MRY CEO Britton to Oversee Big Fuel

bigfuel_logo

To update our recent post on MRY‘s status in the wake of this month’s Publicis shakeup, we can confirm that founder/CEO Matt Britton will now oversee the operations of both his own agency and fellow New York shop Big Fuel. The agency founded by Avi Savar announced in 2011 that it would sell to Publicis, where it initially served as a “social media center” for Razorfish, Digitas, Zenith and Starcom).

This week Laura Desmond, CEO of the Starcom Mediavest group that now includes both MRY and Big Fuel, announced that their leaders would report to Britton, who will subsequently report to her.

The move has not been announced outside the newly expanded Starcom because it will not reportedly affect any of the services that either agency provides to clients.

While the leaders of both shops will report to Britton moving forward, they will remain operationally independent from one another. (As a reminder, one of Big Fuel’s most recent major staffing moves was the hire of former Dachis Group ECD Jon Resnik as EVP/ECD.)

Geometry Signs Jon Hamm as Global CCO

Jon HammEarlier in the month we let you know that Jon Hamm would be leaving his chief creative/innovation officer position at Momentum Worldwide to move back to his hometown of London — and now we know why.

Starting in November, he will occupy the newly created role of CCO at Geometry Global in the UK just over one year after the agency came to life via the G2/Ogilvy Action merger.

Some background: Hamm assumed the global CCO role at Momentum in 2009, one year after his own agency Greenroom Digital was purchased by IPG/Momentum (clients included Sony PlayStation, Nestle, TopShop, and Twentieth Century Fox). In his own words, he moved to New York “to transform an ‘analogue’ agency” by both directing creative for clients like AmEx, Coca Cola, Nestle, Sony and by leading new divisions like Momentum Entertainment Group.

No word on the sort of work Hamm will be doing in London, though he will report directly to Geometry’s Global CEO Steve Harding.

CCO Darren Moran No Longer with Havas

darren moranToday we confirmed several tips regarding Chief Creative Officer Darren Moran, who is no longer with Havas Worldwide in New York.

While we don’t have any information regarding the nature of his departure or his future plans, we can say that the move was recent: the tips first popped up this morning.

For context, Moran arrived at Havas’ New York office last August after a one-year stint in the ECD role at BBDO New York and two years spent as CCO at what was then DraftFCB in Manhattan. (We last heard from him when he commented on the hiring of Creative Director Kate McCagg, formerly of Razorfish, back in April.)

We don’t have a list of recent work led by Moran, but based on the internal memo that greeted his arrival last year we can say that he directed creative for all Havas New York clients. He has also earned mentions from nearly every major awards show during his 24-plus years in the industry.

Moran’s “co-CCO” Jason Peterson remains the agency’s chief creative officer.

Ad Council Announces New President/CEO

Laura ShermanSeveral months after the April announcement that Peggy Conlon would step down after 15 years as president/CEO of The Ad Council, the group has announced her successor: Lisa Sherman will assume the role starting November 3rd.

Sherman spent eight years launching and managing Viacom’s LGBT-themed channel Logo TV, where she currently serves as EVP/general manager. Sherman announced her resignation from that role nearly one year ago, and in the meantime has held advisory roles such as Vice Chair of the Board of the New York City-based God’s Love We Deliver.

Before joining Logo, Sherman spent nearly two decades in various communications/marketing roles with Verizon and founded a marketing services company called Women’s Sports Network. She also brings agency experience to the new role after spending two two years at Hill Holliday New York as EVP/SVP of new business and account management.

Laura Desmond, the global CEO of Starcom MediaVest who became the Council’s new chair in July, had this to say about Sherman:

“Her background spanning media, advertising and corporate brands, as well as the charitable arena, provide her with a unique 360 view that will serve the Ad Council well.”

From the press release, Managing Director Kevin Wertz is now the agency’s president. Wertz joined LCE in 2007 and moved to Texas in 2009 to open its San Antonio office; in the new role he will split his time between Texas and Michigan, reporting directly to CEO Jim Palmer.

This announcement comes two weeks after LCE officially won the Cadillac account from Hill Holliday, but Wertz will not manage that client; his new responsibilities include leading all of the agency’s non-automotive accounts in both offices as well as handling “media, strategic planning, analytics, digital strategy and social media capabilities.” Prior to joining Lowe, he served as VP/account director at Doner.

Two New ECDs at Saatchi & Saatchi

Chris MoreiraMark SchollerHere’s one we missed today: Jay Benjamin of Saatchi & Saatchi New York has signed two new ECDs to his roster.

In what looks like one of the bigger moves made since Benjamin left Leo Burnett for Saatchi in April, he hired Chris Moreira and Mark Schöller, both of whom most recently served as creative directors in CP+B’s Miami office.

