This Christmas Eve, JetBlue and MullenLowe Are Wrapping Five Live

One problem that many consumer promotions suffer from is believability. People don’t believe they will ever win the prize that’s being dangled before them. Like winning the lottery, the odds are against it. One way to combat this is to make the promotion even more unbelievable. JetBlue and MullenLowe have managed to do this with […]

Facebook e-mails reveal Zuckerberg deliberations on user data

Facebook is being accused by U.K. lawmakers of offering access to its users and their data based on the amount of money a prospective partner would spend, following the latest document dump painting its leadership team in a potentially unflattering light.

On Wednesday, British lawmaker Damian Collins published a trove of Facebook’s internal emails, including correspondence from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, related to how the social network gives access to developers.

The newly released e-mails give an unprecedented look into Zuckerberg’s personal feelings about how the company would make some of its most crucial business decisions between 2012 and 2016 regarding allowing outside companies to build on top of its platform.

Google, IBM, Oracle to talk tech at White House amid trade war

Technology industry leaders are expected at the White House for a summit Thursday to talk about emerging innovations like artificial intelligence while the effects of the administration’s trade war with China loom in the background.

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai, International Business Machines Corp.’s Ginni Rometty, Oracle Corp.’s CEO Safra Catz, Microsoft Corp.’s Satya Nadella and Qualcomm Inc.’s Steve Mollenkopf are among those expected to attend.

Pichai, who is also due to testify before a congressional panel on Dec. 11, will join the group after Trump has repeatedly accused his company of systematically biasing search and news results against conservatives–a charge with little evidence but one that other Republican politicians have picked up. The Alphabet Inc. unit is also under fire for its project to build a censored search engine for China, which Pichai has insisted is only exploratory.

Mediator: A Conservative Magazine May Pay a Price for Being Unfriendly to Trump

The Weekly Standard is facing the consequences of doing independent journalism in an increasingly partisan environment.

72andSunny loses Coors Banquet account to Mekanism

MDC Partners-owned 72andSunny has lost the Coors Banquet account to Mekanism. A MillerCoors spokeswoman confirmed the move today. 72andSunny still has the much-larger Coors Light account, according to the spokeswoman. But the Banquet loss is an ominous sign for 72andSunny because MillerCoors has traditionally kept the Coors family of brands at the same agency.

But it’s not all good news for Mekanism, either. The independent agency is on the losing end of another MillerCoors account shift with the brewer moving its Redd’s brand of flavored malt beverages to Omnicom’s Energy BBDO. The Chicago-based agency joined the MillerCoors roster in October when it picked up creative for Cape Line, a new low-calorie flavored malt beverage brand that MillerCoors announced in August. Omnicom’s DDB Chicago is the lead agency for Miller Lite.

MillerCoors shoveled $184 million in measured media into the Coors family of brands in 2017, according to the Ad Age Datacenter. Coors Light, the second-largest beer in the U.S., accounts for most of that spending. 72andSunny picked up all the Coors brands in late 2015 after MillerCoors cut WPP’s Cavalry of Chicago. But Coors Light has been stuck in a slump lately. Case sales volume fell 6.3 percent in the year-to-date period ending Nov. 24, according to Nielsen. Coors Banquet did not do much better, falling 6.2 percent.

NFL taps 72andSunny as its new lead creative agency

The National Football League has tapped 72andSunny as its new lead creative agency, taking over for WPP’s Grey.

The MDC Partners shop’s first campaign with the client is expected to run in early 2019. Grey, which did not participate in the review, declined to comment on the switch.

Tim Ellis joined the NFL as CMO in August, coming over from gaming giant Activision, where he also served as CMO. In July, Activision opted to stick with 72andSunny, its agency of record since 2012, after conducting an agency review.

Electronic Arts cuts Hunt

The popular NFL video game franchise Madden has digitally removed former Kansas City Chiefs all-star running back Kareem Hunt. The move comes days after TMZ released a video of Hunt attacking and kicking a 19-year-old woman while she was down. The Chiefs cut Hunt hours after the video was released and now Electronic Arts, publishers of Madden, has taken similar action. This isn’t the first time this happened, either: EA made a similar move in 2008 with then Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who sparked massive outrage for murdering dogs that failed to fight well in his dog fighting ring. Vick later returned to Madden following his release from prison.

The concept of bride kidnapping may seem alien to Americans, but in some parts of the world it’s an ancient custom that, even though illegal, persists to this day.
