Tuesday Morning Stir

-We don’t know what this M&C Saatchi work for the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority is advertising, exactly. But Arnold doesn’t seem like his old self.

-P&G is not messing around this time, you guys.

-NFL stars Richard Sherman and Clay Matthews keep it deadpan in a new “Put a Smile on Your Snackface” Wonderful Pistachios campaign about chronic losers from in-house Wonderful Agency.

-Does anyone actually like procurement? Serious question.

-The New York Daily News was sold to Tronc for one dollar. RIP, print advertising.

-Digital is doing just fine, though. One Tom(my) Goodwin just scored himself a gig at The Drum, and here’s his first column about how it’s all the rage now.

-The Drum asks W+K CCO Susan Hoffman ten questions.

-Can you imagine a creative agency getting abandoned by investors and major trade groups for working on a campaign designed “to stir up racial tensions?” That’s what just happened to global PR firm Bell Pottinger.

-Agency Mr. Glasses and Showtime Marketing are creeping out Aussies with an OOH campaign promoting the September 7 release of IT.

Burger King Is Now Selling a Mystery Burger for Those Who Like to Take Their Chances

Congratulations, it’s a burger! From now through Sept. 25, folks forking over 2 euros (about $2.40) at Burger King restaurants in France can get one of 10 signature sandwiches, selected at random and served in an unbranded white box. For ad shop Buzzman, the promotion brought obstetrics to mind. So, it made a spot with…

Von Miller Stays Goofily Unpredictable in W+K’s New Ads for Old Spice

Von Miller is so delicate, he uses Old Spice’s gentle-on-the-skin “Invisible Spray” to fight his body odor, instead of running a power sander over his armpits. So goes the absurd premise of a new ad starring the Denver Broncos powerhouse linebacker, who, in real life, is known for forcefully tackling his opponents. Part of a…

Cooking Up Great Content? Hire a Soup Taster

As more and more marketers recognize the power of content to drive brand, engagement, lead generation and advocacy, there’s no shortage of content competing for your eight seconds of average mobile attention span. And we all know that what’s funny or interesting or inspiring to one person isn’t to millions of others swiping through the same feed. As marketers creating thousands of hours of video, newsletters, blogs, white papers and podcasts, how can we make sure our content is good before it’s posted?

One client marketer of a major Fortune 100 company asked, “Why does the content my external agency creates outperform the content my in-house team creates by about four to one?” I answered his question with another question, “Well, who’s your Soup Taster?”

Perhaps you recall the scene in the endearing Pixar/Disney film “Ratatouille,” where the rat Remy secretly makes the soup, which the chef then tastes to determine if it can be brought out and served to the customer in the dining room. When the chef’s taste buds tell him it’s good, then, and only then, can it be served to the customer.

U.K. PR Association Ejects Bell Pottinger After Scandal in South Africa

Bell Pottinger, the London-based public relations firm started by an adviser to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has been thrown out of the U.K. industry body in an unprecedented ruling after an investigation found its work on behalf of the Gupta family in South Africa had stoked racial tensions.

Bell Pottinger ran a potentially divisive social-media campaign aimed at highlighting economic inequality in South Africa along racial grounds and targeted wealthy white individuals and companies, according to a probe by law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. The company’s actions “brought the industry into disrepute,” the Public Relations and Communications Association said on Tuesday. “It has received the harshest possible sanctions. The PRCA has never before passed down such a damning indictment of an agency’s behavior.”

The firm was found to have broken four clauses of the body’s code of conduct and professional charter while working for the Guptas, who are friends with President Jacob Zuma and in business with his son. The rules state that members shouldn’t cause racial offense with their work and “deal fairly and honestly” with the public at all times.