The two are native Australians, and they worked together at both JWT and Leo Burnett’s Sydney offices before moving to Miami just over a year ago.

AdAge notes that the pair will be “working across the agency’s account portfolio”, which most recently included work for Cheerios (Honey Nut and otherwise), UGG and Duracell.

Y&R Hires Top Planner from R/GA

delange2In quick staffing news, Dick de Lange has left R/GA after working in its planning department for more than three years to assume the top role at Y&R.

de Lange joined R/GA in August 2011 after spending just over a year as head of group planning at JWT New York. Prior to that stint, he spent five years with Saatchi & Saatchi, splitting that time between the agency’s Sydney and New York offices. He also spent most of a decade with DDB in Amsterdam, Sydney and Chicago.

While de Lange joined R/GA to run the Nike account, he most recently worked on Samsung global — and Adweek tells us that his hire serves to replace outgoing planner Hope Cowan.

Since de Lange will lead the department, he will work on all of the agency’s existing accounts.

ECD Gaboriau No Longer with CP+B Los Angeles

CPB-LogoThis afternoon we learned that VP/ECD Jason Gaboriau is no longer with Crispin’s Los Angeles office.

He joined CP+B in 2011 when the agency hired him, along with co-ECD and in-house vet Tiffany Rolfe, to re-establish its L.A. location.

Gaboriau, who helped found New York’s Amalgamated, made the move to L.A. after former DDB CCO Eric Silver took majority ownership of the previous agency in late 2010. Rolfe later left CP+B to join CO: Collective, where she still serves as partner and chief content officer. Several months afterward, CP+B lured Sue Anderson away from TBWAChiatDay, where she had served as GCD on the Absolut account; she currently holds the ECD title at CP+B L.A.

At Amalgamated, Gaboriau worked on creative for Coca-Cola, Svedka and Ben & Jerry’s, among other clients. Recent CP+B credits include A1 and an extended 2012 campaign for Old Navy that played heavily on 90?s nostalgia.

We have no information on the details of Gaboriau’s departure, though a tipster tells us that he was involved in recent pitches to win business from Turbo Tax, the L.A. Clippers (which went with RPA after a very quick review) and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Michael Canning Joins 72andSunny as GCD

Michael Canning photoBack in July we reported that ECD Michael Canning had left Leo Burnett’s New York office, and today we know where he went: to the West Coast and a new group creative director role at 72andSunny.

Canning — another Australian — was hired by Burnett in 2011 along with his creative partner Kieran Antill in order to help the agency open its then-fledgling New York office along with current Saatchi CCO Jay Benjamin.

For context: Sydney native Canning wrote copy for Lowe Hunt and BMF before moving to Leo Burnett in his home country; he’s also won an award or two. His quote from the release:

“LA has emerged as the new epicenter of branded content, tech and entertainment, and 72andSunny is right in the middle of that.”

72?s most recent creative staffing announcement concerned the promotion of GCD Matt Murphy to partner; the agency also lost CD Jamie Reilly to indie agency Kastner & Partners earlier this summer in what looks like an unrelated move. The release offers no details on which accounts Canning will handle or to whom he will report.

New Kastner CCO on the Appeal of Moving from a Big Agency to an Indie Shop

jamie reillyLast month we learned, via MediaPost, that Los Angeles indie agency Kastner & Partners (best known as Red Bull’s longtime AOR) had appointed a new CCO.

The agency recently made it official with a release announcing the hire of Jamie Reilly to run the shop’s creative department. The most interesting part of the story, though, is Reilly’s history: after beginning his agency career as an art director at Deutsch LA and freelancing for Saatchi & Saatchi and other shops, Reilly spent almost nine years at TBWAMAL, the West Coast Apple-only agency that has, at times, seemed nearly as secretive as the client itself.

He then joined 72andSunny as a creative director in January 2013 before leaving at the beginning of this month to join Kastner.

We wondered what sort of trade-off could lead an experienced creative to leave a big name for a smaller, less-established shop.

Today Reilly gave us his take on the transition.

Former TBWA MD Leaves Quiksilver

Nick DrakeWe learned this afternoon that Nick Drake – former global managing director at TBWAChiatDay who just happens to share the name of our favorite semi-obscure late 60?s British folk singer – is no longer with Quiksilver, the company that made those surfboards all our friends used to ride the pathetic Myrtle Beach waves in the early 90?s.

The company’s CEO Andy Mooney noted that Drake’s departure marks a downsizing for the company and that nine other marketing positions were also eliminated.

