising. The move follows its purchase of online marketing company aQuantive for $6 billion last year in an effort to capitalize on the fast-growing online ad market and better compete against Google.

Microsoft’s “Engagement Mapping” is due to begin in beta form on March 1 and departs from a standard that ties sales, leads and traffic to the last ad that a user clicked on online. Instead, it attempts to take into account all the Internet interactions that lead a consumer to buy a product.

The Engagement Mapping approach conveys how each ad exposure — whether display, rich media or search, seen multiple times on multiple sites and across many channels — influenced an eventual purchase.

Obama Girl’s sexiness is befouled by sweat

You know, it’s great that Amber Lee “Obama Girl” Ettinger is making a living, but maybe she should go ahead and set some standards for her new gigs. Like maybe pass on a low-budget spot that calls for her to show off armpit stains and say the line, “I had the problem of excess perspiration.” Well apparently CertainDri works too well, because she apparently has to outsource her sweating.
