Binge advertising?

Tribeca Film Festival to spotlight branded films

Brands take center stage at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival (April 24 to May 5) during a day dedicated to partnerships between artists and advertisers.

The indie film fest’s conference now includes Tribeca X: A Day of Conversations (Friday, April 26) on the state of branded content. Mark Pritchard, chief brand officer at P&G, will be the event’s keynote speaker, and other participants include Fiona Carter, AT&T Communications chief brand officer, Doug Melville, TBWA Worldwide chief diversity officer and Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. Actress Natasha Lyonne will share a filmmaker’s perspective.

“Our goal with this is try to cross-pollinate the world of independent film making and branded work,” says festival director Cara Cusumano. “We’ve been seeing a lot of good work and ideas, and we wanted to carve out more of a space for that.”

Millions of Facebook records exposed on Amazon cloud servers

Facebook user data is still showing up in places it shouldn’t.

Researchers at UpGuard, a cybersecurity firm, found troves of user information hiding in plain sight, inadvertently posted publicly on Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud computing servers. The discovery shows that a year after the Cambridge Analytica scandal exposed how unsecure and widely disseminated Facebook users’ information is online, companies that control that information at every step still haven’t done enough to seal up private data.

In one instance, Mexico City-based digital platform Cultura Colectiva, openly stored 540 million records on Facebook users, including identification numbers, comments, reactions and account names. The records were accessible and downloadable for anyone who could find them online. That database was closed on Wednesday after Bloomberg alerted Facebook to the problem and Facebook contacted Amazon. Facebook shares pared their gains after the Bloomberg News report.

Patagonia cracks down on the Wall Street uniform

Patagonia Inc. is cracking down on the corporate logo vests that have become wardrobe staples on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley.

The outdoor gear maker won’t create the products for just anyone through its corporate sales program. Recently, Patagonia has shifted its focus to “mission-driven companies that prioritize the planet,” the company said in a statement late Tuesday. It has made gear for all kinds of companies in the past, from big banks to nonprofit organizations.

Patagonia said it wants to add more companies that have the B Corp designation to its client list — businesses that meet certain environmental, social and transparency standards and are certified by a private organization. Patagonia itself is a B Corp and some financial and technology firms also have that status.

Behind Accenture's groundbreaking Droga5 deal

Accenture Interactive today announced it has reached a deal to acquire Droga5 in what it’s calling a game-changer for the business.

Buying Droga5 could put to rest the notion that consultants pose little threat to ad agencies because they lack creativity. Still, skeptics have questioned the ability of creative shops to thrive under the ownership of big consultancies, which have attempted to bolster their marketing services offerings in recent years via acquisitions.

Accenture Interactive did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. But a spokesman confirmed it was the largest agency acquisition the group has made when measured by price, revenue and headcount. That suggests a price tag north of the $283 million it paid in 2013 for Acquity Group, a large Chicago-based digital agency.
