Hope for Facebook earnings: no more surprises

Facebook is nearing the end of its toughest year as a public company. Ahead of results on Tuesday, analysts are hoping the news can’t get any worse.

YellaWood: Boards

Boards of YellaWood brand pressure treated pine lumber fly into place, piece by piece, to create some very large backyard decks. For homeowners, the larger part of the campaign’s target audience, the aspirational visuals are the message. Those are some seriously impressive decks (and so easily constructed!). For the other target, contractors, it’s the text that carries the weight. The campaign’s new positioning (and its only words besides the brand’s long-running tag), holds up YellaWood as the key to “five-star back yards.” For contractors these days, star-based social ratings are practically a new business requirement.

Fire Your CMO? This year's ANA meeting was full of heat

It was hardly the kind of presentation title you’d expect at a marketing conference geared for CMOs. But the talk, led by investment banker Terry Kawaja of Luma Partners, proved to be one of the more popular sessions at the Association of National Advertisers annual “Masters of Marketing” conference, which drew an estimated 3,000 people to the Rosen Shingle Creek resort in Orlando resort.

The title: “Fire your CMO.”

Trick-or-Trump: The New Yorker gives POTUS the Halloween treatment

Just in time for Halloween, The New Yorker is out with a playful trick-or-treat-themed coverwith a political edge. The work of illustrator Mark Ulriksen, a longtime contributor to the magazine, it shows President Donald Trump striking fear into the hearts of trick-or-treaters. Trump looks entirely self-satisfied as he totes two overstuffed jack-o’-lantern candy bucketspresumably a nod to Trump’s documented personal treat-related priorities (see “Trump gets 2 scoops of ice cream, everyone else gets 1and other top lines from his Time interview,” via CNN in May 2017) and, well, his approach to fiscal policy (“The Trump Tax Cuts Did One Thing: Give Rich People More Money,” per New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait last month).

In a brisk interview with Ulriksen conducted by New Yorker Art Editor Franoise Mouly, he mostly talks about his family Halloween traditions, but he does briefly address the political subtext of the Nov. 5 cover:

Mouly: Your previous Halloween covers have featured a haunted version of the Capitol and some colorful characters in Congress. We’re sensing a theme.
