NYT Slams One of Its Lawyers for Secretly Trying to Block Its Weinstein Story

On Monday night, The New Yorker did something you may not have thought possible: It published another astonishing story about disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. (At this point you’d think we would have lost our ability to be shocked by anything Weinstein-relatedbut no.) The report by Ronan Farrow is headlined “Harvey Weinstein’s Army of Spies” and begins,

In the fall of 2016, Harvey Weinstein set out to suppress allegations that he had sexually harassed or assaulted numerous women. He began to hire private security agencies to collect information on the women and the journalists trying to expose the allegations. According to dozens of pages of documents, and seven people directly involved in the effort, the firms that Weinstein hired included Kroll, which is one of the world’s largest corporate-intelligence companies, and Black Cube, an enterprise run largely by former officers of Mossad and other Israeli intelligence agencies.

Farrow (who also authored The New Yorker’s previous Weinstein expos, published early last month) details the various disturbing tactics deployed by Weinstein’s would-be protectors. For example, “One of the investigators pretended to be a women’s-rights advocate and secretly recorded at least four meetings with McGowan”actress Rose McGowan, one of Weinstein’s accusers.

Oxfam: The Heist No One is Talking About

Film
Oxfam

Oxfam launches new film to demonstrate the devastating effects of tax dodging. Companies dodge approx. £78bn in tax in poor countries annually. Today Oxfam reveals that just a third of this is enough to cover the bill for essential healthcare that could prevent the needless deaths of eight million mothers, babies and children. Oxfam today reveals this information alongside a hard-hitting film illustrating the human cost of tax avoidance on the world’s poorest. The film was created by Don’t Panic and produced by Stink Films, MPC and Whitehouse to demonstrate that there is a global heist hitting the poorest the hardest, and it’s about time we get people talking about it.

Pinacoteca de São Paulo: Anthropophagy

Film
Pinacoteca de São Paulo

The São Paulo Pinacoteca, one of the most important museums in Brazil, launched a campaign to increase visitor frequency. Created by F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi, the idea behind the campaign is to demystify the act of appreciating art and thus draw the public closer to the museum.   In order to illustrate the concept “There is no right. There is no wrong. There is art,” the agency created a commercial centred around a Brazilian work of art: the painting “Anthropophagy” (1929), by Brazilian modernist painter, Tarsila do Amaral. Directed by João Papa and Manu Mazzaro, from Barry Company, the production reveals recurring questions asked by visitors of the museum, reinforcing the idea that there are no predefined formulas to understand art.   This script is a true dive into the strokes and colors of this Brazilian artist. And, without providing viewers with answers, it involves the audience inviting everyone to show up and experience Brazilian art at the Pinacoteca.   The painting “Anthropophagy,” normally exhibited at the José and Paulina Nemirovsky Gallery, at the Pinacoteca, is currently being displayed in the retrospective of the artist in Chicago and New York.

Cell C: #ConnectYourWay

Film
Cell C

“These kids are always on their phones. They’re so disconnected.” Really? Egg Films’ Slim directed #ConnectYourWay, 1886’s vibrant new Cell C ad that celebrates all the ways the youth are actually more connected than ever. Exposure’s Rory O’Grady shot the ad, which was art directed by Keenan McAdam and edited by Joe de Ornelas at Left, with Wondermerk adding all the quirky filters and effects you’d expect from a cellphone ad. Nola Williams had fun with the wardrobe, which was sponsored by adidas. #ConnectYourWay was conceptualised by 1886, with Stuart Stobbs as executive creative director and Caroline Crowther producing for the agency.
