The top six media chiefs raked in a combined quarter-BILLION in compensation last year
Posted in: UncategorizedVariety’s just-released Money issue carries the coverline “MEDIA MOOLAH,” and then, in the story anchoring the package, asks: “Do Media Chiefs Deserve the Lavish Pay Packages They Rake in?”
The obvious answer to that question is: Sorry, it doesn’t matter what you think! As Variety’s Brent Lang and David Lieberman write,
There’s never been a richer time to wear the crown at the media conglomerates that churn out the world’s most popular television shows and movies. CBS’ Les Moonves, Discovery’s David Zaslav and Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes each took home salary and compensation packages in 2017 that dwarfed those of Silicon Valley pashas such as Apple’s Tim Cook ($12.8 million) or Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg ($8.9 million), despite the fact that Cook’s and Zuckerberg’s companies boast far greater market share and cultural cachet.

Two marketing execs part of latest Nike purge

Helen Kim, vice president of Nike East for North America, and Simon Pestridge, global vice president of marketing for performance categories, are no longer at the company, a Nike spokesman confirmed after inquiries from Bloomberg News. Steve Lesnard, the head of running in North America, and Tommy Kain, Nike’s director of sports marketing, have also left, a spokesman confirmed. The company declined to expand on why they’d departed.
They are the latest in a slew of executive exits since March, when Nike began reviewing complaints about managers’ behavior. The departed include several vice presidents and Trevor Edwards, who as Nike’s brand president was a favorite to succeed Mark Parker as chief executive officer.

Quartz' about-face on programmatic ads has big implications for digital publishing
Posted in: UncategorizedAtlantic Media-owned Quartz has long eschewed programmatic advertising, arguing display ads sold through automation negatively impact user experience. But the company said Tuesday that it is changing its mind, and among other steps has begun selling ads through Concert, a digital ad marketplace created by Vox Media and NBC Universal.
“We recognize that the market is evolving and we need to make sure we are making it easier on marketers to use our platform to reach quality audiences,” says Joy Robins, chief revenue officer at Quartz, adding that the decision to sell ads programmatically “was something we obviously approached really, really thoughtfully.”
“This is the first time we have entered into a partnership like that for marketers looking to reach an affluent level of readers in a brand safe way,” she added.

Watch Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel try to make sense of Rudy Giuliani's hapless media tour
Posted in: UncategorizedEven if you haven’t been paying terribly close attention, you’re probably aware that President Trump’s latest laywer, Rudy Giuliani, has been having a really hard time on the new job. How bad has it been? Just watch: Seth Meyers devoted his signature “A Closer Look” segment on NBC’s “Late Night” last night to Giuliani’s mess, lining up his various hapless TV appearances, plus his boss’s exceptionally condescending comments (“I’ll tell you what, Rudy’s a great guy, but he just started a day ago. But he really has heart into it, he’s working hard…”). As Meyers sums up Trump’s defense: “Give the kid a break! He’s only 73, going on Nosferatu!” (Cue juxtaposed shots of Giuliani and Nosferatu.) Meyers then adds, “He’s a former mayor and U.S. attorney who’s now the laywer for the president of the United States, and Trump talks about him like he’s a trainee at Chipotle.” (Cue a shot of Giuliani in a Chipotle smock.)
Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel, in a portion of his opening monologue (below) on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” actually hauled out his chalk board to attempt to make sense of a couple of Giuliani’s more bumbling statements to George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.” Essentially all Kimmel did was was go over two of Giuliani’s verbatim pronouncements clause by clause, causing his studio audience to repeatedly erupt in laughterthat’s how nonsensical Giuliani’s statements have been. In other words, this is (dark) comedy that writes itself.
AC/DC, Jason Derulo rock Coke's global World Cup campaign
Posted in: UncategorizedThe ad, by The Cyranos/McCann of Barcelona, is set to run globally next month, capping a nine-month World Cup campaign that began in September when Coke partnered with Electronic Arts on an integration in its “FIFA 18” video game.
Portions of the campaign are expected to hit at least 185 countries before the World Cup begins in Russia on June 14.
Coke recently began airing two other ads. One, called “Ready For” by Mercado/McCann of Buenos Aires, imagines Coke plant managers giving pep talks to bottles of Coke as they head out into the hands of emotional soccer fans.
