It’s not always good to have other people’s attention. Especially when those people are car thieves. This campaign demonstrates that, thanks to Sherlock’s Antitheft Marking, the attention of thieves is diverted elsewhere. The thieves are personified by beams of light that automatically point to vehicles unmarked by Sherlock. They’re inspecting them and getting ready to steal them.

CBS Is Reviving Murphy Brown Next Season

Once NBC’s revival of Will & Grace became one of this season’s biggest hits–and ABC scheduled a Roseanne return for midseason–it was only a matter of time before a rival decided to bring back another ’90s hit. And now, CBS has announced it will be bringing back Murphy Brown next season, with Candice Bergen reprising…

'Murphy Brown' Is Back, and TV Moves Closer to Becoming a Greatest-Hits Rehash

CBS is bringing back “Murphy Brown” and its original star Candice Bergen, picking up 13 episodes for the next TV season. At this rate there won’t be any original shows on broadcast TV within a decade.

At least it seems that way. As overall TV consumption continues to fragment and it remains difficult to count viewers on nontraditional platforms, broadcasters are becoming increasingly desperate to find built-in audiences through revivals of former hits.

“Murphy Brown” joins a growing list of old series made new, including “Will & Grace” on NBC, “Roseanne” on ABC and “Dynasty” on The CW. CBS brought back “MacGyver”; Fox rebooted both “The X-Files” and “Prison Break.” And of course ABC is re-igniting “American Idol” just two years after its run on Fox ended.

Lowe’s Enters Final Stage of 3-Part Regional Creative Review

In December, home improvement giant Lowe’s confirmed that it would be the latest retailer to break with tradition in abandoning the traditional agency of record model.

That news came in the form of a creative review that launched after Lowe’s parted with its CMO and moved its media buying business from OMD to Starcom, thereby ending an exclusive 12-year relationship with Omnicom.

This review, however, is unique in several ways.

Lowe’s is hardly the first client eager to keep its options open on the agency front. But according to three parties with direct knowledge of the matter, the current review is organized by region, with three separate pitches involving agencies in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest portions of the United States. (Lowe’s is based in Mooresville, North Carolina.)

Each pitch involves three finalists competing to be Lowe’s creative agency for their respective regions. Our sources say the process is now in its last stages, with final presentations occurring last week.

Moving forward, Lowe’s will retain all three winners, maintaining the equivalent of an open-format business relationship with each. In other words, the different shops could simultaneously work on different and potentially complimentary projects. According to our sources, major projects will also follow a “jump ball” round in which the three agencies will pitch against one another.

All factors strongly indicate that spending concerns helped shape this approach, with earlier reports stating that Lowe’s looks to move away from major TV and print work in order to focus more heavily on digital campaigns.

But this not a standard consolidation effort in which a major client moves all work to a single holding group. When news of the review first broke, a BBDO representative confirmed that the agency would be defending its business. According to our sources, IPG’s Ep.+Co, sister agency to Hill Holliday, is also competing in the Southeastern pitch.

A BBDO representative deferred to the client for further comment, and an Ep+Co. spokesperson declined to comment. Lowe’s also declined to elaborate on the review, and the full list of agencies involved is unclear at this time.

All of our sources, however, agree that the winners should be announced in coming weeks.

How Twitter Works With Governments to Censor Accounts, According to BuzzFeed

In a new investigation headlined “An Inside Look at the Accounts Twitter Has Censored in Countries Around the World,” BuzzFeed says it has “has identified more than 1,700 Twitter accounts that have been blocked in at least one country” following requests from “national groups and governments.”

The report by Craig Silverman and Jeremy Singer-Vine, published this morning, notes that Twitter regularly issues a “transparency report in which it shares the number of requests received from different governments” but it doesn’t release a list of the “specific accounts it has muzzled.” So BuzzFeed built its own dataset, which it just released as a Google Sheets spreadsheetnoting that not all of the accounts are still “withheld,” to use Twitter’s term, while others have been removed entirely. The spreadsheet covers accounts “observed to have been withheld at some point in at least one of seven countriesGermany, France, Turkey, Russia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Indiabetween October 2017 and early January 2018.”

What you may not have realized until now is that it’s possible for a specific Twitter account to be blocked in a specific country but still remain accessible to users in other countries. Twitter’s ability to turn the visibility of individual accounts on and off on a country-by-country basis is one way that it attempts to comply with laws around the world. Silverman and Jeremy Singer-Vine write that their analysis offers “an unprecedented glimpse into Twitter’s collaboration with national groups and governmentsdemocratic and authoritarian alikeand provides a stark reminder of Twitter’s ability to shape political conversations, and of governments’ attempts to influence that process.”
