Apple plans to sell video subscriptions through its TV app

Apple’s plan to reinvent cable TV is starting to look a lot like the strategy of its rival Amazon.

For the first time, Apple plans to begin selling subscriptions to certain video services directly via its TV app, rather than asking users to subscribe to them through apps individually downloaded from the App Store, according to people familiar with the matter.

This would simplify the process and bolster Apple’s TV app on Apple TV, iPhones and iPads, making it a central place for people to find, watch, and buy content. It would also be another way for Apple to keep boosting its services business, which it expects to generate $50 billion a year in revenue by 2021.

Digital advertising had yet another record-breaking year in 2017, as ad revenue totaled $88 billion, a 21 percent upswing from 2016, the Interactive Advertising Bureau said Thursday in a report prepared by PwC.

Mobile captured the majority of those ad dollars, as expected, comprising 57 percent, or about $50 billion. That’s up from the $36.6 billion mobile ad dollars reported for 2016.

There were no surprises, but here are several takeaways from the IAB’s ninth report of a record-breaking year.

4 Steps Facebook Should Consider to Repair Its Post-Cambridge Analytica Reputation

Let’s face it, no one wants to be in Mark Zuckerberg’s Adidas slides lately. Tidal accused of inflating Beyoncé and Kanye West streaming stats

Jay-Z’s music streaming app Tidal has been accused of inflating the number of listens racked up by Beyonc and Kanye West, but the company is firing back at the Norwegian magazine that reported the charges.

In 2016, the music service Tidal had reported some eye-popping stream counts for Beyonc’s album “Lemonade” and West’s “The Life of Pablo.” In its first 15 days, “Lemonade” generated 300 million streams, and West’s album got 250 million streams in 10 days.

Those are numbers impressive even on Spotify, the No. 1 music app with 170 million monthly active users. (Tidal claims to have 3 million monthly subscribers.) Last year, Taylor Swift debuted her single “Look What You Made Me Do” on Spotify, and it was the best first-day opening on the appwith 8 million streams. Spotify was not available for comment.
