Equifax Says Cyberattack May Have Hit 143 Million Customers

Equifax said its systems were struck by a cyberattack that may have affected about 143 million U.S. customers of the credit reporting agency, shedding light on one of the largest and most intrusive breaches in history.

Intruders accessed names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver’s license numbers, Equifax said in a statement. Credit card numbers for about 209,000 consumers were also accessed, the company said.

“This is clearly a disappointing event for our company, and one that strikes at the heart of who we are and what we do. I apologize to consumers and our business customers for the concern and frustration this causes,” CEO Richard Smith said in a statement.

Watch Keith Olbermann Risk an Aneurysm as He Furiously Rails Against Trump Over DACA

“Trump’s DACA Decision is a Grim Turning Point.” That’s the rather staid title of the latest episode of GQ’s “The Resistance with Keith Olbermann.” The one-line description of the video on GQ’s YouTube channel”The opportunists in the GOP who enable these racist moves will face a reckoning”offers slightly more context, but really, there’s nothing that can prepare you for the full force of Olbermann’s fury in this latest rant. A sample: “You conservative black pastors and you right-wing Hispanic leaders who still support Trump and these RACISTS today, you will find yourselves the victims of Trump and these racists tomorrow. The mothers kept from the funerals will be yours. The lawns on which the torches will burn will be yours.” Olbermann, of course, rose to fame in part because of his passionate “Special Comment” segments on his old MSNBC “Countdown” show, but making waves with an anti-Trump web show circa 2017 is a different sort of challenge. In this episode of “The Resistance,” let’s just say that Keith Olbermann meets the challenge and then some.

See the First-Ever NFL Regular Season Liquor Ad

Diageo isn’t wasting time taking advantage of the NFL’s new rules allowing liquor ads. The spirits giant will run a 30-second spot for Crown Royal whiskey as the first ad during the first commercial break of tonight’s season opener on NBC between the Chiefs and Patriots.

While other booze brands bought time during the pre-season, tonight’s ad marks a momentous moment for the liquor industry as the first ad to ever run during a regular season game. The NFL lifted its ban on liquor ads earlier this year, paving the way for booze brands to seize on the high viewership of America’s favorite pro sport. Still, marketers have to navigate a thicket of regulations that don’t apply to beer brands, which have long run ads during games.

The number of 30-second liquor ads allowed per game is capped at four, with a limit of two ads in any quarter or within halftime, according to the rules. Spirits ads are also prohibited from having a football theme, and must carrying a “prominent social responsibility message,” according to regulations spelled out by the league in early June.

Farewell, Graydon Carter! (Now When Does Janice Min Start?)

So today we find ourselves suddenly talking about a media icon as if he’s deadthough he’s still very much alive. As The New York Times’ Michael M. Graynbaum writes in an obit item titled “Graydon Carter to End 25-Year Run as Vanity Fair’s Editor,”

Mr. Carter’s influence and stature in the magazine and entertainment world is so great that to call his exit a changing of the guard seems insufficient: This is more of a regal passage. One of the few remaining celebrity editors, Mr. Carterfamous for his double-breasted suits, white flowing hair and a seven-figure salaryis a party host, literary patron, film producer and restaurateur who presides over a monthly publication that can still break news in a round-the-clock media age.

It’s another testament to Carter’s influence and stature that he got to carefully stage-manage his exit, as is also clear from the Times piece:
