Watch the newest commercials on TV from Ancestry, Mastercard, T-Mobile and more


Every weekday we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, the TV ad measurement and attribution company. The ads here ran on national TV for the first time yesterday.

A few highlights: T-Mobile interrupts its own ad featuring the Samsung Galaxy S10e with a series of three important text messages. Pro golfers Tom Watson and Justin Rose help Mastercard promote its tap-to-pay feature. And Ancestry suggests that you order an AncestryDNA kit to “find the surprises in you.”

Game of Thrones' SXSW activation literally has people bleeding for devotion

To promote the latest season of Game of Thrones at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas this weekend, HBO has transformed a space into a living ode to the franchisecomplete with an area where visitors, asked if they will “bleed for the throne,” can donate blood to the American Red Cross. This year’s installation for the show’s eighth and final season is open at Fair Market, an events venue on the city’s east side, through Saturday.

Visitors have the option to donate blood onsite, then are asked to walk “in the shoes of those who have bled in seasons past” through a set with an audio guide. Visitors then can sit in on a pinning ceremony, which calls visitors up by name and asks for them to kneel before a throne. Finally, visitors are led outside to a “war camp,” with actors portraying soldiers, a band playing and burgers from Shake Shack.

At SXSW, Snapchat Lenses bring 'Game of Thrones,' Pikachu to life


Snapchat is relying on its augmented reality to separate the company from rivals like Facebook, Google and Apple. Snapchat was one of the first to popularize augmented reality with its Lenses, which are digital animations that transform videos.

“Snapchat is still top of the game when it comes to AR,” says Noah Mallin, head of experience, content and sponsorships at Wavemaker, a WPP agency. “They want to help brands understand that here is something they do really well.”

Snapchat is fighting for position among the digital giants, which so far have been able to copy most of its other innovations, like vertical videos and ephemeral messaging. Facebook, Google and Apple all have their own augmented reality platforms, too. “Apple’s next-generation iOS [phone software] is going to really crack AR open,” Mallin says.

Ex-Fox News executive Bill Shine resigns from the White House


Senior White House aide Bill Shine, a former executive at Fox News, has resigned from his position after eight months, press secretary Sarah Sanders said Friday.

Shine, the White House deputy chief of staff for communications, spent more than two decades at Fox News, working as a producer and then climbing his way up the ranks of management. He left the network in 2018 after being forced out of his position as co-president.

The White House said Shine wasn’t ousted from President Donald Trump’s team, and Sanders said he will join the Trump 2020 campaign as a senior adviser.
