The ousted chief executive Leslie Moonves’s severance pay is a $120 million question, but shareholders didn’t ask about it.

CBS Corp. executives at the company’s annual meeting in New York faced no questions about the investigation into charges of sexual harassment by former Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves.
The media giant held the meeting at a tense moment. Lawyers are probing whether Moonves deserves any of his $120 million severance, and women’s-rights activists threatened to protest on Tuesday morning outside of the site of the gathering, the Museum of Modern Art.
The scene inside was quiet. One shareholder asked about progress in renewing a deal with “Judge Judy” star Judy Sheindlin. Another said CBS owed him money from when he was a foreign correspondent for the network many years ago. Still another asked when the CBS broadcast network was going to have another hit, because ratings are down.
Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai kicked off his first appearance before Congress Tuesday refuting claims of bias, explaining the company’s privacy approach and stressing its American roots.
As the hearing began, the heads of both political parties led with questions about Google’s data collection. Republican Bob Goodlatte asked how much personal information Google absorbs via its Android mobile software.
Pichai stressed that users opt in to certain data-tracking features, giving the example of fitness apps that measure steps. However, the CEO did not directly respond to a question about whether Android device users fully understand the terms of the operating system. “Beyond the terms of service, we actually offer, we remind users to do a privacy check up,” he said. “And we make it very obvious.”
TV coverage of literary fiction has dwindled, but Trevor Noah and Seth Meyers are exceptions. “Who would have guessed that a 700-page novel would be on national TV?” one publishing executive said.
