Caterpillar "Built For It Trials : Driving Range" (2015) 2:20 (USA)

Just in time for the US Open, pro golfers Erimo and Marimo Ikeuchi test out a movable driving range courtesy of five different Caterpillar machines. Which should not be confused with soccer playing on movable transport trucks courtesy of Nissan.

Toyota "Father's Day redo" (2015) 2:41 (USA)

Just in time for Father’s Day Toyota Camry presents two spots. The first was an intimate story between a father and son reunited. This one is a man-on-the-street interview in which sons and daughters admit Father’s Day isn’t as big a deal to them, but their dad really is. We then see the same people calling their dads, telling them they love them. Then somewhere in the third act we pick up with the story of the son going to see his father for the first time in ages. As a lead in to the spot I linked above it works, but as a stand alone piece, I’m not sure how we got from dozens of people being interviewed about their dads, to telling one guy’s story.

Toyota "Father's Day Reunion" (2015) 2:55 (USA)

Toyota Camry sent one son on a journey to see his Dad for Father’s Day. Nice branded content for Toyota. Father and son still have a strong bond, despite not having seen each other for years. It’s a very touching story without being overly sentimental or patronizing. Judos to Toyota for shining the spotlight on real people in real ways. Not many companies want to talk about divorce, separation and the struggle to keep a family together. Toyota was nice enough to get out of its own way and let the people do the talking.

Nike Soccer – American Woman – (2015) :60 (USA)

Nike Soccer - American Woman - (2015) :60 (USA)
Abby Wambach, Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan and younger girls are struggling with solo practice. Then the music kicks in, and the individuals play together to make a better team. At least that’s what we’re supposed to see in this somewhat pedestrian soccer ad. Music is 70% of a commercial they say, but that doesn’t mean you should slack on the directing and editing, people. Set to the anti-American song “American Woman” by Canadian band The Guess Who’s, wisely missing the bit where they sing “I don’t need your war machines, I don’t need your ghetto scenes” and instead using the line “American woman, stay away from me” as if all the other teams fear this one, we are lead to one conclusion: “Strong alone. Unstoppable together”

The most interesting thing about this ad is that it’s made by Thousands Creative, a two man shop of former Nike people in Portland, Oregon. So fresh on the scene that they only have a spartan tumblr site, this creative team managed to take a chunk of Nike work as their main client.

Wells Fargo – Learning Sign Language – (2015) :60 (USA)

Wells Fargo - Learning Sign Language - (2015) :60 (USA)
Wells Fargo wants to position themselves as the bank for your big steps in life, and have started their new campaign with an emotional story about a lesbian couple adopting an older child.

The first time I watched this ad I forgot to pay attention, and thought that the blond woman was learning sign language as the brunette was hearing impaired. On second view I see that both of the new mommies aren’t hearing impaired, only the child is, and at that point the tearjerking story feels quite forced, as if checking all the boxes. While it’s great to see a positive promotion of adopting an older child, many kids out there are shunned by potential adoptive parents simply because they are older, the story itself could have sold anything from online learning tools to GLAAD memberships. Wells Fargo have a terrible reputation as a bank, and I doubt emotional ads will change that perception as it doesn’t address it at all. They did hit a parental nerve though, parents will do anything for kids, including mastering ASL if needed. Naturally there was some people who disliked the ad, and some controversy around it due to the subject of a lesbian couple adopting, but not enough to make it go viral twice.

Credits were not included but it sounds like Queen Latifah handles the VO: “Everyone works hard for a reason. Working together we can help you prepare financially for when two becomes three.”

Subaru "Who we are is what we leave behind" (2015) 1:56 (2015)

Each year visitors to our beloved national parks create garbage that ends up in our national landfills. Now, Subaru will work with national parks in America to make them zero landfills. It won’t be easy, the video reminds us, This film is long on sentiment, short on details. All it is is an expensive, well produced promise. Subaru’s gonna try. Okay, great. Get back to me when you’ve actually done something.

"Dapper.tv' The Dapper Effect (2015) 1:10 (USA)

A commercial within a commercial within a commercial about commercials featuring blood, gore and swearing for production house Dapper. In other words, Dapper probably just limited its audience based on this commercial within a commercial within a commercial. Congrats.

