Remotely Entertaining SXSW: The NYT's 'Daily' Podcast a Different Kind of Front Page

The 167-year-old New York Times has a boringly simple strategy when it comes to generating revenue in the digital era: Report news worth reading and grow paid digital subscriptions. That game plan has paid off in spades, as revenue from subscriptions yielded more than $1 billion in 2017, a first for the publication. For the past year, however, the Times has also been reaping dividends from The Daily, a podcast that aims to make the news worth hearing.

And while publishers such as Vox Media are building sophisticated ad-tech platforms to generate revenue, The Times is offering The Daily for free, largely as a gateway to new audiences, with just one ad per episode to underwrite nearly a dozen staffers. It’s already generating a profit anyway.

“The Daily is the best billboard the New York Times has ever had,” Sam Dolnick, assistant managing editor at the Times, says in this episode of Remotely Entertaining from SXSW. “If you think you are not interested in the news, or The New York Times is boring, then listen to The Daily.”

Alko: Burden

BACKGROUND
As many as 70 000 children in Finland grow up in a family burdened by alcohol. For these children even moderate consumption may feel uncomfortable.

CHALLENGE
When Alcohol is a real problem at home, we have to make sure that at least children´s hobbies are always alcohol-free time.

IDEA
We wanted adults to realize that alcohol and children’s hobbies should never be combined, because children have the right to enjoy their hobbies without the burden of drinking adults. We should give children as much free time from alcohol as possible.

EXECUTION
We created a film that shows how a child can be continuously confronted with alcohol in everyday life.

Nanhi Kali: The Powerless Queens

In the game of chess, the queen is the most powerful piece. But today in Indian society the queens are the least powerful. Not only are they violated in the name of religion or gender but many times even their basic rights of education, health and safety are not with them.

To change this and throw light on how a society fails if the queen is powerless, WAT Consult in association with Nanhi Kali has created a chess game wherein one player’s queen cannot move at all, rendering it powerless while the other player’s queen would have all her powers.

Tania Sachdev, Chess Grandmaster was brought upon to deliver this message via the campaign video. She is seen challenging people to play the digital version of the chess game by taking the Powerless Queen Challenge on the website – www.powerlessqueen.com

Minha primeira escolha foi a palestra “How can sustainability coexist with consumerism?”
