QA&A: Jared Leto reflects on 'America,' apps and creativity

Cowgirl, Doggy, Face, Sixty-Nine and The Crab. These five popular sex positions, according to AskMen, are the words that are listed on one of the multiple covers of the new album, “America,” from Jared Leto’s band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

They’re provocative words, and a provocative title, for the band’s first album in five years, especially during these times of political divisiveness and cultural upheaval. To promote the album, which dropped last week, Letowho got his start playing the teen heartthrob, Jordan Catalano, in “My So-Called Life”helped design the covers, which list various “American things,” says Leto, meant to serve as a time capsule of sorts.

There’s a list highlighting the most profitable prescription drugs by sale (Humira, Abilify, Sovaldi and Crestor) and another citing the most valuable trademarks (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Walmart and IBM). There’s also one calling out four of the hot topics in America (A.I., bitcoin, fake news and, of course, Russia).

Ex-speaker Boehner morphs from marijuana foe to weed adviser

The marijuana industry has a new spokesman: John Boehner.

The Republican former Speaker of the House has joined the advisory board of Acreage Holdings, a company that cultivates, processes and dispenses cannabis in 11 U.S. states. Boehner’s endorsement, after saying nine years ago he was “unalterably opposed” to legalization, could be considered a watershed event: Marijuana has gone mainstream.

“Over the last 10 or 15 years, the American people’s attitudes have changed dramatically,” he says. “I find myself in that same position.”

Index Exchange expands as ad tech consolidation looms

Index Exchange said Wednesday that it is hiring 200 staffers by the end of this year, bringing its total headcount to 520 and signaling growth even as the overpopulated ad-tech business continues to consolidate.

The company says its expansion is not only happening without outside investors, but possible in part because it doesn’t have outside investors at all.

Facebook loses ground as people spend more time with Google

Facebook lost ground to Google in January as users spent more time on YouTube and other Alphabet Inc. properties, according to a report.

Brian Wieser, a Pivotal Research analyst who reviewed Nielsen digital consumption data, says Google properties, including YouTube and Waze, combined to account for 27.4 percent of all time spent on digital mediaup 3 percentage points from the previous year. By contrast, Facebook’s share of time spent fell about 2 points to 16.3 percent over the same period.

Facebook depends on people coming back frequently so it can collect data and use it to target ads at them. The company said in the fourth quarter that people were spending less time on the site after Facebook began shifting users’ news feeds back toward posts from friends and family and away from businesses and media outlets. But if the trend continues, investors could take it as a sign that users are losing interest in Facebook.