Subaru "Making memories" (2015) 1:00 (USA)

You can pass down a Subaru but you get to keep the memories. Like the memory when 2015 became the year of Dadvertising™

Activision "Skylanders Superchargers" (2015) 1:30 (USA)

For those without parents, Skylanders is the game all the little kids love (and beg their parents to spend endless amounts of money on.) The new edition, features cool vehicles. The spot features Travis Pastrana, the amazing stunt wunderkind who admits everything he does pales in comparison to the Skylanders crew. Although how true could that be really when every freaking frame has a legal line reminding us it isn’t real game play. Don’t legal lines suck? Yes they do. They’re like your mom and dad coming in the room to tell you to turn that Skylanders crap off and go to bed because it’s past your bed time.

Honest "Honestly Transparent" (2015) :30 (2015)

None of us have x-ray vision to know what’s in our household ingredients, but thankfully there are eco-friendly household companies like Honesty who are transparent with which ingredients go in their products And which ones don’t.

I like how this spot goes from cutesy to pervy when the dad picks up the X-ray glasses at the end and checks out his lady woman and is all like “Imma be ‘transparent’ with you, tonight.”

It helps offset the saccharine qualities of this spot like the stock music and the “pleasant mom” vo.

Hotels.com – Piano – (2015) :60 (USA)

Hotels.com - Piano - (2015) :60 (USA)
Once again, this ad is meant for Facebook only and plays on the idea that Facebook videos are muted by default. In this case that’s a good thing because our Hotels.com spokesperson, Captain Obvious, is absolute shit at playing the piano.

Fallout 4 "Official trailer" (2015) 3:04 (USA)

Official Fallout 4 trailer right here, folks. The game a lot of people have been waiting for is finally back. It starts off great with a flickering back-and-forth between pre and post-apocalyptic life, set to an old song by The Ink Spots. Halfway through the nuclear war and its aftermath takes over and a hero returns. It’s set in Boston, by the way. Oh and there’s also the dog which is part of the entire narrative thread. This spot is a nice stoke piece for everyone just in time for E3. I can’t wait to play it. As a trailer though, it lost me after The Ink Spots stopped and the Serious Scored Music began, but hey, what’d you expect from a trailer this long? I’m sure the core gaming crowd will eat it up, though.

Hotels.com – Interpreter / Awesome – (2015) :30 (USA)

Hotels.com - Interpreter / Awesome - (2015) :30 (USA)
Hotels.com have found a way to (attempt to) cut through the clutter, in “Interpreter” the brand mascot Captain Obvious is using subtitles and an interpreter using American Sign Language. If the video is muted you get subtitles, and if it’s not you hear his spiel, making the ASL interpreter a little redundant…. But as Captain Obvious declares, she is also awesome. Spot on the brands current campaign tone of voice and clever for where the ads is positioned to boot. Love it.

Also love the way she repeats “Awesome.. Awesome…” If you pay attention to the ASL, she says “If you type “Gift me” in the comments you’ll get a gift card”.

Arrowhead: Born Better (Than You) – (2015)

Arrowhead: Born Better (Than You) - (2015)
Arrowhead water has been pumping water from National Forests for 27 years with an expired permit, they’ve been bottling and selling California water during the drought. Turns out their permit to isn’t the only thing that expired, they also forgot to renew the domain registration that is burned into their commercials : http://www.arrowheadbornbetter.com – so they now have this attack (they call it a parody) commercial appearing on their old domain. Ouch! Lets see how quickly this is taken offline, shall we?

Pets can help stop domestic abuse.

It will probably come as no surprise, but 76% of those who beat animals also beat family members. These bus shelter ads went up around Milwaukee to spread the word that animals can help in this situation. If you see an abused animal, call 911. There’s a good chance the person doing the abusing is doing the same to a family member.

Michelob Golden Light "Lake" (2015) :30 (USA)

Michelob Golden Light is the beer for those who like being outside, especially in Minnesota, enjoying their thousands of lakes and grilling. Gee, somebody better not tell Corona about this. After all, they are the summer beer.

BapMart "Michael Got a dog" (2015) :30 (USA)

You can save a lot of money by buying your asian groceries through BapMart.com. What this has to do with Michael getting a new dog, or the little man in the yellow shirt who keeps repeating “BapMart” is beyond me.

BapMart "Wedding dress" (2015) :30 (USA)

So BapMart.com is an online grocery store that sells Asian groceries. And this spot tells me that if I say that word out loud, a man will appear and say BapMart over and over again.

BapMart "Vacation Time" (2015) :30 (USA)

BapMart.com is an online Asian Grocery store where you can save a lot of money on your goods. So much money in fact you can use it to take a trip. But not before a strange man appears out of nowhere and says BapMart over and over again. I guess it’s the old “Say the name three times and people will remember it,” idea. Or four. Whatever.
