What WPP clients think about Martin Sorrell leaving

Besides being ubiquitous in news media as the face of WPP and to some extent the entire agency world, Martin Sorrell was equally ubiquitous at client global meetings as his holding company’s salesman-in-chief.

So will WPP’s hold on clients fade away along with Sorrell? At least officially, clients have greeted the news of his retirement with a resounding “meh.” Top clients including Procter & Gamble Co., Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, Ford Motor Co., Kimberly-Clark Corp. and Dannon either declined to comment, didn’t respond to requests for comment, or said very little. A J&J spokeswoman said only: “Just want to confirm there is no change in our agency partnership.”

But the reality is that Sorrell’s departure is bound to make a difference to clients. He was legendarily “hands on” with his agencies and clients alike, known for relentlessly asking top marketer executives about their business challenges and needs, then trying to deliver solutions. Those included everything from creating client-specific shopper and consumer promotion groups for Unilever and K-C to building multidisciplinary agency teams for Ford and Colgate-Palmolive Co.

The Berlin wall was a symbol of separation and hate. Nowadays the city is marked by a line on the floor representing where the wall used to pass. Given that there aren`t almost any outdoor sports spaces in the city, Adidas brings people together by creating sport fields around Berlin where the separation line between the teams will be the Berlin wall line.

Sao Paulo City Hall: Being Visible

São Paulo has a significant number of homeless people on the streets. Even so, many public shelters remain with empty beds every day. Sometimes for a noble reason: they don’t want to abandon their dogs, not accepted in those places before. Now, the new units accept and guarantee space for the pets, but their misinformation left the beds still empty, while hundreds of people continue to sleep on the sidewalks.

To change this reality and talk with this so specific target, who don’t have smartphone, social media profile or frequent access to the tradicional media, São Paulo City Hall decided to create a new communication channel, with a direct impact to the homeless people. Inviting 5 different street artists, they transform the roof of viaducts, place that only homeless people can see – and exactly at bedtime –, in a direct and effective media.

Each artist (Galo, Randal, Pixote, Thassio and René Muniz) has had complete freedom to impress their own style on their graffiti, once it made clear that the new public shelters were dog friendly and nearby. For that, the agency had studied the best dimensions, position of the drawing, feasibility and all security measures.

Like every street artwork, the 5 graffiti will be available indefinitely, depending on external factors independent of the public control. The main goal is that the biggest possible number of people in vulnerable situation and their dogs have the opportunity to sleep and dream with comfort, safety and dignity.

After Years of the Same Approach, Holding Company Leadership Will Need to Diversify

I’ve lost count of the number of journalists who have asked for my perspective since WPP announced its investigation into misconduct claims against Martin Sorrell almost two weeks ago. I don’t engage in speculative conversations with journalists, on or off the record, but in any event, I assumed Sir Martin would continue to lead WPP…

Apple Music for journalism? Apple plans paid subscription service for news

Apple plans to integrate recently acquired magazine app Texture into Apple News and debut its own premium subscription offering, according to people familiar with the matter. The move is part of a broader push by the iPhone maker to generate more revenue from online content and services.

The company agreed last month to buy Texture, which lets users subscribe to more than 200 magazines for $9.99 a month. Apple cut about 20 Texture staff soon after, according to one of the people.

The world’s largest technology company is integrating Texture technology and the remaining employees into its Apple News team, which is building the premium service. An upgraded Apple News app with the subscription offering is expected to launch within the next year, and a slice of the subscription revenue will go to magazine publishers that are part of the program, the people said. They asked not to be identified discussing private plans. Apple declined to comment.

Watch Colbert's blissed-out reaction to the Hannity scandal

On last night’s “Late Show,” Stephen Colbert graciously ceded Monday’s big reveal, for viewers who might have been a little behind the curve, regarding Fox News anchor Sean Hannity: “CNN, you’ve earned this,” Colbert said as he cut to a clip from the Fox News rival reporting that Hannity secretly shares a lawyer, Michael Cohen, with President Trump. When the brief video ended, Colbert was nowhere to be founduntil the camera panned over and found him leaning back in a leather chair, eyes closed and blissed out while sipping from a glass of red wine.

Coming to, he stood up and spoke into the camera, addressing his old “Daily Show” colleague and fellow Fox News antagonist: “Jon Stewart, after the show I’m going to come over and we’re just gonna spoon! Just spoon!”

He then spoke to his viewing audience: “This is craaaaazzzzzzzy! Cohen only has two other clients, and all he does for them is pay off mistresses! Which raises the obvious question: Who did Sean Hannity have sex with?”
