Marla Kaplowitz is 'tired of the gloom and doom'

It comes as no surprise that Marla Kaplowitz is not a fan of the trend among brands to bring agency capabilities in house. As president and CEO of the 4A’s her job is to be the cheerleader-in-chief for advertising agencies. In this episode of Remotely Entertaining shot on the floor of the ANA Masters of Marketing conference in Orlando this week Kaplowitz breaks down her vision (with the help of a couple of emojis).

“It’s important for marketers to remember they need that outside thinking, that outside provocation. And agencies do that in a brilliant way,” she says.

She believes the agency-CMO relationship, which has had some choppy waters, is improving. “It’s strengthening. It’s been challenged,” she says. “To me the best CMOs see any external partner or agency as an extension of their own team and the way they work. The best agencies are only really going to deliver the best work when they’re valued and brought under the fold to really understand the business dynamics and what’s happening.”

Adobe and Dungeons & Dragons dream up a monstrous promotion

At Wizards of the Coast, the team behind the classic tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons uses Adobe Creative Cloud to paint and manipulate slavering beasts and powerful enemies for players to face in fantasy combat. Now the two companies — one traditionally analog and one decidedly digital — are joining forces to promote both Adobe’ Photoshop and a new game from Wizards of the Coast.

The partnership was a natural fit, said Daniel Presedo, software specialist at Adobe, because “a lot of folks on the Photoshop team played D&D when they were younger.”

There are also a number of Dungeon & Dragon fans at PR shop Edelman, which helped the agency conceive of the contest idea for their client, Adobe, and pitch it to WotC. “It was basically a cold call,” says Edelman Chief Creative Officer Tom Parker about the first contact with the D&D team. “With a lot of confidence. When an idea is right, you expect the response you’re going to get is going to be enthusiastic.”

Her lawyer, Bryan Freedman, said Friday that she remains an employee of NBC and “discussions about next steps are continuing.”

The skyrocketing growth of internal agencies78 percent of marketers now have some form of in-house team, up from 58 percent five years ago, according to an ANA report released this monthhas been a continual theme in several presentations at the ANA Masters of Marketing Conference this week.

In fact, it’s such a popular topic that the ANA plans to host its first in-house agency conference next March in Orlando, ANA group executive VP Bill Duggan announced on Friday. The three-day event will include presentations from internal creatives at Verizon, Chobani and Clorox.

At the Masters of Marketing, opening keynote presenter Jeff Charney, CMO of Progressive Insurance, which has had its own internal agency for years, gave ANA CEO Bob Liodice a (verbal) “major high five” on the increasing trend. While Progressive uses some external agencies to supplement its internal work, Charney said, “You can’t over-depend on your agency-they can only do so much.”

Deloitte Digital's Alicia Hatch on the evolution of the modern CMO

Early on at the ANA Masters of Marketing conference in Orlando this week, 200 top marketing executives gathered together to hash out some of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the industry right now. (For more on the Master’s Circle, see our Day 1 blog.) Chief among the participants was Alicia Hatch, the Deloitte Digital CMO and a booster for the modern marketer.

Ad Age caught up with Hatch for a quick video chat and a game we call “Lit or Shit,” designed to get frank, off-the-cuff answers to some of the bigger questions today (plus one or two softballs).

“CMOs can be more powerful than ever. CMOs have a seat at the board table. Marketing is more strategic than ever,” she says. “Seventy-six percent of CMOs now have P&L responsibility. That’s new.”

What Marketers Can Learn From Netflix and The League’s Partnership

The marketing and advertising industry has evolved dramatically since its inception, often out of necessity. Direct mailers worked until everyone’s mailbox became over saturated with junk mail and they started throwing offers away without looking. Email marketing changed that but led to unmanageable inboxes, causing consumers to favor the bulk delete action in their inbox….