Sid Lee Announces New Creative Leadership

Tom and Jeffrey

Sid Lee has announced the promotions of Tom Koukodimos and Jeffrey DaSilva to the positions of executive creative directors, jointly taking creative leadership of the agency’s Toronto office. Koukodimos and DaSilva have served as creative directors at Sid Lee since arriving in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Executive Creative Director Dave Roberts is leaving Sid Lee Toronto after four years, in order to return to Sid Lee Montreal for a new global assignment.

Tom and Jeffrey were behind such recent work as the “We the North” campaign for the Toronto Raptors and “It’s a Bloody Big Deal” for Toronto FC. In their new positions, the pair will oversee creative leadership on all Toronto accounts, including Coca Cola Canada, Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, Post Media, Google Canada, Marks, Sport Chek, PC Financial and TJX Canada.

McKinney Names Adam Levine CMO

mckinney

Today McKinney announced the appointment of Adam Levine, who most recently served as EVP/global brand marketing director at Deutsch, as its new CMO.

Levine landed at Deutsch’s New York office just over three years ago to help the agency run its Microsoft account. Before that, he spent one year and eight months as chief growth officer at what was then DraftFCB before leaving in January 2011, and the release notes that he helped defend the Merck and White House Office of National Drug Control Policy accounts during that period.

The new CMO has a more extensive agency history than most: his first stint as a Deutsch employee lasted nearly a decade and ended with him serving as EVP/brand director, and he also spent five years working on new business at DDB.

Levine officially left Deutsch for the second time six months ago to become a self-described “free agent”, and in the press release McKinney Chairman/CEO Brad Brinegar clarifies that he will “split his time between McKinney’s new offices in SoHo [which opened in January 2013] and our headquarters office in Durham”. We enjoyed Levine’s official quote:

“…I won’t rhapsodize some BS about my role. It’s actually quite simple: Grow the agency.”

His roles outside the world of advertising include Chairman of the Board at Live Out Loud, a nonprofit created to help gay youth further their own careers by connecting them with established professionals in the community.

DDB Strategy Director Joins Heat

Justin CoxConfirming an earlier tip, this morning San Francisco’s Heat announced the hiring of Justin Cox as director of strategy.

Cox most recently filled the same role at DDB California, which hired him away from Pereira O’Dell; he spent less than one year in the position.

The release notes that Cox will lead Heat’s strategy team with the ultimate goal of helping clients like EA, Kendall-Jackson, Bank of the West, Levi Strauss & Co. and Teva to “determine the role of their brand in the lives and culture of their target audience.”

Cox served as senior brand strategist at Pereria before moving to the strategic director role, where he handled accounts like Skype, Intel, Amazon and Guitar Center while also working on new business. His early career included planning roles at Publicis & Hal Riney and Razorfish, where he worked on the Microsoft and Sony accounts (among others).

Heat President John Elder writes that Cox will be “a welcome addition to Heat’s deep strategic bench, even if he’s a Dodgers fan.”

The release tells us that Cox’s other roles include SXSW speaker, WSJ.com contributor and account planning instructor at Academy of Art University and Miami Ad School.

We Hear: ECD No Longer with Cramer-Krasselt

cramer krasseltWhile we have very little to go on at the moment, a tipster tells us that Larry Hampel, who spent nearly a decade at Cramer-Krasselt and most recently held the executive creative director title, is no longer with the agency.

Things we do know: Hampel joined the agency almost exactly ten years ago to become one of the co-creative directors in its then-new New York office. This move followed a ten-year stint running Hampel/Stefanides, the agency he co-founded with fellow CD Dean Stefanides. His work during that period includes multiple PSAs attributed the Ad Council.

A tipster pointed us toward Hampel’s LinkedIn profile, which lists his current position as “Chief Creative Officer, Self-Employed” and has his stint with Cramer-Krasselt ending this year.

Unfortunately, we have not received word from the agency today so we can’t elaborate on the details of the story. More information as it arrives.

CCO Eric Springer Out at FCB/West

Springer-Headshot_lowrez-300x200 (1)Today we can confirm that Eric Springer is no longer serving as chief creative officer at FCB/West.

Springer, who like former Deutsch colleague David Povill gained attention thanks to his work on the VW Super Bowl spot from 2011, left that agency’s LA office to serve as CCO at Culver City shop Pitch back in January 2012. After spending approximately one year there, he was hired by FBC/West (then DraftFCB West) to fill the EVP/CCO role.

During the one year and nine months he spent at FCB, Springer produced work for clients like Taco Bell, Levi’s and Nabi, maker of child-friendly tablets.

We have no word on the reasons for his departure or his future plans; we only know that, in the words of an agency spokesperson, “a search for his successor is underway.”
