JWT CEO Sherman Moves on to EVP Role at Omnicom

Peter ShermanOmnicom has has just announced the appointment of Peter Sherman as executive vice president, where he will “report directly to John Wren on a series of major initiatives that include driving innovation and collaboration across the holding company’s client portfolio.”

Sherman joins Omnicom from JWT, where he served as CEO, North America, managing client relationships while overseeing the strategic direction and creative reputation of the region. He joined JWT in June of last year as CEO of its New York office and was promoted to CEO, North America in December. The agency had several important client wins during his time there. Prior to JWT, Sherman was executive vice president and managing director of BBDO Europe, leading 35 BBDO offices in 18 countries across the continent. Before the move, Sherman spent nearly five years as managing director of BBDO West in San Francisco, following eight years at BBDO New York during which he rose to executive vice president and senior account director.

“Peter has a proven track record of effectively managing some of BBDO’s largest clients and he certainly exemplifies our culture of creativity, collaboration and integrity,” said John Wren, president and CEO of Omnicom Group. “His global experience in multiple categories is perfect for the role of strengthening our relationships with our biggest clients by providing them with better and more integrated services. I am delighted he is returning to Omnicom.”

JWT Nabs Puma Biz

“Forever Faster.” Remember that mantra as it’s the 2014 tagline for Puma, which has now appointed JWT as its global creative agency in a move that will span North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Middle East/African regions. In a statement, the sports/shoe/apparel brand’s CEO Björn Gulden says, “In JWT, we have found an agile agency with a global reach that understands the PUMA brand and culture. The team quickly proved that they could deliver on our new mission to become the Fastest Sports Brand in the World. Together we’ll craft a more nimble creative structure that will allow us to support all of the company’s sporting and lifestyle categories with a single consumer message and streamlined creative concept across territories.”

JWT New York will spearhead creative on the account, which was previously handled by Droga5. According to sources, BBH and Barton F. Graf 9000 were also in the pitch, which we hear JWT wasn’t initially invited to but eventually became a “dark horse.” Yet, “chemistry” worked out and due to touting a “small agency-style creative” at a network agency, which the brand didn’t expect, JWT won out thanks to a pitch led by the agency’s NY CEO Peter Sherman, North American CCO Jeff Benjamin and director of business development Emilie Vasu.

Sherman Assumes CEO Role at JWT NY

Well, a friend chimed in with this a little while ago, but guess we got beat to the punch. Anyhow, JWT has welcomed Peter Sherman as chief executive officer of its New York hub. Sherman had spent the last three-and-a-years as EVP/managing director for BBDO Europe and eight years in all at the agency prior to moving back to NYC. Sherman had spent well over a decade at  Omnicom-owned BBDO, which included a four-year stint as managing director of its San Francisco office and EVP/senior account director in NY.

From what we’ve been told, JWT North America CEO David Eastman‘s title remains the same, and despite the NYC shift, he will still oversee the WPP-owned agency’s Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Canada offices, as well as units Digitaria, Lunchbox, JWT Action, JWT Inside, Casa and SCPF. Sherman, meanwhile, will focus specifically on overseeing New York operations. The latter exec adds in a statement, “It will be a privilege to lead this team.”
