Trick-or-Trump: The New Yorker gives POTUS the Halloween treatment

Just in time for Halloween, The New Yorker is out with a playful trick-or-treat-themed coverwith a political edge. The work of illustrator Mark Ulriksen, a longtime contributor to the magazine, it shows President Donald Trump striking fear into the hearts of trick-or-treaters. Trump looks entirely self-satisfied as he totes two overstuffed jack-o’-lantern candy bucketspresumably a nod to Trump’s documented personal treat-related priorities (see “Trump gets 2 scoops of ice cream, everyone else gets 1and other top lines from his Time interview,” via CNN in May 2017) and, well, his approach to fiscal policy (“The Trump Tax Cuts Did One Thing: Give Rich People More Money,” per New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait last month).

In a brisk interview with Ulriksen conducted by New Yorker Art Editor Franoise Mouly, he mostly talks about his family Halloween traditions, but he does briefly address the political subtext of the Nov. 5 cover:

Mouly: Your previous Halloween covers have featured a haunted version of the Capitol and some colorful characters in Congress. We’re sensing a theme.

Apple is giving its iPad the most extensive upgrade since 2015, and just like the iPhone, the home button and headphone jack are gone.

On Tuesday in Brooklyn, Apple executives unveiled new iPad Pro models in two screen sizes–11-inch and 12.9-inch–that include key features from the latest iPhones. The updated tablets include slimmer sides that make the displays look nearly edge-to-edge, faster processors, an upgraded back camera, and Face ID for unlocking the device, making payments, and sending customized emojis.

The update to the iPad Pro is the first since June 2017. The A12X Bionic chip in the latest model brings speeds, artificial intelligence processing, and graphics up to par with the latest iPhones.

Land O'Lakes pulls backing for Iowa's King over racial remarks

Dairy giant Land O’Lakes announced Tuesday that it will no longer make financial contributions to Representative Steve King of Iowa after a gun-fueled massacre at a Pittsburgh synagogue brought new attention to the Republican’s incendiary comments about race and association with white nationalism.

The murder of 11 people, many elderly, in the mass shooting this weekend resulted in the arrest of a man who allegedly made anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant rants online. King has been at the forefront of a right-wing push to end birthright citizenship, a policy President Donald J. Trump said in an interview with Axios he would seek to enact, despite protections under the U.S. Constitution.

King, who has previously made derogatory remarks about immigrants, also expressed admiration for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn and tweeted support for his attacks on George Soros, a billionaire supporter of the Democratic Party who last week was one of a dozen recipients of mailbombs allegedly sent by a Trump supporter. The Iowa Republican also recently tweeted his endorsement of Faith Goldy to be the next mayor of Toronto. Goldy has been tied to white supremacists and was interviewed by the neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer. In 2017, she attended the white supremacist Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, during which a counter-protester was run down and killed.
